EP 100: Worst Nurses Week Gifts of 2025!

5/11/2025
In this celebratory 100th episode of Nurses Uncorked, Nurse Erica reflects on the journey of the podcast and acknowledges the transition of co-host Nurse Jessica Sites. We are excited to follow Nurse Jessica's new journey and podcast, Decoding Celebrities! Nurse Erica welcomes back guest host, Dr. Matthew Garvey, DNP, MBA, RN, EMT-B, CCRN, CEN, TCRN to this week's episode. They discuss the worst gifts received during Nurses Week 2025, leading to humorous critiques. Nurses often feel infantilized by the gifts and activities during Nurses Week because many hospitals fail to genuinely appreciate their nursing staff. In this conversation, Nurse Erica and guest discuss the various activities and ways hospitals recognize their nursing staff during Nurses Week. They critique the often inadequate and insulting gifts provided by healthcare institutions, highlighting the disconnect between hospital administration and the need for support for nurses. Ultimately, the hosts emphasize the importance of genuine recognition and the need for healthcare systems to truly value their nursing staff. Did your employer make the list? EP 96: Nurses Are Trying To Kill You!

4/9/2025
In this episode of Nurses Uncorked, Nurse Jessica and Nurse Erica discuss a controversial YouTube video by popular YouTuber Papa Meat, which claims that "nurses are trying to kill you". They break down several shocking incidents involving nurses that have made headlines. They also debunk several of the examples which are not actual nurses nor are they "trying to kill you". The hosts emphasize the importance of nursing ethics, integrity, and the impact of social media on the nursing profession. They explore the case of Erin Strotman, a nurse accused of harming infants, a nurse caught in a scandalous affair with a patient, a nurse who hired a hitman, and a fentanyl scandal that led to a patient's death. They also delve into a disturbing case of "nurses" instigating fights among dementia patients. They reflect on the implications of these incidents tarnishing the nursing profession. Nurses are often unfairly judged based on isolated incidents. It is important to distinguishing between different roles in healthcare. Thank you to our sponsor, Stink Balm Odor Blocker! EP 85: Live from the Providence Oregon Strike Line

1/28/2025
Recorded live from the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center strike line on 1/25/25, strike day 16. Special thanks to the Oregon Nurses Association. On January 10, 2025, nearly 5,000 healthcare professionals began an open-ended strike, calling on Providence Health & Services to put their patients before profits by offering a fair contract to frontline caregivers. The strike includes doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers, and midwives from eight Providence Oregon hospitals and six clinics. At issue: Providence's alleged unfair labor practices, dangerously understaffed hospitals, the ability to spend more time with patients, employee healthcare, and competitive wages and benefits to be able to recruit and retain more caregivers. In this special episode, Nurse Jessica and Nurse Erica interview three of the registered nurses, an internal medicine physician, and a certified nurse midwife. The conversation includes concerns regarding hospital administration's disconnect from patient care and the impact of management decisions on provider retention. The discussion delves into the financial dynamics of the organization, the importance of fair compensation, and the need for genuine negotiations to ensure safe patient care. They discuss issues such as high turnover rates, safety concerns related to staffing ratios, the impact of insurance changes, while criticizing Providence Health's tactics and corporate greed. The conversation underscores their determination to hold the line until their demands are met. Thank you to our sponsor, Stink Balm Odor Blocker!
