This is the Check A Pro radio show! Check A Pro Joe has assembled a team of pre-qualified home service contractors to bring you the latest in services products and techniques now here's your host the man with a hard hat and tool belt check a pro Joe sometimes bigger isn't always better in terms of your air conditioning system a lot of people say hey I want the biggest AC unit because I want to be cooler than my neighbors I'm not so sure it works like that so I've asked my friend Bruce gammon he is an expert in air conditioning and heating from Gammon’s heating and cooling Bruce for you I'm great Joe how are you hey I'm fantastic so bigger is not always better right I'm pretty sure about this it's not necessarily bigger for more cooling I think it has to be sized right doesn't it well maybe if you're out fishing maybe if you're moose hunting bigger it could be better OK yeah but let's talk about air conditioning here for a minute alright great even heating oversized air conditioning units #1 the upfront cost is higher the second thing I use more energy higher energy bills because they take a lot more power to cool your home the youngest lifespan is shorter what does that mean well the unit cycling off and on too many times per day it's not doing a good job keeping a nice steady even temperature throughout the home when we oversize heating and air conditioning systems the system comes on it brings the house down to the set point that you're asking for with your thermostat and it shuts off very quickly then everybody knows what the next thing happens the house warms right back up or cools right back off and guess what the system comes back on again so we're starting a softening system too many times per hour which has a big impact on the mechanical components of that system they don't last you know I was going to say when we are trying to in the heat of the summer to reduce humidity which can happen to us it's important that that system isn't cycling on and off too often because we could have and we have humidity here in Maine we could have a problem with the AC system not doing its job as a dehumidifier absolutely that's absolutely correct so a air conditioning system is a moisture removal system that's what that does so when we oversize systems it doesn't run long enough to really pull that moisture out of the air like it needs to so the humidity levels tend to stay higher in the space when you have an oversized system so people will complain that 68 degrees in there but the humidity is really high you have an oversized system it's not running long enough to really get the moisture out of the air and do its job yeah so if you've got a 1200 square foot home and Gammon’s says...

Um The other thing we can do the way we control our systems, thermostats. There's a lot of great uh products out there when it comes to high efficiency systems. There's also thermostats out there that will fit everybody's uh, need in their homes and different people like different looks of different thermostats and different colors and their smart thermostats that cover all those bases. Should I Upgrade To A Smart Thermostat?

4/3/2023
"The system can alert your professional sometimes where there is an issue with the system or I mean, it gets cold pipes will freeze pipes will burst and create a really big mess. And people are generally very unhappy with us when they have that big mess." - Bruce Gammon, Heating & Cooling Expert Everybody seems to adding new technology to their lives. Smart phones, home automation and so on. Did you know that you can install a thermostat that is 'SMART'? Yes, these smart thermostats can be programmed to change the climate in your home. They can also be adjusted remotely with a computer or phone and will begin to learn what you and your family want. Bruce Gammon from Gammon's Heating & Cooling discusses smart thermostats with Jim Klauck - AKA - Check A Pro Joe on this podcast. Visit Us At - Gammon's Heating & Air You Can Call Anytime: (207) 286-3400. Podcast Episode Transcript: Whether we like it or not. Technology is here. There's a lot of A I going on, right? Artificial intelligence. And you know, this is great. We can do so many things today. We couldn't do years ago. This is also true for your home in terms of heating and cooling. I've asked an expert in the air conditioning and heating business to join me. His name is Bruce Gammon from Gammons in Maine. Hey, Bruce, how are you? I'm good, Joe, how are you? I'm doing great. So something came in a number of years ago called a smart thermostat. These are thermostats that um may be smarter than we are. They're intuitive. Uh they can be um adjusted from anywhere in the world. So if you go on a vacation, you can actually adjust it with your phone. You can actually even talk to your systems in your home. If you have an Amazon Box or if you have a Google device and you can say turn the thermostat up, turn it off. And it also does some other stuff which I want you to talk about, which is, it gets to know who you are and your family and the trends. So should people upgrade to a smart thermostat? I like that. Yes. Yes. So it's that simple. The question is, why wouldn't you? Ok. What, what is your fear of upgrading? Some people don't like technology? We're in Maine, we get that. There's a lot of uh Yankee ingenuity here. So some of the, a couple of the benefits of a smart thermostat are, like you just mentioned, the system gets to know your trends. The system can alert your professional sometimes where there is an issue with the system or I mean, it gets cold pipes will freeze pipes will burst and create a really big mess. And people are generally very unhappy with us when they have that big mess. So these system, these thermostat smart thermostats, um you know, if you're down in Florida on vacation in Texas, California and, and uh your system falls below a certain set point or your temperature does inside your home, it's gonna send you an alert. It could send you a contractor an alert. So there's a couple of things uh to answer your question is yes. And then there's also the energy saving side as well. Do we need to run our systems? Um And we need to keep our house at 70° in the winter when we're gone for a month. Probably not. Yeah. So in the old days when you went on vacation, I remember this because my, my parents would uh would say, hey, uh, Joe, go, uh, to the thermostat as we're on our way out to go on a vacation to Florida. Uh, before we locked the door, would you turn it down to 60? We don't want the pipes to freeze. We figure, I mean, you know, probably 50 would be good if there was 50 on the thermostat. And that was all manual back then and no one could change that temperature until we came back home. And certainly there was no way to tell if the system was on or off back then today....

