Closing the Education Gap in the Decoration Industry

4/11/2025
This week on the 2 Regular Guys Podcast, Terry, Aaron, and Erich return to continue the conversation on one of the most critical topics in our industry - education. As we dive deeper into where the gaps are forming, we’ll explore the risks of pulling back on training, the rise of self-service content, and the challenge of navigating misinformation. We’ll also break down what’s working, what decorators are actually responding to, and whether paid education is replacing the bundled training that used to be standard. Finally, we’ll share our predictions and hopes for the future of industry education, along with a call to action for both vendors and decorators to build something better. If you care about learning, growing, and helping our industry thrive, this episode is for you. Tired of bouncing between SanMar, S&S, and alphabroder just to compare prices? What’s falling flat (outdated manuals, generic videos, poorly produced content) Are decorators willing to pay for training when it’s no longer included with equipment? The rise of community-based learning (e.g., masterminds, peer groups, coaching programs) Mentorship and how that’s playing a growing role in skills transfer What’s Next for Education in Our Industry? Education vs. Content: What’s Really Helping Decorators Succeed?

4/4/2025
This week on the 2 Regular Guys Podcast, Terry, Aaron, and producer Erich Campbell dive into understanding if decorators are truly being educated or just consuming content. We believe that after 13 years of carrying the flag for education, the industry as a whole is agreeing with us. With vendors ramping up their online videos, social posts, and expert partnerships, it feels like the tide is turning. But is this content really moving the needle for decorators? Or is the shift away from hands-on, in-depth training leaving some folks behind? We’ll explore how vendor education has evolved since our show began, where it’s headed, and why some companies are pulling back just as others are stepping up. Whether you’re a decorator trying to level up or a vendor wondering how to better serve your customers, this episode is packed with honest takes and practical insights. The Evolution of Vendor Education How vendor-driven education has changed over the past decade From manuals and in-person training → to webinars, YouTube, Reels, etc. Examples of companies stepping up: Partnerships with educators, influencer training, vendor events Is it education or marketing disguised as education? 3. Hands-On Training vs. Self-Service Content Discussion: What are decorators actually retaining and applying? The power of in-person training (real-time feedback, hands-on practice, deeper learning) The pros and cons of self-serve content (videos, PDFs, online communities) When is one better than the other? 3/7/2025
We’re continuing our review of Niche Markets from our look back at episode 200 with a jump forward. This week, Terry and stand in Erich Campbell will share some new niche markets making the scene, share their insights on the practice of focussed marketing, and likely tell some stories about sales. Join us as we revisit, rethink, and refresh some of our past ideas while discussing how today’s technology and trends impact niche market opportunities. Plus, we’d love to hear from YOU—what niche markets are thriving in 2025? Yeah, because now it’s cap-sized (BAMMMMM!!) Niche Markets Looking Ahead Terry: Here are some new niche markets that have emerged or expanded significantly since 2017, driven by industry trends, technology advancements, and post-COVID shifts. Thanks Aaron for starting this list for us. Terry: Subscription Box Apparel The subscription box industry has exploded, with niche-focused boxes for everything from pet lovers to eco-conscious consumers. Offering exclusive, limited-edition apparel as part of a subscription model can create ongoing revenue. DTG & DTF printing makes it easy to produce small, unique runs with full-color designs. Larger runs once you’re established may lend itself to screen printing or more commercial DTF. I know of one company with a subscription list of 13,500 shirts a month. Is the market saturated? I don’t know? How great are your graphics and ideas?? Erich: Creator & Influencer Merch Social media influencers and content creators need their own branded merchandise, but many don’t want to manage bulk inventory. Print-on-demand services powered by DTG and DTF allow creators to launch merch lines with no upfront costs, capitalizing on trends instantly. (We’ve also seen the rise of creators leaning on traditional apparel decorators because of their desire to control garment and print/embellishment quality - amb3r creative - Mention phil defranco?) Terry: Remote Work & Digital Nomad Apparel With more people working remotely, there’s demand for comfortable, branded apparel that reflects the remote lifestyle—fun slogans, community-based branding, and hybrid work culture themes. Think “Zoom Call Champion” hoodies and “WFH Crew” tees. Van Life, RV Life ← perfect customer who doesn’t have the ability to do their own fulfillment Erich: E-sports & Gaming Communities Competitive gaming and streaming platforms (like Twitch and YouTube Gaming) have exploded, creating massive communities around games and streamers. Custom esports team jerseys, streamer merch, and event-based apparel are in high demand. DTF allows for detailed, vibrant designs perfect for gaming aesthetics.

