Health & Wellness Podcasts

Hi there! Welcome to Christian Emotional Recovery, a podcast for survivors of childhood trauma, childhood emotional neglect, childhood narcissistic abuse, and any form of trauma. Many of us spend years trying to heal, and don't get anywhere. We don't always target the trauma itself, which is so often what keeps us stuck. The nature of trauma is that it literally becomes lodged in our brains and bodies. Trauma must be targeted where it's at, deep in our bodies and minds. This podcast is where faith meets science. I’m Rachel Leroy, a college professor and trauma survivor. I’m an emotional recovery expert with twenty years of experience applying healing modalities that helped me start making progress after nothing else worked. I'll show you how to do the same. We use traditional methods for drawing close to Christ, but we also use strategies and modalities such as meditation, EFT, and body work. Each week we'll cover a topic that will show you how to heal trauma for good. I'll teach you to access the deeper parts of your mind where the key to healing resides through specific and concrete strategies that will help you get into those deeper places in the mind--the places where you'll find the healing you've always sought and never gotten. God does heal, but not always in the ways we expect. Recovery takes time. This podcast is for people who are serious about healing and are willing to do the hard, difficult work to heal. Healing ain't for the faint-hearted! This groups offers actionable strategies that target the nature and root of trauma and get actual results. Episode 8 Season 5: The Art of Being Gentle With Yourself

9/22/2025
Description In this episode, “The Art of Being Gentle With Yourself,” we explore what it means to practice self-compassion in a world that constantly pushes perfection. Together, we’ll look at the definition of self-compassion, how it connects with gentleness, and why gentleness—as a fruit of the Spirit—is something Christians often overlook when it comes to themselves. We’ll talk about how gentleness can play a powerful role in healing trauma, especially since trauma can feel like the opposite of compassion and softness. I’ll share some personal examples of how I’ve learned to slow down, give myself grace, and be gentler in my own healing journey—physically, mentally, and spiritually. Finally, we’ll consider how practicing gentleness toward ourselves can help us extend true compassion and kindness to others. Episode 6 Season 5: Grace & Grit: The Power of Resilience After Trauma

6/30/2025
Description: In this week’s episode, we’re talking about what resilience really is—especially for those of you who feel like healing is slow, messy, or impossible. If you’ve ever wondered why you still feel stuck, or doubted whether you’re making progress, this conversation is for you. Resilience isn’t about pushing through or being endlessly strong—it’s about slowly coming back to safety, connection, and self after pain. We’ll explore how real resilience works in the body, mind, and spirit, why it doesn’t always look impressive on the outside, and how both grace and grit are part of your healing—and why you’re likely already more resilient than you think. 6/16/2025

In this episode, we explore how generational trauma affects your life, relationships, and faith, and how to start healing it with God’s help. We’ll talk about inherited emotional and spiritual patterns, how trauma lives in the body, and how people in Scripture broke the cycle in their own families. Episode 4 Season 5: You Don’t Have to Earn Your Worth

5/12/2025
Description Do you ever feel like there’s a specific area of your life where you struggle no matter what you do? I spent years doing all the “right” things—vision boards, affirmations, money mindset work, deep dives into my blocks, all in hopes of becoming someone who deserved abundance. But no matter how hard I worked, nothing changed the way I hoped. The promises of the law of attraction and prosperity gospel started to feel like gaslighting—like if it wasn’t working, it must be my fault. I internalized it as failure, as proof that I was broken or cursed when it came to money. And it wasn’t just the inner work—I worked hard in external ways too. I built skills, pursued opportunities, worked on professional growth, and still found myself hitting the same walls. It left me questioning my worth and wondering if success was only for people who already felt whole. But I’m learning that healing isn’t a prerequisite for success or for being seen, respected, or loved. We don’t have to be perfectly aligned or “fixed” to deserve a breakthrough. We can be in process and still be enough. We can be messy and still make progress. Our worth isn’t something we have to earn—it’s something we carry with us, something God has already give us, even when nothing’s working out the way we hoped. Episode 3 Season 5: Celebrating Progress, Not Perfection

