Department Of Defense Backs Off Feeding Lab-Grown Protein

7/26/2024
EPISODE 39 DETAILS DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE BACKS OFF FEEDING LAB-GROWN PROTEIN NCBA Successfully Prevents Lab-Grown Protein in American Armed Forces' Diet Today, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) confirmed that efforts to prevent ultra-processed, lab-grown protein from showing up in the diet of the American armed forces were successful, following news that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is not pursuing lab-grown protein projects for human consumption. NCBA has worked with agriculture allies in Congress to secure the introduction of several amendments to the Fiscal Year 2025 Defense Appropriations bill, National Defense Authorization Act, and Fiscal Year 2025 Agriculture Appropriations bill, aimed at preventing lab-grown protein from ever showing up on the plates of American servicemembers. The NCBA Senior Director of Government Affairs said that “The Department of Defense can and should be on the cutting edge of science, and we respect their work to investigate defense applications for new tools and technology. However, there’s a big difference between industrial or defense applications and the food we put in our bodies. U.S. farmers and ranchers are more than capable of meeting the military’s need for high-quality protein” SPONSORS American Gelbvieh Association https://gelbvieh.org/ @AmericanGelbvieh Allied Genetic Resources https://alliedgeneticresources.com/ @AlliedGeneticResources Ranch Channel https://ranchchannel.com/ @RanchChannel Questions & Concerns From The Field? Public Health Officials Confirm Four More HPAI Cases In Humans An update on the Avian Flu, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this past weekend confirmed that four workers at a poultry farm in northeast Colorado were infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The agency confirmed that four of the workers who were culling birds after an HPAI outbreak at the commercial egg-laying operation tested positive for HPAI, and a fifth employee is presumed HPAI-positive as the agency waits for samples to be processed. The CDC is investigating whether the workers properly used recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) and will decide whether guidance adjustments to protect poultry farm employees are warranted. Most human cases of HPAI infection involved people who were not wearing recommended PPE when working with infected birds, CDC noted. The agency also is analyzing the virus sequences from the outbreak in order to determine if a change in the risk assessment should be launched. HPAI infections in humans have been confirmed in three U.S. states since March. Meanwhile, USDA reported that an estimated 152 dairy cattle herds in at least 10 states tested positive for HPAI infections so far this year. US Beef Exports Exceeded $900 Million In May Shipments of beef from the United States to foreign markets hit an 11-month high in May in dollar terms, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. The value of beef exports was 3% higher than the same month a year ago and the highest mark since June 2023. For the first five months of 2024, the U.S. beef industry exports were worth $4.29 billion, 5% ahead of the same period in 2023. Calculated per head of fed slaughter, export value in May was $410.94, up 3% from May 2023. The U.S. Meat Export Federation said that Japan, Taiwan and the ASEAN region showed strong demand for U.S. beef in May, as well as Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean. Equine Infectious Anemia confirmed in Nebraska horse The Nebraska Department of Agriculture July 4 announced a confirmed case of equine infectious anemia in a horse located in Colfax County. This is the first confirmed case of EIA since 2013 in the state. NDA staff are working with the owner and local veterinarian to monitor potentially exposed horses. The infected horse is currently quarantined and will be released once state regulations are met. Spread by blood-to-blood contact, EIA is an incurable, infectious viral disease and can be transmitted from an infected equine to an uninfected equine by blood-feeding insects such as horseflies, deer flies, or stable flies, and by people using contaminated medical equipment, such as needles, syringes, and IV sets. There are currently no USDA-approved vaccines for EIA. Equine owners can do a number of things to help protect their animals, and this includes things like implementing insect controls, keeping stables and facilities clean, eliminating standing water, using one needle per horse, separating infected equine from the healthy, and never using blood-contaminated medical equipment. