The Counterfeit Bond

In a city where love is heavily audited and intimacy is a crime, the ultimate act of rebellion is a counterfeit bond. Maeve Moondance is the undisputed smuggler-bride of Halcyon's undercity. She brokers illegal pair-bond contracts for the desperate, protecting them from the brutal mathematics of the state's Mercy Index. She deals in fake devotion but refuses to love—until a raid tears her empire apart. Captured by Magistrate Galen Grimshaw, an iron-willed enforcer of the upper courts with a tragic past of his own, Maeve expects the execution platforms. Instead, Galen offers a deadly bargain. He needs her black-market expertise to dismantle a human trafficking ring orchestrated by Halcyon's elites. Their mission requires the unthinkable: infiltrating a high-society marriage auction by posing as a deeply devoted, heavily sanctioned couple. As they navigate glittering ballrooms and avoid the watchful eyes of state auditors, the lines between their fabricated romance and true desire begin to dangerously blur. But in a punitive regime where vulnerability is an absolute death sentence, surrendering to the illusion might just cost them their lives.
