New Iowa State Fair Record, Class in Session, Beat the Heat

The largest Fair since before the pandemic. More than 1.1 million people have attended this year’s Iowa State Fair. Making 2023 the second largest fair in its 169 years. The Des Moines Register says 1,133,938 enjoyed the state’s largest event. That’s over 15,000 fairgoers from 2022. 2019 still holds the record of most fairgoers at 1,170,375. Some businesses are helping teachers out: - Peace Tree in East Village is offering BOGO draft beers to any school staff member this week through Sunday. - Slow Down Coffee in Highland Park is giving teachers 10% off a drink of their choice this week. The Hub Spot in downtown Des Moines is ready to party. The restaurant with a river view is renovated and people can make reservations for their event. Demolition for New Skyscraper, Ankeny Farmers Market, Summer Fun

Des Moines News: Walnut Street will be closed between 5th Street and 6th Avenue for a while in downtown Des Moines. Demolition has begun on the 38-year-old Kaleidoscope building. KCCI News says crews are tearing down the east half of the shuttered mall to make way for a $100 million housing skyscraper. The project will take several years and final plans to fund the project will come before the city council later this summer. Des Moines News: Air Quality Advisory For The State Of Iowa Through Wednesday. The National Weather Service says The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Iowa. The worst air quality is expected in about the eastern third of the state, where fine particulates will be at concentrations the EPA considers unhealthy. Learn More. Kids south of downtown Des Moines have a new play area at MacRae Park. The city has renovated many parts of the park at the corner of Thomas Beck Road and SW 9th Street. Kids can enjoy a new water play area and the new Larry E. Moore Nature Playscape. Watch my video tour on instagram. There is a ribbon cutting ceremony for completion of phase 3 of the park at noon today. DSM is reminding people not to light up on Independence Day. Des Moines News: The DSM Arts Festival is all weekend. Three days of celebrating the arts in downtown Des Moines. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Heritage Carousel at Union Park in DSM, a key attraction for adults and children alike! The nonprofit behind the carousel marks the anniversary with free rides and a party 4-8pm and will include 25 hours of totally free rides with the carousel open from 11am to 7pm. Des Moines News: Cajun Fest is this weekend at Cowles Commons in Downtown Des Moines. Brook Run Park on the northeast side of DSM has a brand new playground for the kids. The city says it includes a We-Go-Round, Chill Spinner, Bucket Seat, and 3 new ground panels with puzzles. There is also new safety surfacing and ADA compliant sidewalk connection to Village Run Drive! See pictures. Backstage Volunteers are needed at the DSM PlayHouse. The Animal Rescue League is having a virtual Auction June 17th. The proceeds will benefit pets at the ARL. The DMPL Summer Checkout Challenge has begun. Des Moines News: The Summer Biergarten in Des Moines has returned for year two. Starting today every Wednesday to Sunday May-October, you can head east of the Lauridsen Amphitheater in Water Works Park. This year you can enjoy food, beverages, live music, and games. The new Olive Garden in south DSM on SE 14th Street is having a soft opening this weekend. It opens to the public Monday May 22nd. The Neal Smith Trail is closed from 6th Ave. to Birdland Marina. DSM Parks and Rec says the closure is due to elevated river levels. The trail will reopen when water levels decrease. Gray’s Lake Park & Meredith Tail will be closed for some renovations. The City says the closure is from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm on Tuesday, May 23rd as 𝗙𝗢𝗚 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗟 is applied to the trail surfaces. Learn More. DSM Parks and Rec needs trail volunteers. DART has a new route in Des Moines starting this June. The city says If you live in north DSM, the bus transit service is introducing weekday service on DART On Demand River Bend. It is a mini service that allows riders to take on-demand trips around the River Bend, Oakridge, King Irving, Mondamin Presidential and Chautauqua Park neighborhoods.
