Troublemaker

Evelyn Washington counted 536 names over twenty-three years. She hides them in a Dollar General notebook—names the state reduces to intake forms and biometric scans. The system counts quotas. Mama E counts names. Black Hollow Correctional folds ninety-three federal witnesses into one unit—and staff quietly withhold their medication. The system calls it protocol. Dr. Elena Volkova logs it as data. DeShawn Martinez shares his last insulin dose to survive it. And Mama E writes the names before anyone erases them. Three taps on a tablet. A HOLD light blinking for seventy-two hours. A name in blue ink turning red. For readers of The Nickel Boys and Just Mercy, Troublemaker is a novella of quiet defiance inside a machine that trains itself to forget. Someone has to remember the names. Duration - 27m. Author - Gene Scott. Narrator - Michael Eugene Scott. Published Date - Friday, 30 January 2026.