Is Financing A Good Option When Replacing My Furnace Or Air Conditioning System?

3/27/2023
"There's financing options for a low couple dollars more a month. You can throw that into your system replacement and for a couple more bucks a month." - Bruce Gammon, Heating & Cooling Expert Is financing a good option for you? Well, if you need a new heating and air conditioning system is just may be the ticket to immediate comfort. Bruce Gammon from Gammon's Heating & Cooling discusses this with Jim Klauck - AKA - Check A Pro Joe on this podcast. Check out this episode of Gammon's Heating & Cooling Podcast to find out more about proper sizing of air conditioning units in you home ... Visit Us At - Gammon's Heating & Air You Can Call Anytime: (207) 286-3400. Podcast Episode Transcript: This comes up a lot financing. Should I finance my new air conditioning system? My heat pump, my furnace. Do I need to wait to save up for it? That's a good question. So, I've asked an expert in the air conditioning and heating world. His name is Bruce Gammon. He's in Maine and he, he's just a guy who knows everything. So I brought him onto the program today as the expert. Hey, Bruce, how are you today, buddy? I'm good, Joe. I'm not sure about the everything part, but, um, we can help a little bit as we can. So we would be living in very small homes and driving modest cars if it wasn't for financing, that's what we tend to do. But what's interesting is a lot of people will say I really don't want to do that home improvement project unless I can pay cash. Uh, but that's not always the case. Right? Sometimes it's a good idea to finance. Sure. So that's right. And, and there's a lot of people out there that do wanna save up and they wanna pay cash. And my, I guess my response to that is, you know, you have this system that you have now that you're heating or you're cooling your home with. And that system operating cost may very well indeed, outweigh the cost of a monthly payment to put a new system in and financing. You know, that's a good point, Bruce, you're already paying the utility company over time. Right. Wouldn't it be nice to have a worry free system? So, if, if you're heating and air conditioning system, your heat pump, whatever you're using to have comfort in your home is getting on in years. 10, 12, 15. God forbid, 20, 25 years, which it could be in some systems, you know, can last that long, especially a heating system. Well, wouldn't you like the peace of mind knowing that just for a few dollars a month, you've got the latest and greatest thing and you don't have to wake up to a cold bathroom floor. Absolutely. And you know, the other benefit to the financing is this, there's, there's other things in that system that we could add to that system to help, uh, improve the air quality of the home or things like the bathroom floors to get them warm that people don't have the cash flow. But hey, there's, there's financing options for a low couple dollars more a month. You can throw that into your system replacement and for a couple more bucks a month, you know, you can make a payment on it and afford it. It makes things affordable if you're rolling around in that new Chevy suburban. Hm. It's probably financed. And that nice new home probably is maybe for 30 years. Why not? For a short period of time? Finance a brand new heating and air conditioning system because I've said this before on the program, we spend 30% of our time in our beds, which means we spend at least 30% of our time in our homes. Probably a lot more than that if we added it up, even though we think we work more than we are at home is probably not true. We're at home more than we work and that's probably two thirds of the time. So you may as well be comfort with, uh, you may as well be comfortable with a home comfort system, which is your air conditioning heating system, Bruce as always. Thank you so much for your time...