Revisiting Niche Markets: What’s Changed Since Episode 200?

2/28/2025
We’re diving into the archives for Episode #586! This week, Terry and Aaron take a trip back to April 7, 2017, Episode #200, where they shared 200 Niche Markets for garment decorators. A lot has changed since then—COVID reshaped businesses, new trends emerged, and DTF printing disrupted the industry—so how do those niche markets hold up today? Which ones are still goldmines, and which have faded away? Join us as we revisit, rethink, and refresh some of our past ideas while discussing how today’s technology and trends impact niche market opportunities. Plus, we’d love to hear from YOU—what niche markets are thriving in 2025? Niche Markets Aaron: Terry we got in the way back machine and went back to 2017. https://www.2regularguys.com/200-niche-markets/ This was a little bit of a play on a seminar you were teaching at the time called 52 niche markets in 52 minutes, and we had some fun with the fact, we all know you didn’t get to 52. Since it was our 200th episode back then we wanted to celebrate. We were talking about the show for today, and we have not done a Niche show for a while. Terry: Yes, so we thought it would be good to look back at some of those niche ideas and discuss any updates, changes or new perspectives on them based on what has happened in 7 to 8 years. 2 things happened since this list was compiled - Covid and DTF transfers. 1. Marijuana Dispensaries Legal cannabis markets have expanded significantly since 2017, making branded apparel a huge opportunity. Dispensaries now focus more on lifestyle branding, and DTF has made it easier to produce vibrant, small-batch designs. 2. Event Staff With live events making a strong comeback post-COVID, there’s a resurgence in demand for event staff shirts. DTF allows for quick, on-demand customization. 3. Promotional Products Distributors With businesses prioritizing brand awareness more than ever, high-quality, low-minimum promotional apparel has become essential. DTF makes it easier to fulfill small orders without screen setup costs. 4. Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties Social media and custom experiences have driven demand for unique, high-quality event wear. DTF allows for intricate, full-color designs, making this a hot niche. 5. Fishing Charters Outdoor recreation saw a huge boost during the pandemic. Charter companies increasingly look for apparel that enhances the customer experience, and DTF makes printing on demand for customers easy. 6. Corporate Awards & Recognition Wear Employee engagement has evolved, with many companies using branded gear for retention and team-building, especially for remote workers. Short-run customization is easier than ever with DTF. 7. Boutique & Resort Wear

Ramona- thank you for joining us! For those few in the audience who don’t know you already, what don’t you let us know a little about how you came to be in the business of embroidery? Terry: Like Erich and I, you were recently at the Impressions Expo show this January- Did you see anything in the way of equipment or supplies that really caught your eye? What was new and interesting about the offerings there? Erich: I found that there was a higher emphasis on assistive tech and automation. How do you feel it fits into production as far as the kind of customers you serve as a digitizer? If you don’t mind me asking, who is your sort of ‘ideal’ digitizing client? Terry: Erich may have mentioned that you attended a couple classes at the trade shows - How was your experience with embroidery education at Expo? What do you think the attendees in general felt about what’s on offer? Erich: As a digitizer-for-hire, do you find more people wanting to get involved with digitizing and/or design work for embroidery, or are decorators you’ve worked with recently largely looking to just get the files and get stitching? Terry: As a solopreneur, you have to wear all of the hats in your business; do you find that there are a lot of folks doing the same among your clients, or are you dealing with departments/teams in larger companies? What’s been the trend with the folks you serve? Erich: Let me quickly plug your weekly show; Coffee and Conversation, streamed every Saturday- As someone who consistently creates educational content, what are people currently asking you to cover. Let me ask you a bit of tongue in cheek follow up - is what they ask for what you think they actually need? Terry: How do you think the embroidery and the overall decoration community has changed in the time you’ve been a part of it and moreover since you’ve had your show? Erich: I’m going to put you on the spot for one last 2-part question; What’s the most critical problem you think we are facing for the future of embroidery? Second, what one recommendation do you have for embroiderers out there who are looking for that next step? Terry: Where can folks find out more about you and your services? The Secret Sauce