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 193 DETAILS HOW TO BEAT HEAT STRESS IN CATTLE. Farmatan Heat Stress Blend With Rumetrics® by Imogene Ingredients Heat has a significant effect on increasing blood glucose levels during stressful periods in livestock. Production of the stress hormone, Cortisol, during chronic stress suppresses the immune system. The long duration of heat stress (Temperatures above 75° F} and the continuous release of gluco-corticoids may result in increased inflammation, slowing of the immune system, poor growth and lowering of fertility in bovine. Farmatan® with Rumetrics™ Both Farmatan and Rumetrics have a long track record of influencing rumen microbial activity, impacting enzyme regulation involved in carbohydrate, glucose, lipid metabolism, protein synthesis, cellular electrolyte transport, and thyroxine production resulting in whole body electrolyte balance. Benefits of Farmatan® Improves integrity of mucosa and tight junctions of the intestine, reducing “leaky gut” and pathogen entry, provides optimum use and absorption of nutrients and maintenance of a strong immune system. What is Rumetrics™ Rumetrics™ is a proprietary formulation of selected ingredients of Chromium, Capsicum, Betaine, Chelated Minerals and Critical Vitamins that together can aid in mitigating the negative physiological response to cortisol. Benefits of Farmatan Heat Stress Blend With Rumetrics® Benefits of This Combined Blend Feeding Directions: Farmatan Heat Stress Blend With Rumetrics® Feed at the rate of 7 gram per head per day for maintenance and 11 gram per head per day over 75° F. Is The National Beef Checkoff Working

7/12/2024
EPISODE 37 DETAILS NEW INDEPENDENT STUDY FINDS EACH NATIONAL BEEF CHECKOFF DOLLAR RETURNS $13.41 TO PRODUCERS & IMPORTERS Checkoff Dollars Return $13.41 To Producers A recent economic analysis of the national Beef Checkoff program found that each dollar invested in its demand-driving activities for the most recent five-year period (2019–2023) positively impacted domestic beef demand and U.S. beef exports, creating a total financial benefit of $13.41 for the producers and importers who pay into the program. Beef’s Checkoff Dollars Return On Investment (ROI) In addition to calculating a ROI of $13.41, the ROI analysis enabled the study to simulate market conditions for beef demand in the absence of national Beef Checkoff investments. For the most recent five-year period, 2019-2023, had there not been any investments in national Beef Checkoff demand-driving activities: PRICES FOR MEAT, FOOD HIT BY INFLATION Summer BBQ Season Hit By Food Inflation Inflation is leading American consumers to look for ways to save money on meat and other ingredients that make up the traditional summer BBQ, yet they are still willing to pay for an experience that leads to good memories for their families, according to experts from Rabobank. Food Inflation Over The Past 5 Years In the past five years, there has been an increase in prices due to agricultural industry effects from severe drought, higher restaurant overhead and wages, rising interest rates, geopolitical crises, and higher inflation throughout the supply chain. This has led to a food cost increase of 27% from 2019 to the end of 2023. Adding another 2.4% for 2024 leads to 32% inflation during the past five years. The food cost increase over the past five years led to 32% inflation. How To Work Cattle With Dogs

7/7/2024
We hear how to handle cattle with dogs along with how to get cattle settled and used to having dogs around them. Plus we have market information, hay for sale and lots more all wrapped into this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 192 DETAILS WORKING CATTLE WITH DOGS. Training Your Dogs To Work Cattle Introduction I have been training dogs to work cattle for most of my life. Growing up on a cow/calf operation, good dogs were essential. Getting Started While a round pen is nice, it's not necessary. Using sheep or calves initially can help lay a foundation for your dog. Teaching Your Dog To Shed Cattle To sort cattle from a large herd, your dog needs to learn to “shed.” This requires patience, as dogs may initially feel out of control. Shedding Exercise Steps Handling Different Types Of Cattle Dogs should be more aggressive with rougher cattle and gentler with quieter ones. If your dog is reluctant to work, you may be correcting too harshly. Understanding Behavior Both dogs and livestock have a “bubble.” Encourage your dog to find it for easier movement of cows and calves. Pre-Training Importance Train your dog before taking them to work to reduce mishaps and make tasks easier. By following these steps, you can effectively train your dog to work cattle. EPISODE 36 DETAILS TYSON FOODS SCALES BACK PRODUCTION OF ANTIBIOTIC-FREE BEEF AMID CHALLENGING MARKET CONDITIONS Reduction In ABF Beef Production Tyson Foods is reducing its production of antibiotic-free (ABF) beef as it navigates difficult market conditions. According to a Bloomberg report, this decision marks a significant shift in the company's strategy. An anonymous source familiar with the decision revealed that Tyson informed a major customer late last year about its inability to continue supplying ABF beef. Limitations On Open Prairie Natural Meats Brand Bloomberg also cited a