Advocacy and Awareness Group of Johnson County & Ella's Hope for Autism

2/7/2022
The Advocacy and Awareness Group of Johnson County seeks to bring attention to the social injustices happening across our nation in order to promote change, starting within our local community, through a series of organized events. Ella’s Hope for Autism began in 2010, when our daughter Ella was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. Autism was new to us and we learned that early intervention was key to helping Ella-and us, as parents- learn a new way of life. At the time, resources were scarce and we started Ella’s Hope to raise funds and support for families and individuals that needed this early intervention. Michelle Kendrick-Salerno w/ Metro Lutheran Ministry & Stephanie Edemann & Sara Bullock w/ Kansas City Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

9/21/2021
Roots of the Kansas City Metro Lutheran Ministry can be traced to the 1960s. Pastors and lay member of the (then) Lutheran Church of America (LCA) and the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in metropolitan Kansas City began to explore how their churches could serve and support mission work in a changing urban climate. After several years of discernment and planning, the Kansas City Metro Lutheran Ministry became a reality on December 5, 1971 with the primary purpose to serve Jesus Christ more effectively in the metropolitan area. Dr. Walter Kloetzli, former director of the Lutheran Church-USA, Department of Urban Planning was the first Council President. Luther Johnson became the first Executive Director. Local congregations continued to join in the efforts until a total of 48 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) Lutheran churches are partners of MLM today. MLM serves clients from community assistance center locations in Jackson, and Clay Counties, Missouri, and Wyandotte County, Kansas. Sue Lewis w/ Mental Health America of the Heartland

9/14/2021
As an organization, Mental Health America of the Heartland (MHAH) has been around for nearly a century. We began our work in 1909 when Clifford W. Beers, a young businessman who struggled with a mental illness, shared his story with the world in his autobiography “A Mind That Found Itself” and created a national citizens’ group to promote mental health and improve conditions for children and adults living with these health problems. It was a revolutionary act and attracted prominent national leaders of the time, including the philosopher William James and the Rockefeller family. Sue discusses their role during the pandemic and how important for us to recognize the mental health crisis in our community. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Founded in 2001 as a summer camp to offer local musicians the opportunity to study and perform chamber music, Heartland Chamber Music has grown into one of the most nationally recognized pre-college music programs in the Midwest. The Mission of Heartland Chamber Music is to connect, engage, and inspire students of all ages through a lifetime of musical education and performance. NBC Community Development Corporation was created July 16, 2002 as the outreach arm of The New Bethel Church of Wyandotte County, Kansas City, KS. The organization was originally called New Bethel Community Outreach Ministry, Inc. though it was not complete and therefore was not active for several years. During that time New Bethel Church continued to provide outreach efforts. In December 7, 2007 the organization was renamed NBC Community Development Corporation. In 2011 under the direction of Pastor A. Glenn Brady, the corporation was moved forward by receiving a separate 501(c)3 awarded by the US Federal Government. Today, the NBC Community Development Corporation works on a wide range of projects with many collaborators to continue to provide services to Wyandotte County residents.
