Changing the Role of Teachers

5/22/2024
Ben Lusk Ed.S Former Curriculum Director Social Media: @lusk_ben https://www.linkedin.com/in/benlusk Focus: Developing curriculum to help students with their mental health, how to positively impact mental health in the classroom. What can we do differently to impact mental health through curriculum. Key Takeaway: The pandemic only sped up the idea that traditional education needs to change. Also, student relationships with technology are not healthy and tend to be a one way affair. Teachers are burnt out and teacher candidates are few and far between. What if there was a way to make real change; to shift the focus of learning from teachers to students, to give them the skills that they really need throughout school and when they graduate, and what if we could refocus student use of technology and shift it from consumer to creator? _________________________ Thriving Educator Podcast HOST: Charle Peck, M.Ed., MSW EMAIL: charle@thrivingeducator.org *NEW BOOK* coming…Get on the Pre-Sale List: CLICK HERE Website PL Options Courses Schedule a Call Purchase Her Book Hire Charle to equip your teachers with mental health tools that easily integrate into their daily practice at your next professional development day. How to Neutralize a Bully

5/15/2024
Jaime Hamilton Email: hamilton@thecommexperts.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_communication_expert/ Communication is the magic with which all relationships are created and destroyed. Professor Hamilton’s passion is to teach people how to communicate in ways that enhance the areas of life that matter the most. Because all human behavior has communicative value, we can conclude that communication is a fundamental skill that is widely underestimated. It is in every fiber of our humanity. Without it, we would not exist. Jaime has garnered an academic platform of excellence while teaching in Higher Education for over 20 years. “I thrive on teaching communication skills that people can apply in real-world contexts.” It is her dream to connect the world of academia with everyday human behavior so that we can understand the world around us in more meaningful ways. Her teaching techniques combined with her real-life experiences allow her to shine a light on new and innovative ways to communicate. She believes that relationships are the core of our human nature. “I want to share what I know so that we can cultivate relationships that help us achieve our full potential.” She founded The Comm Experts, a communication consulting and coaching company, with the hope of teaching effective communication skills beyond the walls of Higher Education. Her education includes a B.S. and M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Central Missouri with continued research education from the University of South Wales, UK. Her education foundation is rooted in Rhetorical Theory and Applied Communication. She can be reached at hamilton@thecommexperts.com Bullying is about control. The theoretical approach we use helps us understand controlling messages within relationships. We expand this approach to bullying relationships as a way to respond effectively to domineering (controlling) messages. All power is found within messages (verbal and nonverbal). Because we know the messages bullies use to garner power over another, we can create messages that help victims of bullying to defend themselves or neutralize the situation. https://www.thecommexperts.com/, Empower your child from bullying with our bullying awareness handbook for parents: Know Bullying, a comprehensive guide covering expert strategies with the goal of fostering more resilient children. From recognizing age-specific signs and effective school communication, this book offers invaluable insights for parents at every stage of their child’s development. Family + Educator Together Teams (FETs)

Ari Gerzon-Kessler EMAIL: arigerzon@gmail.com Ari spent two decades implementing SEL best practices as a teacher and principal, and led retreats for educators as well on SEL. He applies much of that to coaching teachers and school leaders on how to build stronger partnerships with underrepresented families and integrate those practices into gatherings with families, which include conversations around ways to support students and families mental health. He also spent 16 years working as a teacher and school leader... 7 years coaching educators at 30 plus schools... extensive expertise on SEL, with several articles published specifically around mental health as it connects to creating safer schools and preventing violence. A decade plus on the board of Passageworks Institute, which for 22 years focused on supporting the mental health of students, families and educators! One of the major ways he supports the mental health of all stakeholders within a school community is by creating spaces where people can show up authentically and feel deeply seen, heard, and valued. Guest: Anika Smith Website: phoenixsoaringcounseling.com Email: anikasmith@phoenixsoaringcounseling.com The narrative of transitioning from a traumatic past to owning a private practice serves as a tangible success story. This journey offers hope and optimism, encouraging listeners to believe in the potential for positive change, growth, and success, even after enduring significant challenges. Growing up with extreme trauma and enduring relentless bullying in school marked the darkest chapters of my early years. The weight of those experiences cast a long shadow on my mental health, leaving me grappling with the profound impact well into adulthood. In the depths of despair, I found solace in coping mechanisms that, though imperfect, became lifelines during my darkest moments. Seeking help was a transformative decision, and the support I received from friends, family, and professionals guided me towards a path of healing and personal growth. Today, as the proud owner of a private practice, my journey fuels a passionate advocacy for improving school mental health, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive despite the challenges they may face. The narrative of transitioning from a traumatic past to owning a private practice serves as a tangible success story. This journey offers hope and optimism, encouraging listeners to believe in the potential for positive change, growth, and success, even after enduring significant challenges. The key takeaway for educators and school leaders is that every student's journey is unique, and acknowledging the prevalence of trauma and bullying is crucial. By fostering a culture of compassion and understanding, educators can create a safe space where students feel empowered to seek help. My personal narrative underscores the transformative impact of supportive environments and the potential for resilience and growth in the face of adversity. School leaders play a pivotal role in championing mental health initiatives, ensuring that resources and support systems are readily available. Ultimately, the takeaway is a call to action — a collective responsibility to prioritize and invest in the mental well-being of students, creating a foundation for their success and overall thriving.
