Trauma-Informed Design in School Architecture

4/3/2024
School safety extends far beyond fortifying against external threats. While it's crucial for schools to be secure environments, true safety encompasses more than just repelling intruders and weapons. A genuinely safe school fosters an atmosphere where students, staff, and teachers feel secure not only during emergencies but also in their day-to-day activities. However, the conventional approach to school design often prioritizes security measures that result in a stark, "prison-like" atmospheres. In our latest Better Learning Podcast episode, we dive deep into an often overlooked aspect of education: the design of school buildings. Imagine stepping into a classroom where every corner, every color, and every space is carefully crafted to nurture rather than hinder learning. Deepa Bharatkumar, an architect at Bassetti Architects, brings her 17 years of experience to the forefront as she shares insights into how the built environment impacts our educational experiences. One of the key takeaways from the conversation is the importance of pre-design work and stakeholder engagement. Deepa emphasizes that successful school architecture projects are not just about blueprints and construction; they're about understanding the needs and experiences of the people who will inhabit these spaces. But the journey doesn't end once the buildings are erected. Post-occupancy evaluation becomes a critical tool in identifying areas for improvement and informing future design decisions. By continuously refining our approach and sharing findings within the design community, we can pave the way for continuous improvement in education. Takeaways Trauma-informed design is crucial in creating safe and supportive learning environments in schools. Pre-design work and stakeholder engagement are essential for successful school architecture projects. Post-occupancy evaluation helps identify areas for improvement and informs future design decisions. Sharing findings and resources within the design community can lead to continuous improvement in education. As an architect at Bassetti Architects in Portland, Oregon, Deepa is deeply aware of how the built environment affects people. She sees educational design projects as an opportunity to serve some of the most important people Bassetti designs for – children. As the mother of two, she places high importance on creating schools that are rewarding and enriching for their users and a landmark for the surrounding community. Over her 17 years in the profession, she has become an advocate for listening to students’ voices, in addition to teacher and district voices, to create spaces that address the needs of the individual and help to create equity within our educational environments. Inequalities of Standardized Testing

3/27/2024
Are standardized tests truly the gatekeepers to higher education, or are they just another hoop to jump through in academics? In this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, Kevin Stoller delves deep into this contentious topic with Shaan Patel, the mastermind behind Prep Expert. Brace yourselves for a conversation that will challenge your perceptions of education, standardized testing, and the road to success. It's no secret that college entrance exams hold immense power over a student's future. Sean Patel knows this firsthand. Despite being a stellar student, he grappled with test anxiety and uncertainty when facing the SAT. But here's the twist: Patel didn't accept defeat. Instead, he went on a journey of self-discovery and relentless preparation, ultimately increasing his score an astounding 640 points to perfection. Patel's improvement wasn't just about acing a test; it was about shattering the myth that standardized testing is an insurmountable barrier for those who don't fit the mold. This shows that the current system is flawed. Standardized testing, though intended to level the playing field, often ends up exacerbating inequalities. It's a game where the rules seem arbitrary, and victory eludes many deserving candidates. In our conversation, Patel doesn't just critique the status quo; he offers tangible solutions. From reimagining the education system to prioritizing skills over scores, he lays out a roadmap for reform that's as inspiring as it is pragmatic. Takeaways College entrance exams play a crucial role in the college admissions process and can significantly impact a student's chances of getting into their desired university. Education should focus not only on content but also on developing skills and traits such as self-motivation, hard work, and time management. Standardized testing provides a merit-based framework for evaluating students and can help differentiate between individuals in a system with grade inflation. The education system can sometimes feel like a game, with students and schools trying to navigate the rules and achieve the best outcomes. Life can be seen as a game, with individuals striving to get ahead and succeed in various areas such as business and career. Equal opportunity is important, but making everyone equal in outcomes may not be realistic or desirable. The education system faces challenges in balancing equity and access with the realities of the real world. Drive, grit, and self-motivation are crucial for success, regardless of one's circumstances. The Fight Against Gender Barriers in Educational Leadership

