Dead Show/podcast for 9/12/25

9/12/2025
We celebrate the 82nd birthday of Mickey Hart this week with a great show that took place back on his 38th birthday at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California. The recording starts with Joan Baez regaling Mickey with a 'Happy Birthday' chorus.. once we put that behind us we are led into a hot 'Minglewood' and then a quite nice 'They Love Each Other'. They amp it up a bit with a 'Mama Tried>Mexicali' then Jerry brings out 'Candyman', which leads into a 'Little Red Rooster'. A rocking 'Cumberland Blues' leads into a 'Beat It on Down the Line' and the audience tape lets us hear the crowd loving it.. 'Althea' that follows may be the highlight of the set, but the boys are not done here, with a 'Sailor>Saint' and 'Deal' to close out the first set.... Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 9/11/1981 - Friday Set 1: Banter (Happy Birthday Mickey!) New New Minglewood Blues They Love Each Other Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues Candyman > Little Red Rooster Cumberland Blues > Beat It On Down The Line Althea Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > Deal You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091225.mp3 peace...

This week on the Deadpod we have the second set from the band's performance at the beautiful Greek Theater in Berkeley California on August 18, 1989. This is pretty classic Dead for this high water period of the band, with a groovin' 'Iko Iko' to open things up, followed by the mellow 'Looks Like Rain'. Jerry brings out a classic 'Terrapin Station' leading into a fine Drums and Space. I love the 'Crazy Fingers' out of space, and the 'Stella Blue' in the ballad slot hits just right. Following the rockin' 'Lovelight' we are treated to a double encore - with 'And We Bid You Goodnight' following a nice 'Black Muddy River'. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 8/18/1989 - Friday Two Iko Iko [5:52] Looks Like Rain [8:45] Terrapin Station [12:13] > Drums [12:46] > Space [8:32] > Crazy Fingers [8:49] > I Need A Miracle [4:35] > Stella Blue [8:43] > Throwing Stones [8:39] > Turn On Your Love Light [6:22] Encore Black Muddy River [6:09] And We Bid You Good Night [2:30] (1) Comments Rex Foundation Benefit. Happy Labor Day Weekend! I hope that this first set from the 2nd night of a 3 night Rex Benefit run at the Greek Theater is a great start to your holiday! This is a fine recording of the band during one of their more interesting periods. 'Cold Rain and Snow' is always a great opener and I loved the 'Row Jimmy';. I even found the Minglewood to be quite good... and the first set Victim is unusual and goes into a very nice 'Bird Song'. The second set which we'll hear next week is more improvisational, but I hope you enjoy this fine first set.. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 8/18/1989 - Friday One Cold Rain And Snow [6:11] New Minglewood Blues [7:21] Row Jimmy [9:07] When I Paint My Masterpiece [5:02] Built To Last [4:39] Victim Or The Crime [6:01] Bird Song [11:23] The Promised Land [4:23] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod082925.mp3 I hope you have a safe and fun holiday... thanks so much for your support!

We continue this week with the second set from August 5, 1979 at Oakland California. This set starts with a fine 'Scarlet>Fire' - a warning there is a cut in the Scarlet (sadly there are several on this tape but I feel that the show still deserves your attention). The transition to 'Fire' is wonderful, as is Garcia's solo there. 'Estimated' and 'Eyes of the World' follow, then we are treated with Hamza el-Din in Drums, and a nice transition into 'Not Fade Away'. The notable 3 encores really stand out, sadly there is another cut at the end of 'Johnny B Goode' .. I hope you enjoy it ! The dog days of August are upon us.. but hopefully this week's Deadpod can see us through.. this is a good one from August 5, 1979 in Oakland. The first set certainly starts out rather laid back and so is perhaps fitting for the time... check out the transition from 'Franklin's' into 'Me & My Uncle'.. The set is well played in my opinion and the recording is good - I will tell you there is a brutal cut at the end of the 'Althea' .. ouch .. the transition from 'Lost Sailor' into 'Althea' is sweet however.. Grateful Dead Oakland Auditorium Oakland, CA 8/5/1979 - Sunday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:09] > Franklin's Tower [11:06] > Me And My Uncle [3:12] > Big River [5:50] Candyman [7:08] It's All Over Now [9:10] Brown Eyed Women [5:21] Lost Sailor [6:38] > Althea [9:15] The Promised Land [4:08] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081525.mp3 Stay cool and be kind ;)

Hey Now! Wasn't sure I could get this one out, but here goes :) This is the second set from the band's performance on August 12, 1972 at Sacramento California. I think you'll enjoy this set, there is some fine jamming here.. the opening GSET, does have the first frew notes cut.. Ramble on Rose, follows and Beat It Down the Line.. including some chatter :) The heart of the set comes as the following He's Gone goes into Drums and then into a roaring 'Other One'.. this is a beautiful set culminating in a 'Black Peter' (the only time Black Peter appeared seg'd into an Other One). The 'Truckin' that follows is a highlight as well. Hope you enjoy! \ Grateful Dead Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Sacramento, CA 8/12/1972 - Saturday Two Greatest Story Ever Told [#5:10] Ramble On Rose [5:51] Beat It On Down The Line [3:07] He's Gone [8:53] > Drums [2:48] > The Other One [16:45] > Black Peter [8:54] > The Other One [3:45] Truckin' [11:44] Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [6:05] > Sugar Magnolia [3:21#] Encore One More Saturday Night You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080825.mp3 The Days Between are almost over.. but our love is real and not fade away!

