Our Wives Dish on Lifestyle Creep! #857

7/24/2024
Join us for a very laid back conversation with our better halves: Kate and Emily sit down behind the mics with us while we enjoyed a summer vacation at the beach last week. Rather than field listener questions, we had a delightful and inquisitive discussion that centered around increased spending. How we’ve managed rising prices whether that’s simply due to inflation or if lifestyle creep is a factor, accounting for additional sources of income, whether our frugality keeps us from more expensive pursuits, hitting pause on investing, the fear of running out of money (or having too much?), raising money savvy kids, aging parents, and plenty more! Accidents and Insurance and Deductibles, Oh My! (Bestie) #856

7/22/2024
Who remembers fire and tornado drills back when they were in school?! Even though in the moment they seemed like a complete waste of time, looking back as adults it’s easy to see how important it is to run a drill of what you would do in the event of a fire. And if you were in the scary scenario where you DID have a fire at your school, you were probably glad to have gone through the motions and rehearsed exactly what you should do. Insurance is kind of like a fire drill- most of the time it feels completely unnecessary, but in the rare instances where you actually need to put it to use, you’re more than happy to know you have that policy in place. And while virtually everyone is required to have car insurance, fewer folks have had the misfortune of being in an accident. So one of the problems we’re addressing today is what you should do after you’ve been involved in a car accident- it’s a surreal experience that can catch you off guard. We discuss things like diminished value and notifying your insurance company, but we also discuss how you can be financially prepared for accidents and the steps you can take to reduce the cost of insurance. Teach and Retire Rich w/ Dan Otter #851

7/10/2024
Teaching isn’t typically synonymous with accumulating vast quantities of wealth but our guest today, Dan Otter, is here to say otherwise. And actually, it turns out that teachers have a way to totally supercharge their retirement by investing even more money than they otherwise thought possible – that’s just one of the many topics we cover. But Dan Otter is an elementary school teacher turned 403b hero in the world higher ed and teachers. He is the founder of the much referenced site, 403bWise.org, and we’re pumped to discuss the different ways that teachers (a massively underappreciated profession BTW) can financially prepare for their futures. We discuss how to know whether your 403b is any good, why more options doesn’t necessarily mean better options, alternative paths to consider if your 403b is crummy, and plenty more today! Catching up to FI w/ Jackie Cummings Koski #848

7/3/2024
Nobody likes to be late to a party – the good snacks and drinks are gone, you’ve missed out on some inside jokes, and other friends may have already dipped out! It’s a bummer to feel like you’re out of the loop, because once you finally do learn about something important, like investing for your future, you’re in the disadvantaged position of having to make up for lost time. And I think that’s how a lot of folks feel when they first learn about FIRE, Financial Independence Retire early, “Sure, I’d be able to retire early too if I had heard about this 30 years ago!” But we’re here to tell you that it’s not too late, and our guest Jackie Cummings Koski is living proof that you didn’t have to start investing in your 20s in order to reach FIRE. Having only woken up to handling her finances responsibly at the age of 38, it only took her around a decade to call it quits (earning less than $100k/year), proving that you can achieve financial freedom even as a late comer. Jackie is a CFP, the author of the recently published FIRE for Dummies, and she’s also the co-host of the podcast Catching Up to FI which is going to be our theme for this episode – getting caught up with your investments! Cheap Meal Prep For Struggling Chefs w/ Frankie Celenza (Bestie) #846

6/28/2024
What do Michelle Obama and Novak Djokovic have in common? Well at the very least they’ve both enjoyed meals by today’s guest, Frankie Celenza. And if you think about it, whether you’ve lived in the White House, or you’re the number one tennis player in the world, or if you’re just scraping by on a meager income, there is nothing more elemental than our need to eat food. We’re all united by the fact that we get hungry! And while some folks might like to splurge when it comes to meals, the rest of us are looking for ways to cut those costs so we can reach other financial goals. Frankie is a Daytime Emmy award winning culinary host and his show, Struggle Meals, is all about getting the most bang for your buck in the kitchen, both for your wallet and time savings. He is truly a professional in the kitchen and today we talk about buying seasonally, how to be more efficient while we cook, canned vs frozen veggies, redefining what it means to ‘cook’, and of course some of his favorite meals that are affordable and easy to prepare. One of the reasons we’re pumped to have our guests joining us today is because it might finally be time for you to buy a car! Make Money Without Having Any w/ Ciera Rogers #839

6/12/2024
This is the episode for everyone out there who doesn’t want to work a soul crushing 9-5 job, specifically the kind of job where you’re being told what you can and can’t do, by someone else. This is an episode about entrepreneurship and starting your own business! Which even that phrase is potentially problematic, because what do some folks think of when they hear “launching a business”? Maybe they’re thinking of shows like Shark Tank, or of different rounds of funding, or proposing a business plan – and while that is how some businesses begin, the vast majority of small business owners won’t be running Fortune 500 companies nor will they be featured on the next episode of How I Built This. But those endeavoring individuals do have a great idea for a new product, or a way they can serve people who are willing to pay. And our guest today, Ciera Rogers, is here to share how she started her business: Babes, which is a women’s wear line that has been worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian and praised by Beyonce. Ciera recounts her journey in her new book “The Outsider Advantage” which comes out June 18th, how at the end of the day it’s all about solving problems, how she still is frugal at heart, and plenty more during today’s episode.