document indicating that ABF beef under Tyson's Open Prairie Natural Meats brand would be restricted starting in January. This move follows Tyson's earlier decision to move away from raising chicken without antibiotics. CEO’s Comments On Market Challenges In the company’s second-quarter earnings call, Tyson CEO Donnie King mentioned that limited cattle supplies have resulted in "spread compression." The company anticipates a full-year adjusted operating income loss ranging from $400 million to $100 million. King emphasized that Tyson would focus on controllable factors, such as "managing mix to meet customer and consumer demand." Impact On Certified Angus Beef Program In addition to the changes reported by Bloomberg, Tyson recently ended an ABF beef program with Certified Angus Beef (CAB). A CAB spokeswoman confirmed this development to Meatingplace, stating that Tyson is reevaluating its antibiotic-free offerings as a whole. By focusing on these key changes, Tyson Foods aims to adapt to current market conditions while continuing to meet customer and consumer demands. Plus we have market information, cattle for sale and lots more all wrapped into this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 191 DETAILS HOW TO USE MULTIMIN & LACTIPRO. Your Best Shot at Strategic Trace Mineral Supplementation for Cattle Supports Cattle Health and Reproduction Multimin® 90 is a unique injectable solution containing zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium, proven to support cattle health and reproduction. Research shows that strategic trace mineral supplementation enhances breeding success, healthy calving, and improved immunity. Successful Breeding Using Multimin 90 improves trace mineral status in breeding stock, leading to more calves in fewer days. Healthy Calving Third-trimester injections improve cow-to-calf trace mineral transfer and colostrum quality, especially when used with a scours vaccine. Enhanced Immunity Multimin 90 boosts vaccine protection and strengthens the immune response when integrated into a vaccination protocol. Why Is Trace Mineral Supplementation Necessary? Inadequate trace mineral status in cattle can lead to suppressed immune function, lower fertility, and decreased growth. Oral nutrition programs face challenges such as: How Does Multimin 90 Work? Multimin 90 complements an oral nutrition program by rapidly increasing zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium levels in cattle during high-demand periods. Administered via subcutaneous injection, it reaches peak levels in the blood within 8-10 hours and is stored in the liver for later use. Benefits of Strategic Supplementation with Multimin 90 When to Use Multimin 90 Cows and Heifers Bulls Calves Stockers How to Use Multimin 90 By strategically using Multimin 90, cattle producers can enhance herd health, reproduction, and immunity, leading to better productivity and success. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR MULTIMIN® 90: Not for use in humans, keep out of reach of children. Multimin 90 has a pre-slaughter withdrawal time of 14 days after injection. Do not use it during the first trimester of pregnancy or in pre-ruminant calves as safety has not been established. See prescribing information. Introduction to Lactipro® Lactipro® is a rumen-native probiotic containing a live, stable strain of Megasphaera elsdenii (Mega e®), an effective lactic acid utilizer. It helps cattle producers maintain healthy rumen pH and improve profitability by accelerating finishing diets and reducing post-terminal processing mortality. Key Benefits of Lactipro® Lactipro® promotes rumen health during transitions to higher-grain diets, grazing crop residue, and as bulls move to higher energy diets during development. How Does Lactipro® Work? Naturally occurring Mega e takes weeks to handle grain-based diets effectively. Fast-growing bacteria produce excessive lactic acid, lowering rumen pH and causing health issues like acidosis. Lactipro® introduces Mega e directly into the rumen, consuming lactic acid and producing butyric acid, which promotes cell growth and better VFA absorption. The Importance of Mega e Strain MS Biotec’s patented Mega e strain is selected for its: Two Formulations of Lactipro® LactiproNXT® An easy-to-use drench available in 200 mL and 1,000 mL pouches, ideal for processing multiple cattle. What Is Happening With Cattle ID Mandate

6/28/2024
