Today’s episode, “How one nurse went from the bedside to starting a movement to reduce nurse burnout.” About Jennifer Thietz Jennifer Thietz (nee Marais) is a master-trained nurse and author. She immigrated to California from South Africa in 2003, where she worked in acute care settings for eighteen years, most of those at the bedside. She has a wealth of experience regarding the changing face of healthcare in the USA and the current needs of nurses. In 2016, Jennifer published a book, Navigating Your Cancer Journey: A Handbook for Cancer Patients and Caregivers, by an Oncology Nurse Navigator under her maiden name, Jenny Marais, which won multiple awards. In 2023, her chapter, "Tribe of Angels: Lessons Learned from Nurses on Resilience during the COVID Pandemic," was part of an anthology that achieved Amazon's International best-seller status. Jennifer is deeply concerned about the healthcare crisis, particularly the fate of nurses suffering from compassion fatigue and burnout. Jennifer's new book, Nurses Matter: From Compassion Fatigue to Resilience/ A Nurse Movement to Overcome Burnout and Transform Healthcare,” focuses on self-care and a nurse's movement for transformational change. Today’s episode, “How one nurse went from Navy Corpsman to an entrepreneurial tech wizard.” About Liz Drewiske Liz has been in the medical profession for over 2 decades. Her career began as a Navy Corpsman in service of the Marines. Field and combat medicine built the foundation of her journey, put into practice while leading a Shock Trauma Platoon in Ramadi, Iraq. The transition to civilian life was rocky but attending nursing school while working for the Dept of Veteran's Affairs provided stability. As a nurse, Liz's first true love was working as a high-acuity NICU nurse. Caring for critically ill infants and their families guided her transition into other family-centered roles. High-risk maternity provided an opportunity to prepare families for high-risk deliveries, and it brought the perinatal and neonatal journeys together. This "big picture" vantage point planted the seed for developing a comprehensive care plan for all OB patients in her large OB/GYN practice. Thus, OB Nurse Navigation came to life. Once planted, the seed grew into a beautiful, thriving tree of consistent care and education for every expecting family who walked in the doors of our practice. The outcomes were fantastic, and another seed was planted - NavPath. Thirsting for new information, Liz took a job working for a software company. Leadership, personal development, operations, and project management were skills that came from her nearly 2 years in a new environment. This experience allowed Liz to have the confidence to make the leap to entrepreneurship, and nurse navigation was the gap she intended to fill. NavPath was born. Her goal is to empower family caregivers to care for their loved ones and utilize self-care strategies. It was the only way I could work with an old friend of mine doing nurse life care planning and she would only hire me as a sub-contractor e.g. business owner. I never imagined myself as a business owner, but now that I am, I would never want to go back. I also provide mental health counseling to women, most of whom have a history of trauma. How did I get to this point? I returned to college and got my master's degree in rehabilitation and mental health counseling at the age of 50. Before I graduated I was offered a job as an assistant to a life care planner providing research. I didn't even know what a life care planner was. Today’s episode, “How one nurse with a passion for public health nursing turned into an entrepreneur.” About Alexandria Jones-Patten In 2017 Alexandria became a Registered Nurse, dedicating three years to hospital floor duties on a busy telemetry unit. Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020 she decided to pivot to a public health role because she knew she wanted to explore her talents beyond the bedside. She spent the next two years providing care to homeless adults in shelters and temporary housing. Still, Alexandria had a passion for business that wasn't met in the public health sector. During this time she was working on her Nursing PhD and began exploring entrepreneurship. This was when she realized she could put her writing talents to use beyond academic writing. In 2022 she decided to launch a freelance writing business, 'Authored by AJP." Her primary goal is to educate the public and inspire others about heart health, using her unique blend of experiences and knowledge. I am a first-generation college student. I was born and raised in the beautiful “La Perle des Antilles”, AKA Haiti. I moved to the United Stated at the age of sixteen. I always had a passion for helping others. On Tuesday January 12th 2010, when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devasted Haiti, all I wanted was to get on a plane and help. However, I could not. It was heartbreaking watching the news and there was nothing I could do to help. Ever since, I had no doubt that I was called to serve! I have worked in different areas of nursing from outpatient dialysis to critical care. From Hepatitis C research at Columbia University to traveling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo working on medicinal plant treatment for diabetes, I have gained a wealth of knowledge in healthcare. Helping and educating others on different health topics has always been my passion. Currently I am a CTICU nurse and embarking in my entrepreneurship journey.
