Ep. 202 Connection, Care & Community: Robert Morris University's "Chef Dan" Chiaverini. And notes from our Kindness Crate!

4/6/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?". “I’d love to offer up a conversation with Dan Chiaverini, known to Robert Morris University students simply as “Chef Dan.” Dan has become something of a campus legend: a Harley-riding, Italian-raised chef who spends as much time talking with students in the dining hall as he does in the kitchen. Under his leadership, RMU Dining has become one of the most student-centered dining programs in Pennsylvania — recognized by Niche for its quality and community focus. Chef Dan leads a local food sourcing efforts program, works with doctors to create personalized meal plans for students with dietary needs and even teaches pasta-making and campfire cooking classes. At his core, Chef Dan embodies what Yinz Are Good celebrates — people who make Pittsburgh better through connection, care and community. His story blends food, mentorship and hometown pride, and his impact reaches far beyond the dining hall.” We received this email several weeks ago and it made our day. We talk a lot on this show about recognizing how we can each use our unique skillset to support others and build community, and Chef Dan is a prime example of that. He goes above and beyond for the students - these young adults who are away from home for the first time - and it means so much not only to them, but to their families too. Tressa sat down with Chef Dan in one of RMU’s Academic Media Center recording studios and chatted about his journey, his Italian family, and, of course, about all he’s doing at Robert Morris. And also in this episode, Tressa shares notes from our Kindness Crate, in response to the question, “What are you grateful for today?”. Ep. 201 YinzMart.com - the online Pittsburgh Marketplace, featuring Healthy HeartBeets, Rosebloom Headwear, True Comfort Care and Wild Rosemary

3/27/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are building community. Community, support, collaboration, and a whole lot of laughter... A couple of months ago, we received an IG message that read, in part: “Hello, My name is Jurgen. I created an online marketplace for verified Pittsburgh small businesses called YinzMart.com.” Jurgen went on to say that YinzMart is meant to help yinzer- owned businesses. Well, you can imagine our joy when we read “yinz” and “yinzer” in the same paragraph… Needless to say, Jurgen and Tressa set up a call to chat. As Tressa sees it, the mission of YinzMart is to lift up local small businesses, help them in new and innovative ways, connect them with each other, and build community. And she was inspired to not only feature Jurgen & YinzMart on the show, but to welcome some of the small business owners who are part of YinzMart. What followed was a joyful meeting at the very cool and very modern Digital Foundry on Penn State’s New Kensington campus. (A huge thank you to the folks at the Digital Foundry - specifically, Alyssa Pistininzi - for their hospitality.) In short, the group of folks we assembled are incredible humans who care deeply about their communities and their fellow small business owners: Jurgen Koster, Kelly Cravotta, Julian Figarette, HongChing, Cassandra Ross, and Emily “the bun” Benka. You’ll hear about their journeys as small business owners, about how they support each other and how others support them, and how YinzMart is supporting them all. EPISODE 200 🎉 Flipping the script: Host Tressa Glover is our featured guest in celebration of this milestone episode

3/18/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. Welcome to Episode 200, yinzers! Woohoo! 🎉 In celebration of this milestone, we have flipped the script - or rather, flipped the mic - and put Tressa in the interviewee seat. We even have a very special (and very familiar) guest host... The idea for this episode was formed when Executive Director of Computer Reach, David Sevick, reached out to Tressa, asking if he could interview her for their weekly "good news" newsletter. In particular, he wanted to highlight Tressa during Women's History Month -which coincided with our Episode #200. In this episode, you'll hear Dave's interview with Tressa and then an extended interview with Tressa done by our guest host. Ep. 199 De'netta Benjamin-Miller & Sojourner House: Compassionate Recovery Services for Mothers and Their Families

3/10/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who unite us and who remind us that we are all a lot more alike than we are different. One of our goals has always been to provide a space to hear each other’s stories - and, more specifically, the parts of our stories that we don’t usually get around to sharing. The “why” behind who we are and what we do. The struggles, the light bulb moments, the heartache, the accomplishments, the joy…Because this is what connects us - this is how we see ourselves in one another. And when we see ourselves in others, the world begins to change. Today’s conversation encompasses all of this. De’Netta Benjamin-Miller is a licensed clinical social worker, she provides free mental health services to the community through her own company, Focus on Life Counseling Center, and she is Executive Director of Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS. In a nutshell, Sojourner House provides compassionate recovery services for mothers and their families. And the “and their families” is what truly sets them apart, as you’ll hear. As you may imagine, this conversation discusses trauma, and De'netta candidly shares her own traumatic experience and how it led her to the powerful work she's doing today. 3/2/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. We sure are glad you’ve joined us today, that you’ve carved out some time to hear about what’s going right in our communities, about the love and compassion existing within them. And today’s guest is the embodiment of these ideals. She has (literally) dedicated her life to helping others, to showing love to others, to providing hope to others…and she has been doing so for decades. Her name is Sue Fazzini or Sister Sue. What it can do for individuals and what it can do for communities. Ep. 196 Author KD Schnee and his children's book, The Rabbit in the Moon