3/13/2024
Despite strides towards gender equality, women have long been underrepresented in educational leadership, facing systemic biases that hinder their advancement. In this episode, School Superintendent Lisa Leali sheds light on the pervasive biases that continue to shape perceptions of women in leadership. She emphasized that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done in dismantling the structural barriers that prevent women from ascending to positions of power and influence. The road to leadership is often fraught with challenges, and for women, these challenges can be compounded by societal expectations and cultural norms. From implicit bias in hiring practices to the lack of representation in decision-making bodies, women face systemic hurdles at every turn. In addition to advocating for systemic change, Lisa emphasizes the importance of mentorship and support networks for women in leadership. She believes that by lifting each other up and sharing our experiences, we can create a more supportive and empowering ecosystem for women leaders to thrive. What actionable steps can we take to dismantle systemic biases and create more inclusive environments for women in educational leadership? Takeaways Building trust and collaboration are essential for navigating challenging situations. Addressing achievement gaps and improving equity should be a priority in education. Leaders should seek resources, learn from others, and create a culture of continuous improvement. Barriers for women in leadership roles need to be addressed, and the selection process for superintendents should be reevaluated. Dr. Lisa Leali has been Superintendent of Schools for Lake Bluff Elementary School District 65 since July 2020. Dr. Leali has over 20 years of experience in public education and earned her master’s degree in Educational Leadership in 2007 from Northeastern Illinois University and her doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2010 from National-Louis University. Her dissertation was titled “Joyful Classrooms, Successful Kids: A study in the connection between joy and learning.” Leali has served as a consultant on standards-based reporting and writing instruction for school districts in Lake and Cook Counties, has presented regionally for the Illinois Association for Curriculum Development on data and assessment and has presented nationally on the topics of instructional coaching, district leadership and superintendent evaluation. Rethinking Education From Authoritarianism to Empathy

3/6/2024
Have you ever pondered the essence of education? In a world filled with standardized curricula and rigid structures, where does true learning thrive? Gary Stager, a seasoned teacher educator, voices his frustration with the prevailing state of education. His insights, shared in a recent conversation with Kevin Stoller, delve deep into the challenges and opportunities within our educational systems. Stager's narrative is one of disillusionment with the status quo. He laments the lack of appetite for change, noting a troubling shift towards authoritarianism and fundamentalism in schools. The upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated these trends, pushing education further down a path of conformity. At its core, education should prioritize the holistic development of students. It's not merely about preparing them for college or standardized tests but about fostering empathy, social capital, and critical thinking skills. How can we, as educators, parents, and advocates, come together to foster a more empathetic and inclusive approach to learning? Takeaways The current state of education is frustrating, with a lack of appetite for change and a shift towards authoritarianism and fundamentalism. The science of reading debate oversimplifies the complex process of learning to read and fails to consider individual differences and cultural contexts. There is a need for diverse models of education that allow students to fall in love with learning and pursue their passions. Promoting and sharing stories of successful educational models is crucial in challenging the status quo and inspiring change. Higher education is valuable not only for personal growth but also as a statistical predictor of longevity. The focus on college admissions has created an artificial crisis and narrowed the paths for students. Education should prioritize creating memorable experiences and fostering social capital. The current education system needs to shift its focus away from college and towards the holistic development of students. True conversations about education and reevaluating goals are essential for meaningful change. In addition to being a popular keynote speaker at some of the world’s most prestigious education conferences, Gary Stager is a journalist, teacher educator, consultant, professor, software developer, publisher, and school administrator. An elementary teacher by training, he has taught students from preschool through doctoral studies. In 1990, Dr. Stager led professional development in the world’s first laptop schools and played a major role in the early days of online education. Governor Doug Ducey: Pioneering Education Reform in Arizona

