The First Dissonance

In the pristine city of Aethelburg, perfection is a prison. Tobias Stewart is a Veil Technician, a loyal guardian of the Static Veil—the omnipresent, sub-audible frequency that keeps humanity safe from the chaotic, destructive forces of the Emotional Plague. In a society where the citizens, known as the Composed, live in frictionless harmony, Tobias’s job is to ensure that no dissonant note ever disrupts the peace. But when a localized failure in the Veil causes a woman to experience a catastrophic emotional breakdown in the middle of a crowded plaza, Tobias’s perfectly ordered world begins to crack. Instead of a standard repair, he uncovers a deliberate, systemic cover-up orchestrated by the very Architects he serves. The system isn't perfect; it's hiding its own decay. Driven by a dangerous new curiosity, Tobias descends into the forgotten, decaying under-tunnels of the city. There, he encounters a hidden society of rebels and outcasts who live off the grid, embracing the messy, painful, and beautiful reality of human emotion. Led by the fierce Lyra Lighthaven and the cynical survivor Xeno Kincaid, these "Echoes" show Tobias the horrifying truth behind the city's sterile peace. The First Dissonance is a gripping psychological thriller and dystopian sci-fi journey that asks a terrifying question: What if the cure for humanity's chaos is worse than the disease? As the Enforcers close in, Tobias must decide whether to remain a warden of a beautiful lie, or risk everything to awaken a sleeping world. Duration - 7h. Author - Aaron Raiffie.
