Transforming Lives Through Music: Empowering our brave young patients

6/16/2023
Thanks to funding from the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association, we have been able to run regular participatory music workshops on our Oncology Unit. Led by professional cellist Georgina Aasgaard, we have seen our children and young people take part in music making, song writing, learning to play a wide range of instruments such as keyboard and ukulele and performing alongside Georgina. Music has also been used to help them de-stress and relax. As a result, we have seen significant improvements to children and young people’s anxiety levels, confidence and resilience, which have helped the whole family when spending long periods of time in hospital. Distraction Technology in Treatment Rooms

3/6/2019
330,000 children and young people are treated at Alder Hey each year but we have just a handful of rooms kitted out with the latest distraction technology allowing us to use an immersive person-centred approach to improve the well-being and comfort of patients. Distraction technology – the use of 4D immersive projection, lighting effects and surround sound - is proven to reduce the use of sedation by 40%, meaning children are not exposed to unnecessary medicine and staff can see and treat more children. Alder Hey Children's Charity thinks hospital staff should be able to use this technology with all of our young patients and so we raise funds to enable this. Listen to Sharon Clarke, Cardiac Physiologist explaining why this technology is so important. Support the show

The benefits of 4D Immersive Distraction Technology in a children's hospital.

12/4/2018
For a child, coming to hospital can be a daunting experience, but the staff at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital ensure they are made to feel welcome and work hard to build friendships with their young patients. Alder Hey Children's Charity is pleased to have raised in excess of £338,000 in 2018 to fit out several of our treatment and consultation rooms with a range of distraction technology - light and film projection, surround sound, noise effects and music and character vinyl wall coverings - which is proven to reduce fear and anxiety in children. The iPad controlled software means patients can be given control of the space to trigger different projections, sounds and lighting. Here Cardiac Physiologist Sharon Clark tells us about the impact it has had on her and her young patients and explains why she wants every department to have this technology. Support the show
