What is the difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating?

3/8/2023
In today's episode, Jillian discusses the difference between eating disorders and disordered eating. Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, are formal diagnoses with specific criteria in the DSM-IV. If someone does not have a formal diagnosis, that does not mean their eating disorder is any less valid or real. So what is disordered eating? It may be distorted body image or poor self-esteem, or presence of food rules or skipping meals. If this is sounding a lot like dieting - you are absolutely right. Dieting can be a form of disordered eating. ► To learn more about the differences between eating disorders and disordered eating, head over to our blog at https://changecreateschange.com/disordered-eating-vs-eating-disorders-whats-the-difference/ I'm Jillian Walsh, a Canadian Registered Dietitian and Registered Psychotherapist. The Impact of Eating Disorders on Bone Health in Adolescents/Teens and Later life

3/8/2023
In today’s episode, Jillian talks about the impact of eating disorders on bone health in adolescents/teens. During adolescence and childhood, bone tissues increase and start to develop to help build our bones strong and healthy for the rest of our lives. The tricky situation is that as bone density increases, weight increases, which can flare up eating disorder thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This means that the adolescent phase is crucial in making sure the child has a strong skeleton for them to rely on and use for the duration of their life.