Does Gammon’s Heating and Cooling Offer Maintenance Plans?

3/24/2023
"We're gonna call and give you a detailed report after the maintenance is done. It's kind of a set it and forget it type of system and that's the way it should be." - Bruce Gammon, Heating & Cooling Expert Bruce Gammon from Gammon's Heating & Cooling checks in with Jim Klauck - AKA - Check A Pro Joe on this podcast. Bruce talks about the ins and outs of Heating and Air Conditioning Maintenance Plans. Check out this episode of Gammon's Heating & Cooling Podcast to find out more about proper sizing of air conditioning units in you home ... Visit Us At - Gammon's Heating & Air You Can Call Anytime: (207) 286-3400. Podcast Episode Transcript: You know, they say that we spend about eight hours in our beds sleeping. That's a third of our life. So we put money into that, right? Because we want to be rested and that's where we're spending 30% of our time. If we're spending that much time in our beds, they're generally in our bedroom in our home, which means we're spending probably at least half of our days, not to mention the weekends in our homes. So you wanna be comfortable, you want your comfort system, your heating and air conditioning system to be operating well? Ok. So that means you should probably get them maintained with a maintenance plan. I've asked Bruce Gammon. He is one of our experts here on the radio program to join me today to see what Gammons does to help their clients. Hey, Bruce, how are you? I'm good, Joe. How are you? I'm fantastic. Ok. The question of the day is, can you help your clients with maintenance plans? That's a great question. As always, you always have great questions. Yeah, that's what I do. So can we help our, our, our clients and customers with maintenance plans is an is. That's an absolute yes, we sure can. Yeah, and go ahead, Joe. Yeah. So go ahead and explain that. How can you help them? Sure. So we have a beautifully, um a beautiful, not beautifully beautiful system that we set up inside of our building and our software that automates this so we can get customers, clients set up with a annual bi, annual quarter, quarterly, any custom maintenance plan they would like for their oil gas, air conditioning, heat pump system, mini splits and we set it up and it all over news for the customer. And, uh, there's no need to call us in. We're gonna call and check on you. We're gonna call and give and, or give you a detailed report after the maintenance is done. It's kind of a set it and forget it type of system and that's the way it should be. So many people wait until something breaks. They do, they wait until something breaks, they don't maintain it. What's nice about having a maintenance plan is that the cost is generally spread out over time, but your systems are protected all the time. They've just been looked at within so many months and these plans allow for you to have a worry free life because if something does go down, let's say it's, it's, it's July or August and the air conditioning system just goes off, maybe it's a capacitor or something. Gamma is gonna come out and fix it. Right away. Absolutely. And with our maintenance plans, you know, the other benefit to that too, Joe is that, you know, customers are gonna get priority service, they're gonna get front of the line passes when they're on our maintenance plans. Absolutely. Yeah, and that's what they want. So I totally recommend having a maintenance plan with Gammons. All of Bruce's information is located in the description of this podcast. It's just one click away to make an appointment and their phone number is there as well. Bruce as always. Thank you so much for your expert opinions today. Much appreciated. Same to you, Joe.
