So today we will talk about how to know when your family is ready for in school instruction. The first half of the show been English in the second half will be in Spanish. Welcome back to the Ask Dr. B. Good podcast where we try to answer a lot of the questions that are going on in our Legacy world and sometimes outside of our Legacy world. Today we’re going to concentrate on going through the reopening of school manual that every district in Texas had to put together. We want to go through it even though it’s about 28 pages because it answers a lot of the questions that parents have about the school safety protocols being put into place and can help with the decision as to whether parents want to bring their kids back to school or not (when that decision is finally allowed). We also will be placing this podcast on the Legacy website so that it’s available to you to listen to at your leisure. Today, we will start preparing for the return to school by having on our district RN, Ms. Ortiz and a newcomer to Legacy Laura Montoya, our new bilingual elementary counselor, for Mesquite. Ms. Ortiz will be talking about the wearing of masks and hand washing and what parents can do at home to start preparing children for when they come back to school. Ms. Montoya will be sharing some mental health advice for children since we are still in the COVID time period and children still need to be helped to understand this pandemic through different interventions.

Today we will have breaking news on our school calendar, district updates from our facilities and operations directors, and a special request from our enrollment manager. Come listen to the latest Legacy information and write your questions and comments in the comment section!

Clearance Glover, aka Professor Freedom, will be joining us to chat about the current social unrest and the opportunity we have for a “New America Movement”. He will also review a book called, “The Lies My Teacher Told Me” about how social studies and history have been taught in American classroom for generations. Join us for this interesting and progressive look at how we can turn racism into an anti-racism movement!

Today, we will be going over some serious safety protocols that are being put into place and will be in place by the time school starts in August. We’re bringing on Buddy Davis, our facilities director and Staci Weaver, our school operations director, to share with you all the plans that we have That must be turned into the state of Texas for approval but that we want to put into place to make sure we have the safest school available when our teachers, staff, and our scholars come back.

Today’s Podcast will be full of recent Legacy news involving COVID and graduation. Then we will have a visit with two of our longer serving Legacy School Board members, President and Chair Byron Ricks and Member at Large, Megan Bauer. We will go down memory lane, sharing Legacy stories and also sharing some of what Legacy’s future might look like because of this COVID time.

In the last few weeks we have talked with parents and teachers about what it has been like to shelter in at home. Today, we will be chatting with Legacy scholars who will share what it has been like for them! We will ask the questions like: -which one of you can tell me what you thought 6 weeks ago during spring break when you for first heard we might close -how did you react when you learned you would have home-based school? -how is home-based school going? -has your family established a routine yet at home that makes the day more normal? -what do you like about home-based school? What do you not like or wish was different? -how has your relationship with your teacher changed during this COVID time? -what are you doing now during this time that you hope continues next year? -how are you staying positive during this time? -are you making sure you are getting enough downtime from the computer and exercising? We may not be able to get to all the questions but we will try!

We continue our focus on spotlighting our teachers as they navigate through this new online COVID environment. This time we will chat with elective teachers. From Plano: Mr. Smathers, Ms. Ottman, Ms. Gallegos,fFrom Mesquite: Coach Denson and Ms. Burns. They'll be answering questions like: -What were your feelings during Spring Break when we were entering the "Should we close schools?" period? -Once school closed, first for a week and then for longer, how did that change your thoughts about how to do your elective class online? -How do you actually do your class online? -How has attendance been? -What are you doing differently now then the first week or two of closure? -What skills/practices have you learned during this time that you will you bring into school when it starts up in the fall? Why? We know you will enjoy hearing how the elective teachers have used their creative skills to bring engaging music, drama, PE and more to your children!

Today's podcast is a conversation with Legacy teachers and teaching assistants about what it is like to function in this new COVID environment where we are buildiung hte plane while flying it. Today we will be sharing many of the operational things being done behind the scenes to make sure we are able to serve our school community with lunches and instruction. We also will share two videos. The first one is about the need to establish routines and family norms/expectations together and this video shows you how to do this. Then, we will chat with Buddy Davis, our director of facilities who will share about the new meal pick up schedule that starts next week. Staci Weaver, senior director of school operations is next, with information about the laptop deployment and what to do when the laptop at home has an issue. She will also share how we are working to keep both you and our employees safer through the distribution of meals and instructional packets and the dropoff of those packets each week. Mr. Chaparro, the MW HS director will share how he and his team were able to get 100% of the scholars their laptops! Good work, Mr. Chaparro and team! Dr. Mann, the SPED director will talk about how her department is continuing to meet the needs of SPED scholars even in the online instruction world. Finally, Ida Dominguez, the GT/EL coordinator will tell how we are meeting the needs of our English Language Learners as well as the gifted and talented scholars as well. As a special treat, we have included at the end a short video on COVID scams and how to avoid them. Wow! So much information in a short podcast! Today we are going over what Legacy and public education in the state of Texas has accomplished as far as preparing for and executing a meal plan and an instructional plan for our families. We will touch a bit about what we've accomplished over the last two weeks, what instructional platforms we are using for what grades, and a couple of comments about Google Classrooms you might need to know. We also have Mesquite nurse Maggie Ortiz and Plano nurse medic Cynthia Ferguson with us with some COVID-19 reminders. They even will chat about what they are doing differently at home to get through this. We also will share some coping strategies for depression that often comes at times like these.