2/28/2024
Governor Doug Ducey is known as one of America's most successful entrepreneurs and most successful governors. In this episode, Governor Doug Ducey provides insights into the education landscape in Arizona, drawing from his background in business and politics. He emphasizes the importance of innovation and choice in the education system and discusses success stories such as charter schools and programs like Teach for America. The conversation delves into various aspects of education, including competition, school choice, fundamental education, innovation, and the role of community colleges. Governor Ducey also touches on the future of free enterprise and economic freedom. Takeaways Governor Ducey was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, where he began his career in business with Procter & Gamble, and later served as CEO of Cold Stone Creamery. There, Ducey led the expansion of the ice cream franchise from one single store into a business with 1,400 locations in the United States and 10 other countries. Elected Arizona’s 23rd Governor in 2014 and reelected by an even wider margin in 2018, Ducey successfully championed historic policy initiatives, enacting the lowest flat income tax rate in the nation, introducing a first-in-nation law that requires students to pass a Civics test before graduating from high school, knocking-down licensing requirements that stood as a barrier to work, and eliminating or improving over 3,365 regulations resulting in the equivalent of a $183 million dollar tax cut. Ducey may be best known for pioneering Education Scholarship Accounts and universal school choice – providing every family with the opportunity to have their student attend whatever school is best for them. As the Hill reported, Arizona’s program “has become the standard that school choice advocates argue other states need to emulate.” Legendary Conservative Columnist George Will described Ducey as the “most successful 21st century governor.” Under Governor Ducey’s leadership, Arizona also experienced unparalleled growth with the state’s economy having boomed while the size of government has shrunk. When Ducey left office, Arizona’s government employed 5,000 less state workers than when he took office, and the state’s economy added over 500,000 private sector jobs. Helping Small Rural Schools Give Students Premium Opportunities

1/24/2024
Small rural schools often face challenges in providing diverse career training opportunities for their students. Limited resources and infrastructure can hinder students from gaining exposure to high-demand, high-wage positions upon graduation. Recognizing the need for a transformative solution, McCamey ISD, in collaboration with three other districts, took a bold step to kick off the Permian Basin Innovation Zone (PBIZ). This initiative stems from the belief that every student, regardless of their school's size or location, should have access to quality career training. PBIZ is not just an ordinary program; it's a Texas Education Agency (TEA) backed initiative that goes beyond traditional boundaries. The program is designed to facilitate collaboration among small rural schools, allowing them to pool resources, share students, and even exchange staff. This collaborative effort aims to create a dynamic learning environment that mirrors the real-world demands of the workforce. PBIZ breaks down the barriers that often limit rural students. By collaborating with neighboring districts, schools can offer a broader range of trades and vocational programs. This enables students to explore and graduate with valuable skills that align with high-demand and high-wage positions in the job market. PBIZ isn't just about providing technical skills; it's a holistic approach to education that considers the unique needs of rural communities. By fostering collaboration, PBIZ ensures that students not only receive quality training but also gain a broader perspective on the career opportunities available to them. In this episode, learn about the transformative impact of PBIZ on rural education, gain insights into Mr. Valencia's journey and his efforts to enhance learning opportunities, and explore Elizabeth Hegi's expertise in education technology and creating innovative learning environments. Mr. Michael Valencia is the Superintendent of McCamey Independent School District. He has served in various positions throughout his 22 year educational career. Michael began his career with Pecos Barstow Toyah ISD as a teacher and coach. He is married to his wife Ashley, and together, they share six wonderful children. Elizabeth Hegi is with Kay-Twelve and has over 17 years experience working with school districts in Texas in the Education Technology, School Photography and Yearbook industries. Most recently she partnered with school districts to provide technology solutions to their campuses. She is excited to continue partnering with schools to assist them in creating more unique, collaborative, and effective learning spaces. She has lived and worked in the Houston area most of her life, and now resides in New Braunfels with her husband and three children.