2/13/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. Tressa recently received an email from author KD Schnee that read, in part: Hi, I wanted to share a local Pittsburgh family story... My mother, Barbara Bedner of Springdale, invented a timid rabbit named Yabbit the Rabbit decades ago to help me face fear and hesitation as a child. She always hoped it would become a children’s book, but never felt confident enough to write it. When she passed from Alzheimer’s in 2024, I decided to finish the story for her, even though by the time I began writing, she could no longer remember the character she created. That promise became my debut picture book, The Rabbit in the Moon. If this story might resonate with your audience, I’d love to share more... Well, dear yinzers, we're sure you know what happened next: Tressa happily invited KD to be a guest - and that's the conversation you'll be hearing today. KD Schnee's The Rabbit in the Moon picture book helps children face fears and feel brave, one small hop at a time. It helps kids build courage, confidence, and emotional growth. In this heartfelt conversation, you're going to hear a warm, candid, and emotional journey of a son navigating his way to honor and pay tribute to his mom and the lessons she taught him. How she inspired him to always try - to take tiny, brave hops. And now, he is paying those lessons forward to children all over the world. Ep. 195 Luke Mickelson, Founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, discusses the importance of listening to your inner voice and the true joy that comes from focusing on doing good for others

2/3/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. Our guest today reached out to us from the other side of the country - from Idaho, to be exact - and boy, are we glad he did. Let’s start with this: our guest's work has been recognized on Mike Rowe’s Returning the Favor, CNN Heroes (where he was a Top 10 finalist!), NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, Good Morning America, The Today Show, People Magazine, and even American Ninja Warrior. His name is Luke Mickelson and his work is the nonprofit, Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP). What began as a single act of kindness has grown into a global nonprofit with a simple but powerful mission: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”. Today, SHP has more than 400 chapters across 47 U.S. states and 4 countries. They build beds for kids who need them and wait until you hear how many beds they have made to date…it is astounding. Tressa had the great joy and honor of chatting with Luke via Zoom (she couldn’t quite make it over to Idaho). This is a conversation about taking care of one another, of how listening to your inner voice - your gut - can propel you to new and unexpected chapters of your life, of how saying “yes” to opportunities can literally change the lives of strangers. Ep. 194 Harmony Dog Rescue & The Street Dog Coalition: Helping dogs whose owners are experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, domestic violence or medical emergencies

1/26/2026
Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. A quick note from Tressa: This episode is dropping on January 26, 2026 amidst tumultuous times for many of us – and not just here in the United States. I know our listeners from around the world are going through difficult times as well. So I just wanted to take a minute…It’s uplifting that you’re listening in today - that you’re tuning in to hear the GOOD that people are doing for one another. Because they sure are, even though it’s not what’s plastered on the news, on our TV screens, and on our social media feeds. These stories are just as real. Empathy, generosity, kindness, and love are just as real. Though that’s a challenge in itself, isn’t it? Navigating life knowing that these opposites exist side-by-side? But…the folks featured on this show, episode in and episode out, are our guides to the constant good, and can serve as our inspiration to recognize our own unique gifts that can be used to build community and to help those in need. It is my honor to be the bearer of all of this GOODness. Thank you for being here. Tressa has the joy of welcoming Tim Lydon back to the show - yinz will remember him from Episode 122. Tim is the Co-founder of Harmony Dog Rescue and the recently-named Team Lead for The Street Dog Coalition Pittsburgh. Harmony Dog Rescue provides safe homes for dogs whose owners are experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, domestic violence or medical emergencies. And what makes them even more amazing is that their mission includes “loving both ends of the leash” - they aim to address the needs of the human, as well as the canine. 11/2/2025
Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make the world a better place?” We recently received an email saying, in part, “I’m reaching out to introduce you to two Pittsburghers who I think are a perfect fit for Yinz Are Good: Carla Arnold, who is 67 years old, and Tricia Patsilevas, who is 38 years old. Carla and Tricia are North Side neighbors who first met while volunteering in their community garden and have since built a friendship full of laughter, generosity, and adventure…They’re one of the Pittsburgh-based pairs featured in Picture This, a new Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh campaign, celebrating the power of aging in community.” Well, yinzers, this is right up our alley... So Tressa made her way to the North Side to chat with Carla and Tricia to learn more about their intergenerational friendship and how they’re building community. Then Tressa headed to Squirrel Hill for a delightful chat with Laura Poskin, the Executive Director of Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh.