Hear the latest on what is happening with USDA’s mandatory electronic id final rule and updates from Northern Livestock Video Auction Feeder Calf Sales. EPISODE 35 DETAILS WYOMING LED BILL OPPOSES USDA CATTLE ID MANDATE? Introduction U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis and John Barrasso, alongside U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman, all Republicans from Wyoming, have introduced legislation opposing the USDA’s final rule mandating electronic identification ear tags for bison and cattle. Congressional Review Act Resolution The Congressional Review Act resolution aims to overturn the USDA’s rule, which is scheduled to take effect on November 5. This rule mandates that ranchers must equip all livestock over 18 months old with electronic identification ear tags if they are transported across state lines, with exemptions only for animals going directly to slaughter. Impact On Ranchers The Wyoming lawmakers argue that this rule, which is expected to affect approximately 11 million cattle nationwide, will financially burden cattle producers and invade their privacy. USDA’s Stance The USDA defends the rule, stating that electronic identification ear tags are crucial for quickly identifying and responding to costly foreign animal diseases. Conclusion The legislation introduced by the Wyoming representatives highlights the ongoing debate between enhancing animal disease tracking and the financial and privacy concerns of cattle producers. The nationwide outbreak of the avian virus in dairy has struck nearly 100 herds across 12 states. Bills Introduced To Help Unborn Livestock Losses U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson introduced the Livestock Indemnity Program Enhancement Act to help Texas livestock producers recover from the devastating wildfires that occurred in the Texas Panhandle earlier this year. This bill would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish an additional payment rate through the Livestock Indemnity Program for excessive unborn livestock death losses, according to the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. Cattlemen Take Aim At Government Investment In The Cultivated Space The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) issued a statement condemning a Department of Defense-sponsored research grant that will fund the development of cell-cultivated meat products by manufacturing company BioMADE. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane said, “It is outrageous that the Department of Defense is spending millions of taxpayer dollars to feed our heroes like lab rats. EPISODE 33 DETAILS MANDATORY COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING ADDED TO THE FARM BILL & SUPERIOR LIVESTOCK AUCTION UPDATES? Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD) has extended the deadline for including more Senators in his letter urging Congress to include MCOOL in the 2024 Farm Bill. Rounds says following the successful implementation of MCOOL, producers and consumers enjoyed a short-lived period of marketplace transparency. This change applied the same country of origin labeling standards to beef as the majority of other consumer goods sold in America. Unfortunately, a coalition of large meatpacking companies and foreign beef interests worked to repeal MCOOL. After Canada and Mexico filed a dispute with the World Trade Organization (WTO), Congress officially rescinded the law in 2015. Since the repeal of MCOOL, American cattle producers have experienced significant market fluctuations. Concurrently, the largest meat packers have realized immense profits through the use of forward contracting and formula-based sales. While cattle prices are currently on the rise, it is evident producers will again encounter market disruptions. As farmers and ranchers deal with a volatile market, it is imperative the federal government work to provide a level playing field. This can be achieved through supporting additional transparency in our beef labeling system. Our American farmers and ranchers work hard to provide the safest and best tasting beef in the world. Producers of foreign beef should not receive an unfair advantage when engaging in our domestic markets, especially as our competitors do not always meet American animal health and consumer safety standards. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s recent “Product of the USA” final rulemaking is a step in the right direction, but there is more work to be done. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 189 DETAILS BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE (BRD), MANAGE IT NOW. OVERVIEW OF BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE COMPLEX Bovine respiratory disease (BRD), shipping fever pneumonia, or undifferentiated fever is a respiratory disease of cattle of multifactorial etiology with Mannheimia haemolytica and, less commonly, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni ( see Histophilosis), or Mycoplasma bovis being the important bacterial agents involved. Viral pathogens may also be involved, such as bovine herpesvirus 1, parainfluenza-3 virus, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus. BRD has a multifactorial etiology and develops as a result of complex interactions between environmental factors, host factors, and pathogens. Environmental factors (eg, weaning, transport, commingling, crowding, inclement weather, dust, and inadequate ventilation) serve as stressors that adversely affect the immune and nonimmune defense mechanisms of the host animal. In addition, certain environmental factors (eg, crowding and