Here we are - Jerry's Birthday and the start of the Days Between - as well as the day of the first of the GD 60 concerts out in San Francisco! I do envy all those able to attend! In the meantime we have a fine show from August of 1972 to start the celebrations on this week's Deadpod. This comes from Sacramento California on August 12, 1972. We will listen to the long first set this week - then the second set when I return in two weeks. I have to be gone next week and due to the constraints of posting on my podcast host I will be unable to have another Deadpod ready for next Friday. You will find lots to enjoy here - Keith and Donna are still settling in as the band adjusts to no Pigpen, but there is plenty of great music here. I will simply call your attention to the fine jazzy 'Bird Song' and of course the 'Playin' In the Band'. There is a rare 1st set 'Stella Blue' and plenty of rocking here as well. The band is also quite chatty which is always fun to hear. Grateful Dead Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Sacramento, CA 8/12/1972 - Saturday One The Promised Land [2:54] Sugaree [7:16] Me And My Uncle [2:57] Bird Song [10:25] Black Throated Wind [6:31] Deal [5:14] El Paso [2:51#] Tennessee Jed [#2:33] Playing In The Band [12:30] Big Railroad Blues [4:05] Cumberland Blues [6:42] Stella Blue [7:26] Jack Straw [#3:38] Casey Jones [6:26] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080125.mp3 Thank you my friends for your kind support.

This week the Deadpod continues with the second set from the band's performance on July 21, 1990 at the World Music Theater in Tinley Park IL. A fine Scarlet>Fire opens things up then the first of a continuing 'Playin In the Band' theme that will reoccur thoughout the evening. The post-drums, my favorite here, is highlighted with a rare 'Crazy Fingers' and a 'Dear Mr. Fantasy', The Quinn the Eskimo encore is always a favorite! This week we continue with the second set from the Grateful Dead's final show at the Fillmore West on July 2, 1971 This starts out with an unusual 'Sugar Magnolia' opener, going into a sweet 'Sing Me Back Home'.. after a short "Mama Tried' we are thrown into a whirlwind with a great 'Cryptical>Drums>Other One', with the Other One being dedicated to Owsley who was incarcerated at the time.. while this is perhaps the highlight of this set, the closing 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road>Not Fade Away' shows the band at their rocking best. Jerry prefaces the 'Johnny B Goode' encore with a 'Here's the one it's all about' :) Grateful Dead Fillmore West San Francisco, CA 7/2/1971 - Friday Two Sugar Magnolia [6:41] Sing Me Back Home [9:48] Mama Tried [2:47] Cryptical Envelopment [2:02] > Drums [5:16] > The Other One [15:40] Big Boss Man [5:18] Casey Jones [5:36] Not Fade Away [3:49] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:22] > Jam [1:09] > Not Fade Away [3:35] Encore Johnny B. Happy Independence Day! Here's a treat to help you celebrate - the final performance of the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West bck on July 2, 1971. This fine recording captures the energy and enthusiasm of their performance that night. These first set songs are shorter, as was the norm during 1971but nevertheless I'm certain you'll enjoy them. Standouts include a great 'Me & Bobby McGee', a really fun version of 'The Rub', a somewhat slower 'Deal' and fo course the set-closing 'Good Lovin'. We'll have the second set next week.. Here is the second set of the band's performance at the Forum in Inglewood California on June 4, 1977. A long and fine set of music, luckily for us captured by a nice audience recording, results in one of the few Spring '77 shows that hasn't been commercially released. This show features quite a few 'big' numbers - Estimated>Eyes, Terrapin, Playin in the Band, Franklin's Tower.. The Playin' sandwich is really nicely done,, as is the transitions throughout the set. I hope you enjoy this one, my advice is to turn it up! This week the Deadpod goes back to a crazy show that happened back on June 21, 1971, which was only the band's second performance in Europe. Apparently they were invited to a outdoor festival in France by a rich fashion designer, who paid for the their transport, equipment and entourage to travel to Europe to play at this free festival. Well they were put in up some kind of nice Chateau, and the festival was rained out with a huge downpour. They sat around for a day or two and decided to break out the instruments and play at the grounds of the Chateau for the locals and those who traveled with them. The result is what we have here.. apparently the Chateau had quite a nice wine cellar which was liberated for the event and the audience spent a good deal of the time throwing each other into the pool.. I'm not at all sure that there were 'sets' in this show - this is how deadlists.com broke it down so I went with that - we'll hear the remainder next week.. This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982. A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. This week we venture back to a favorite venue, the Greek Theater at the University of California at Berkeley for the middle show of a three night run in the spring of 1982. Astute listeners will remember that I played the first night of this run just about a year ago, and this show is at least equally worth hearing.. The band treats us to a 'Jack Straw' opener, which then goes into a nice long 'Sugaree' with plenty of fireworks from Garcia. 'Cassidy' follows, then a funky 'Tennessee Jed' into a 'New New Minglewood Blues'. As always, the 'Cumberland Blues' that follows is a rocker, but the 'Lazy Lighting>Supplication' combo is no slouch! The set closes with a smokin' hot 'Deal'. This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982. This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, and they rock out with 'Around and Around'; into a killer 'One More Saturday Night'. You might notice there are no stops between these second set songs on this night. The encore, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' has some great Garcia vocals..