I know you’ve been involved in screen print transfers, but talk to us about Direct-to-Film production. How did that come about and how’s it going? Terry: With every trade show there are more DTF machines, and around every corner more DTF film decorators vying for our business. What separates one DTF transfer provider from the next? Aaron: There are two parts to this equation. There’s the transfer, and there’s the heat press. Terry and I are going to take a break from standing on the BUY A GREAT HEAT PRESS soap box and let you take a stab at it. Terry: OK, we’ve got a great heat press and a great transfer. How do we make this job more efficient? Aaron: DTF transfers are known for their versatility, but are there still limitations when it comes to substrates or applications? What advancements are being made to address those challenges? Terry - Dan - Do you have plans for more automated carousel-type heat presses? Terry: Do you advise customers to start by outsourcing your transfers, or taking the plunge into a DTF printing system? When’s the best time to make the switch? Aaron: We’ve covered a lot, but let’s look ahead. What does the future hold for DTF technology, and where do you see it evolving in the next few years? But for anyone who missed that or just as a recap, can you both tell us a little about you and your organization? Tim, I’d like to start with you… Dave, how about you? Tim, being an apparel podcast, some of our Regulators might not be as familiar with ASI as they will be after this. But I’d like to start off talking a bit about the promotional products industry. In a blog you wrote recently you noted that the “industry achieved a new sales record in 2024”. What is your outlook for 2025 for the promo products industry, and why? Dave, lets talk Printing in 2025 for a moment. Your research team at Napco highlighted some details at last year's Vegas event about the print industry in their State of the Industry report. A stat that stood out to me was “68.8% of respondents have diversified beyond their primary printing segment.” So far in 2025 what are you all seeing as highlights or innovations we can expect in 2025. Tim, speaking of innovations I read that ASI recently launched the ESP+ Stores e-commerce solution.Tell us about that and how apparel decorators might be interested in learning more. https://programs.asicentral.com/stores?&utm_campaign=stores_press_release Dave, as you all see your members diversify, this partnership here seems to have led to some diversification for you all as well. In 2025, to spend less time on the web 10 Things We Would Like to See in 2025 What We Were Looking for in 2024 Terry: Among manufacturers and distributors I would love to see more ongoing training and support. I think we banged on this drum many times in the past, but if possible I think it got worse in 2023. What I’m talking about is the fact we are not selling and buying just equipment, we’re selling and we’re buying technology that requires proper training and ongoing support. Why do I think it got worse in 2023? Just the sheer number of new resellers in the DTF marketplace. And too many of their customers are left high and dry by their dealers. Do better in 2024 manufacturers and dealers! Unfortunately, it’s gone in the opposite direction with some companies. (613 Originals) Aaron: Support for grassroots programs. First I just want to shout out the support I have been getting for SkillsUSA. Epson, Conde, Craft Express, Stahls, Sewingmachine.com, Artesprix for providing the prizes. David, Nick, Stephanie, Sandy, Ann, Richard, Kristin, and Mark for their help and being the judges. Also shout out to Mimiki for their support and Insta Heat Presses for their help already in 2024. Those kids are blessed to have that support, but I think we need to be greedy. These kids are our future customers, employees and maybe even bosses. Do we want uneducated and unsupported kids, or do we want to nurture them? The local schools need more support, the state competitions need more support. Open your shop to a school. Looking at the major sublimation distributors. Outside of Conde, there are notable names missing from the list. It's not about competition, it's about building our future. And it's not just SkillsUSA. There are other programs or just locally in your community. - Big shoutout to Stahls for their programs and support Terry: Maybe garment decorating is really high school and cliques happen naturally no matter what we do. And of course, we are drawn to like-minded people. Everyone wants to belong to something bigger and be accepted. But when the industry cliques are tasked with ed...

Diversify your technology Diversify your customer base Aaron: Sustainability Initiatives: In 2024 the customer’s priorities are changing. Sustainability is no longer a buzz marketing term, but a requirement to a lot of our markets. The buyer has increased awareness and demand for eco-friendly and ethically produced apparel. Understanding what that truly means to your customers is crucial. Sourcing sustainable materials Reducing waste Adopting eco-conscious production methods. Election year, lots of unrest in the world. Decorators must make decisions based on their unique business foundation. Decorators need to be very clear about what their reason and values are, who exactly their ideal customers are, and what specific internal challenge they can solve for their ideal customers. So take some time to look at how you interact with your ideal client. Do your services really meet their complete needs? What processes or “ways we have always done it” need to be changed? What policies need to be rewritten to make sure they focus on what is in it for the customer? Terry: Take a look back at your 2023 expenses. Compare them with 2022, and beyond, maybe your last healthy year before covid.