inadequate ventilation) can enhance the transmission of infectious agents among animals. Many infectious agents have been associated with BRD. An initial pathogen (eg, a virus) may alter the animal’s defense mechanisms, allowing colonization of the lower respiratory tract by bacteria. BRD is most commonly associated with the transport and assembly of large groups of recently weaned calves into feedlots. Morbidity in these types of feeder calves often peaks within the first 7–10 days after feedlot arrival. Morbidity can approach 35%–50%, and case fatality is 5%–10%; however, the levels of morbidity and mortality strongly depend on the array of risk factors present in the cattle being fed. The use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials labeled for bovine respiratory disease is the primary treatment, with macrolides and fenicols most commonly used as first-line treatment. Prevention and control are achieved via vaccination programs, preconditioning, identification and treatment of subclinically infected animals, and biosecurity. Etiology of Bovine Respiratory Disease The pathogenesis of bovine respiratory disease involves a stress factor, sometimes coupled with viral infection, which results in suppressed immune defenses and the proliferation of bacteria in the upper respiratory tract. Subsequently, these bacteria colonize the lower respiratory tract and cause bronchopneumonia with a cranioventral distribution in the lung. Many of the bacteria and viruses involved are commensal organisms of the upper respiratory tract that can be isolated from a proportion of healthy animals. Multiple stress factors contribute to the suppression of host defense mechanisms in cattle. Weaning is a noteworthy stressor, and the incidence of this disease is highest in recently weaned calves. Transportation over long distances serves as a stressor; it may be associated with exhaustion, starvation, dehydration, chilling, and overheating, depending on weather conditions. Additional important stressors include passage through auction markets; commingling, processing, and surgical procedures on arrival at the feedlot; dusty environmental conditions; and nutritional stress associated with a change to high-energy rations in the feedlot. The individual viral and bacterial etiologies, clinical signs, lesions, and treatment are discussed under Viral Infections Associated with Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex in Cattle and Bacterial Pneumonia in Cattle with Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex. Viruses associated with BRD include: bovine herpesvirus 1bovine respiratory syncytial virusparainfluenza-3 virusbovine viral diarrhea virus Bacteria associated with...

Explore the essentials of rotational grazing and discover how to enhance your agricultural practices for sustainable success. A Comprehensive Guide to Temporary Electric Fence Wires: Polywire vs. Polytape When it comes to temporary electric fencing, two main types are available: polywire and polytape. Both options consist of fine metal filaments intertwined with polyethylene or polypropylene fibers, with the metal providing the shock and the plastic ensuring strength and visibility. Choosing the Right Polywire for Your Needs For short-distance applications, such as subdividing a pasture, a six-strand polywire is typically sufficient. However, for longer distances or areas prone to overgrowth from weeds and grass, opt for a polywire that delivers a stronger shock to ensure effective containment. The Benefits of Polytape Polytapes are known for their superior visibility, particularly in white. If you're experiencing inadequate animal control with polywire or need better visibility for safety reasons, such as fencing for horses, switching to polytape can be beneficial. Although polytape may be more expensive, the improved control and visibility often justify the cost. Essential Tools: Electric Fence Reels For ease of use and flexibility, especially if you plan to adjust paddock sizes frequently, an electric fence reel is indispensable. These reels, made from weather-resistant plastic, can hold one to two spools of polywire or polytape, making it easy to move and reconfigure your temporary fencing as needed. Explore the best practices for using polywire and polytape to optimize your temporary electric fencing system, ensuring maximum efficiency and control for your livestock management. Wylie Bice, who ranches near Killdeer, said the group is close on a final price for Texas-based Agridime, with the goal of making it an asset to North Dakota ranchers. Bice said he hopes the group can close on a deal by July 1 to take over Agridime facilities in Texas, Arizona and Kansas. He told the North Dakota Monitor he hopes North Dakota can supply about 60% of the cattle that the business will need -- about 10,000 head per year. Bice, who is among the investors who lost money with Agridime, said the group includes a former business partner of his who is in Texas and would come out of retirement to...

