Atul Khatri on Modi, 90s India, and Rock Music | Dostcast

Before he became one of India’s most loved stand-ups, he spent decades inside the Indian IT industry — the real Rocket Singh life, minus the Bollywood polish. He told me the actual story of how computers entered Mumbai, when fax machines died, and what the analog-to-digital transition really felt like from the inside. But this conversation went way beyond his career. We talked about marriage — whether it genuinely gets boring, why Indian parents obsess over their children’s weddings, and the quiet comedy of hen-pecked husbands. We talked about his worst rejection, his love for rock music, his brush with Jethro Tull, and the 90s scene of LP cassette piracy and booking movie tickets by hand. We got into the business of comedy too — how clubs are designed, what Indian comedy looked like before stand-up existed, and why startups keep trying to gamify human connection. And we didn’t stop there. Modi’s larger-than-life image, Soho House networking, the builder-politician nexus in Maharashtra, pressure on kids, education abroad, cultural diversity — Atul had takes on all of it. I also shared a farewell story from my own life that I’ve never told on the podcast before. Kushal Mehra doesn’t. I’ve had Kushal on the podcast multiple times. I thought I knew exactly where this conversation would go — free speech, secularism, the usual frameworks. This one went deeper. We didn’t just talk about blasphemy as an idea. We talked about how it actually operates in society — the fear it creates, the incentives it builds, and why governments often prefer controlling speech over protecting it. From “sarr tann se juda” slogans to the reality of cancelling creators, from how blasphemy laws entered India to whether humans can even offend God — this episode goes into territory most people avoid. We also get into: • Why free speech is so hard to explain (but easy to lose) • The truth about triple talaq and religious teachings • Why Kushal believes religions often oppress women the most • What a “flat society” vs a “free society” actually looks like • Concerns around Punjab and cultural shifts in India At one point, we even break down free speech in the simplest way possible — and that’s where it hits the hardest. This is not a comfortable conversation. But it’s a necessary one. If you care about the future of speech, religion, and society in India — watch this till the end. In this episode of Dostcast, Ravikant Kisana breaks down how caste quietly determines access to power, influence, and opportunity in modern India. From elite media networks to business communities, we explore how historical hierarchies continue to affect who rises, who gets heard, and who gets left behind. Ravikant talks about why he identifies as an Ambedkarite, how caste and pedigree influence entry into elite circles, and why certain communities appear to dominate specific professions. We also discuss media power structures, the role of identity in shaping ambition, and why some people choose not to play the traditional “game” of influence. This conversation dives deep into India’s social structure, the psychology of caste, and what it means for merit, identity, and social mobility in modern India. We dive deep into the machinery behind Bollywood — from gossip networks and PR manipulation to fake followers, manufactured hate, and the political undercurrents shaping the industry. Is Bollywood truly disconnected from the Indian audience? Are celebrity narratives engineered? Is the rise of South Indian superstars changing the power balance forever? Shan breaks down how Bollywood journalism works, how studios influence perception, why action films are dominating over romance, and whether the “Bollywood boycott” narrative is organic or strategically amplified. We also discuss: • Who actually controls Bollywood gossip • The hidden PR ecosystem behind stars • Are celebrity social media numbers even real? • Is Bollywood political — or pretending not to be? • Why South Indian actors are dominating pan-India • The future of Indian cinema • The big studios that quietly run the industry • His personal film consumption patterns • A must-watch war movie recommendation This is not just a film conversation — it’s about power, perception, media psychology, and the business of influence in Indian entertainment. If you care about cinema, culture, or the narratives shaping modern India — this episode will change how you watch movies. A senior research fellow at IPCS, he’s known for cutting through comfortable narratives and explaining power as it actually works—across defense economics, military technology, nuclear strategy, and global geopolitics. In this episode of Dostcast, we go far beyond headlines. Why is the US suddenly interested in Greenland—and what does it signal about the future of global power? What’s really driving Gen Z protests across Western democracies, and how organic are these movements? Why is Donald Trump economically and strategically tightening the screws on the European Union? And beneath all of this lies an unsettling question: in today’s world, do billionaires and corporations influence governments more than voters do? We also dive deep into the evolution of modern warfare—how power is exercised without tanks or missiles, how narratives replace bullets, and why the next decade of global conflict will look nothing like the last. This isn’t a debate. It isn’t ideological comfort food. It’s a clear-eyed breakdown of how the world actually functions. If you care about geopolitics, power, and the forces shaping the next 10 years—this episode is unmissable.
