Highs In The Seventies

This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. It’s 1975, and Ray Hayward is stuck… A successful Safeway manager in Southern California, Ray has spent decades doing everything right. He’s built a career, raised a family, bought a house on the hill, and settled into the comfortable routines of middle-class American life. But after a frightening bout of pneumonia leaves him confronting his own mortality, Ray finds himself awake night after night, filled with anxiety. Then an old friend introduces him to something completely unexpected: marijuana. What begins as a simple attempt to get a good night’s sleep soon becomes the catalyst for a remarkable personal awakening. As Ray discovers the music of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and the emerging counterculture of the 1970s, he starts questioning long-held assumptions about life, politics, success, and happiness. Alongside his wife Carol, Ray embarks on a journey of self-discovery that neither of them could have imagined. Set against the backdrop of Southern California during one of America’s most transformative decades, Highs In The Seventies is a warm, nostalgic, and often humorous coming-of-age story—except this time the people coming of age are already in their fifties. As promotions, career changes, new friendships, and shifting social values pull Ray and Carol into unfamiliar territory, they discover that reinvention isn’t just for the young. Sometimes the biggest adventures begin after you think your story is already written. Filled with classic rock, suburban nostalgia, road trips, humor, and heartfelt observations about marriage and personal growth, Highs In The Seventies is a celebration of second chances, open minds, and the surprising ways life can still change when you least expect it.
