After fifteen years of practice as a veterinary technician, Cathy went on to study canine rehabilitation at the University of Tennessee. All this was before founding FlowDog, a stand-alone, full-service small animal physical rehabilitation facility in Waltham, MA. In 2017, Chris sold her business to the esteemed Angell Animal Medical Center of Boston, and is now podcasting, consulting for a tech company in the veterinary space, providing concierge mobile pet rehab, and working getting a product to market that will help our pets. Of course, Chris prioritizes enriching the lives of her twin Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Julep & Baxter, while indulging in all the snuggles they are willing to share with her!

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome - Who, What, and Why!

6/25/2024
PetAbility Podcast hosts, Cathy and Chris, once again lend their experiences and expertise to the show - this time discussing Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome. With the popularity of Frenchies and other smoosh-faced dogs exponentially increasing world-wide, caretakers of these endearing breeds need to be equipped to address some commonly concurrent medical issues. For example, their unique anatomical features negatively impact their ability to not only breathe, but also regulate their body temperature. This can lead to chronic respiratory distress, heat intolerance, and even death. However, there are surgical options as well as environmental changes, both at home and in physical rehab, that can improve these little nuggets' quality of life. Rehab Rewind- Believing in Grieving with Laurie Levine LMHC

6/11/2024
If you’ve ever had the profound pleasure of loving a pet, you’ve undoubtedly experienced grief when they pass. But the loss of a pet is distinctive because our relationship with our pets is unique: non-verbal, ever-present, physical in nature, and full of unconditional love. We often have long-term and intense relationships with our pets that we have with no other human on earth. So to feel grief when our pet dies is real, wrenching, and normal. Laurie Levine helps us to understand how this loss can feel invisible in a society that has difficulty with death and dying, thus grieving the loss of a pet can feel very lonely. Laurie explains that grief is the other side of love. Pet grief is different; it is not a linear process, but a journey. In this episode we discuss the emotions of relief, guilt, and even embarrassment when our pet dies. Laurie discusses the importance of memorializing our pets and gives advice on rituals to help us through the grieving process. Sudden death vs. prolonged decline - how does this impact grief? Is there such a thing as anticipatory grief? What is a good death? How is euthanasia not only a responsibility, but also a gift? Finally, how can we support others who are grieving the loss of their pet? Laurie offers phone, virtual, or personal sessions, as well as drop-in support groups in Arlington, MA, at SleepyDogVeterinary. P: 781-350-8219 E: missmypets@gmail.com Support the Show. Special Needs Animal Rescue League with Christina Powell

4/16/2024
Listen as Christina Powell tells us the story of Special Needs Animal Rescue League (SNARL). This SNARL is bound to make you smile! What started as a personal rescue of one wobbly German Shepherd became a multi-organization, multi-state/province, two-country machine that takes "red list" dogs from other shelters and finds them their forever homes. In other words, SNARL says "yes" to those who have been overlooked and placed in high risk situations due to their special needs, primarily neurological disabilities. Lee Ridings of Furgiven Animal Sanctuary joins us to elaborate on the collaboration of their two rescues to benefit the most dogs. As Lee says, these dogs may be different, but they are not broken. Each has so much love to give if just given the chance. Whether it's financial support, volunteerism, or foster/adoption, next time consider special needs dogs - they need us. Feed is NOT Food with Dr. Judy Morgan

3/5/2024
A healthy pet starts with healthy nutrition, naturally! After all, “you are what you eat." That same adage applies to both us and our pets. Judy Morgan, DVM, CVA, CVCP, CVFT emphasizes that food is food - there should be no need to qualify what we eat as "people food,” nor what we feed our dogs and cats as “pet food.” Many commercial dog and cat foods contain the bare minimum to qualify as "complete and balanced" - a true misnomer. Further, food choices can impact chronic illnesses such as hearth disease and cancer. In addition to medcial issues, proper diet can influence behavior, resulting in less anxiety and more contentment. The bottom line is food, not feed, will help your pet thrive. Listen as Dr. Judy Morgan of Naturally Healthy Pets dispels many myths and helps us better advocate for our dogs and cats by feeding them a proper diet. Management of Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) Injuries with Dr. Christin Finn

2/6/2024
Located in the knee, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries are the most common orthopedic injuries in dogs. Yet there is little consistency or agreement about how to manage this condition. It goes well beyond surgery vs. no surgery. Pet parents angst about what to do to help there dog's knee pain and function, then often second guess themselves once they decide. Rest assured that there is a multitude of options to choose from and there is no one right - or wrong - answer. Along with describing the CCL's function and mechanism of injury, Christin Finn DVM, CVA, CVSMT, CCRT, discusses that treatment is often multifaceted and a CCL injury is not an emergency. So, the good news is that you've got time to explore viable alternatives that are right for YOU and YOUR PET. For more information about cruciate ligaments and other topics, go to finndvm.com. Making Simple Movements into Exercise with Bobbie Lyons

11/14/2023
Many every day movements using every day surroundings can become exercise that can profoundly impact your dog's performance, quality of life, and longevity. Bobbie Lyons, CCFT, KPA CTP, Cert CF, describes just how easy it can be. However, we need to first observe what our dog is doing repetitively - the patterns of posture and movement that may not be ideal and contribute to injury - and then know what to do to address these issues. Contrary to popular belief, increasing your pet's confidence, building their strength, enhancing their balance, and probably most importantly, cluing them into where their feet are, especially those hind feet, can take as little as 15 minutes 3 times per week. So no excuses, let's do this!!! Find Bobbie Lyons at Pawsitive Performance and Bobbie Lyons Canine Campus. Support the Show. Disclaimer Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Pig "Tales" from Care to Quirks! with Susan Armstrong-Magidson

10/31/2023
Did you know that a pet pig has the intelligence of a 3-year old child, can be easily litter-box trained, is affectionate and craves companionship, and that the pig's primary senses are smell and taste? These are merely some of the fun facts that Susan Armstrong-Magidson of Ross Mill Farm and Pig Placement Network shares with us from over 33 years of experience raising and caring for pet pigs. The very same qualities that make a pig endearing can also lead to challenges resulting in many pigs being surrendered. They are not agile and should not be required to negotiate stairs. They are prey animals that frighten easily. They are difficult to transport, find proper veterinary care for and victims of zoning. So do your homework before getting a pet pig and if/when you are ready, remember to adopt, not shop. The pigs need you! As Susan Armstong-Magidson says, "Pigs are not like dogs. Pigs are not like cats. Pigs are just like pigs!!!" For more information about pet pigs, the Pig Placement Network, or to contact Susan, go to PigPlacementNetwork.org Support the Show.