Cattle Industry News BIRD FLU UPDATE: NEW CASES IN MICHIGAN, NORTH DAKOTA CHECKS IN, LAWMAKERS WEIGH IN State animal health officials confirmed new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cows in Michigan. That announcement comes as North Dakota announced no cases so far and U.S. senators called for better communication among regulators to help stem the tide of new outbreaks. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced positive tests for HPAI in dairy cows in Clinton, Gratiot and Ionia counties, with additional testing expected soon. MDARD stated that the best tool available to combat the spread of HPAI, regardless of species, is using enhanced biosecurity efforts that include isolating new or returning animals on farms, monitoring the health of animals daily, and cleaning and disinfecting trailers used to haul animals. Meanwhile, officials in North Dakota reported there have been no cases of HPAI in cattle as of May 10, although the infections of dairy cows in nine other states this spring continues to be monitored, according to State Veterinarian Dr. Ethan Andress. USDA recently announced plans to provide a total of $98 million to help states and ranchers stem the spread of HPAI beyond birds as state and federal officials continue to monitor cases in 42 herds so far, including South Dakota. Enhanced biosecurity efforts are expected to remain in place as new information about HPAI in cows is gathered, officials added. PROPER COOKING KILLS H5N1 IN GROUND BEEF With the continued spread of H5N1, some have questioned the proper way to prepare beef to ensure its safety. The USDA said in its latest update that ongoing research shows that standard recommended procedures for cooking ground beef eliminates the H5N1 virus. USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service or APHIS reported that no virus remained in burgers cooked to 145 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit and...

Second Bird Flu Case In Humans & Grass Cattle Prices

5/24/2024
EPISODE 30 DETAILS SECOND U.S. DAIRY WORKER INFECTED WITH AVIAN BIRD FLU CONFIRMED - MICHIGAN According to Reuters and reported by Agweb, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said a second human case of avian bird flu (H5N1) has been confirmed in the United States since the virus was first confirmed in dairy cattle in late March. A Texas dairy worker was confirmed to be infected in April. Michigan and Texas are among nine states to report bird flu in dairy herds. Similar to the Texas case, the patient in Michigan only reported eye symptoms, the CDC said. The Michigan worker had mild symptoms and recovered, according to the state's Department of Health and Human Services. The worker had regular exposure to livestock infected with bird flu, Michigan said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it believes unpasteurized milk is the primary vector for transmitting the virus among cows, though officials do not know exactly how it spreads. Cattle Industry News ALABAMA BECOMES SECOND STATE TO OUTLAW CULTIVATED MEAT Alabama is now the second state in America where cultivated meat cannot be manufactured or commercialized as Gov. Kay Ivey on Tuesday signed a bill (SB 23) that includes the cultivated meat ban. Violating the law will be a class C misdemeanor, which carries the possibility of up to a three-month jail sentence and a fine of $500. The new law takes effect October 1, 2024. Florida became the first state to pass such a ban earlier this month, with Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill (SB 1084) into law on May 1, 2024. PROPOSALS FINALLY SEEN ON FARM BILL After months of waiting, there is movement on farm bill legislation in Congress. On May 2, 2024, both the House and Senate provided farm bill proposals. The USDA has been operating on a 1-year extension of the 2018 farm bill. That is set to expire on Sept. 30. Areas taking top priority in the two bills are conservation, nutrition programs, and energy alternatives and incentives. Deeper in the proposals, emphasis is placed on beginning farmers and ranchers. Lending is of concern with such high-interest rates and lack of credit options. Under the credit title in the House’s farm bill proposal, finance options are enhanced for new, young, beginning or veteran farmers. It also gives focus to commercial lenders’ ability to be a reliable source of credit and capital. YET ANOTHER NEGATIVE QUARTER FOR BEYOND MEAT Beyond Meat reported another sharp decline in revenues for its first fiscal quarter, and net losses that were slightly improved from the same period a year ago.
