Todays episode we talk to Alex Johnson about his dramatic AFL journey. Alex was an unbelievable talent playing 45 games in his first two season including winning the 2012 AFL premiership. That's when his story went into the most unlucky AFL player. He had 12 surgeries on his knee but stayed on their list for another 5 years and got back to play 2 more games. The second game he did his ACL again which put an end to his playing career. His Story is one of true resilience to never give up and to keep pushing on.

It is raw, unedited and vulnerable. Dylan had the great opportunity to talk to former AFL Footballer, but most importantly, friend: Majak Daw. The first-ever Sudanese born AFL Footballer. Dylan sits down with Majak, where he tells his story from his childhood and upbringing through to his against-all-odds breakthrough into the AFL System. They also discuss about Majak's new born son, who is his greatest inspiration. Majak has been through more than most people, and his biggest struggle not only nearly broke him. In late 2018, Majak made the fateful decision to take his own life, when his mental health was on a decline and started to get the better of him. This episode gets very vulnerable and Majak opens up about his Mental Health battles and how everything compounded and lead to that fateful decision. Thanks for listening!

Check in time! We are 5 and a half weeks out before we set out for our 10 Day, 1000KM Ultra Marathon (Sydney to Melbourne) Run. The last 14 weeks has been an intense training load and we are now in the final stages of our training. It’s becoming surreal now, and this week I caught up with the the other HOLLA Representative Runners for a coffee to check in. An open and raw conversation on the ins and outs of how we are all feeling physically and mentally, as well as how we are all finding the training and preparation. Started by both Blake and Senna, they have created an environment for people to step out of their comfort zone in a safe space to be valuable, to better improve their own physical and mental state of mind. Dylan only met both Blake and Senna just over 6 weeks ago and was just blown away by them, from their vision, story and passion. 5: Why we started a Mental Health non-for-profit Charity.

In this episode Dylan Conway takes you through the vision and process of starting his own mental health charity. Joining him are fellow board members Jake Plakakis and Laura-Jane Hargreaves to discuss their roles within the charity, and the ins and outs of being part of a non-for-profit organisations. The Holla Foundation was founded in 2020 and from then until now the board have been working tirelessly to get the foundation running to bring their work and ideas to life. As this is all run by volunteers with a shared view on the importance of mental health, they are working to educate people and provide support and networks to connect to. Dylan, Jake and Laura-Jane will discuss the path that Holla is taking to work closely within Schools, sporting teams and workplaces, to educate those on the importance of mental health and how you can support yourself and others knowing there is help out there. This episode will take you through step by step how far the Holla Foundation has come, what they want to achieve and the plans and goals for the future.

Having a strong vision and bringing in the right team has enabled this business to be the best. They talk about how the standard needed to lift dramatically to match the team culture vision they both had. Who you have in your business is a direct indication of where your business will go. If you want to make a successful business then you need to put team culture first.Dylan mentions how important getting to know your staff is and to know what drives them. I talk about my parent’s separating at a young age, moving houses a lot, seeing my mother get physically abused at a young age, getting a sports scholarship to one of the most prestigious private schools, not making the AFL, meeting my future wife, grinding away at 3:30am every morning unloading containers, battling depression, playing 9 years in the vfl system, having 5 surgeries including acl and back surgery, getting married to Nikki, finding out horrific and life changing things about my now estranged mother, winning 2 VFL premiships and setting up The Performance Club all at the same time. Turning a dream into a reality, Pivoting through Covid and becoming a father and why becoming the best father and husband is SO important to me.