4/28/2025
Description: If you’re feeling tired from trying to hold everything together perfectly — you’re not alone. In today’s episode, we’re having a real, honest conversation about what it looks like to choose progress over perfection. We’ll be looking at it through three lenses: first, how perfectionism shows up for just about everyone when we tie our worth to our performance; second, how it runs even deeper for trauma survivors, where perfection sometimes became a way to stay safe or avoid harm; and third, how even in our Christian walk, perfectionism can quietly slip in and make us feel like we have to earn God’s love — when the truth is, His love has never depended on our performance. Each of these journeys is different, but if you see yourself in any of them, know this: you are already loved, already enough, and you are not alone in this fight. Today, we’re giving ourselves permission to grow at our own pace, trust God's grace, and celebrate every small, brave step we take. Breakdown of Episode 1:17 Intro 3:27 General Perfectionism and Guarding Against Perfectionism 21:55 Perfectionism as Christians and Pitfalls to Avoid 39:55 Perfectionism as Trauma Survivors and Pitfalls to Avoid 62:00 Practices to Overcome Perfectionism SEE RESOURCES HERE Christian Emotional Recovery Resources Podcast Website Access Episodes, Get Free Resources, and More Facebook Group Join Community, Get Support, and Get Weekly Encouragement YouTube Channel Subscribe for Exclusive Material Not on Podcast Christian Emotional Recovery Store Get meditations, infographics, journals, and other resources for your healing journey Trauma Survivors Check out Resources Page for Trauma Survivors Email List Get updates on episodes, platform, resources, and products Free Resource Free Visual A.C.O.R.N Resource to Heal Difficult Emotions Donate Monthly Through Patreon Help More Trauma Survivors Through This Ministry ...

Episode 2 Season 5: Restoring Identity: Remembering Who You Are in Christ, Not in Trauma

3/31/2025
When you’ve experienced trauma, it can be hard to separate who you are from what you’ve been through. The way trauma affects the brain can leave you with deep-seated beliefs that you are unworthy, broken, or beyond healing—but that isn’t the truth. You can feel like you're always reactive, angry, and afraid. In this episode, we explore how trauma distorts self-perception and how both psychology and faith offer pathways to reclaiming your identity. We’ll talk about how the brain forms false narratives around trauma, why healing requires both renewing the mind and restoring the nervous system, and how Scripture speaks directly to our worth and purpose. You’ll also get practical exercises—like journaling through a new lens, reframing painful memories with God’s presence, and using breath prayers to calm anxiety. If you’ve ever wrestled with feeling unseen, unworthy, or stuck in old patterns, this episode offers tangible steps to help you reconnect with who you truly are in Christ and in your intrinsic worth. Episode 1 Season 5: Harmful Statements Trauma-Uninformed People Say & What to Tell Yourself Instead

3/17/2025
Description: In this first episode of the season, we’re tackling the impact of words—how well-meaning but uninformed people and abusers use language to dismiss, shame, or control survivors. These statements can keep you stuck in self-doubt and isolation, making it harder to trust yourself and your healing process. We’ll break down common phrases that invalidate and gaslight, then reframe them with trauma-informed alternatives that affirm your experiences and support your growth. We break this down into two categories, phrases that well-meaning people who are not trauma-informed say and phrases that abusers use intentionally to cause harm. This episode is about recognizing the harm in these messages, rewriting the narrative, and choosing words that empower instead of diminish. Let’s start this season by standing in truth and reclaiming the language of healing so we can live the lives God intended for us. 11/25/2024
Description: In this episode, we explore why the holiday season can be uniquely challenging for many, particularly those coping with grief, strained family dynamics, loneliness, trauma, financial stress, or mental health struggles. For many, the holidays are a time of joy, family, and the celebration of the birth of our savior. For others, the holidays can be more complicated. We discuss practical strategies to protect your emotional well-being, such as setting boundaries, managing expectations, creating space for rest and joy, and finding meaningful ways to connect with others. We also discuss how you can help others who may be going through similar challenges. Remember it's okay if you're feeling a lot of emotions during the holidays. Episode 16 Season 4: Embodying Authentic Joy After Trauma

11/11/2024
Description: It can be easy to get caught up in what happened to us, in difficulties, and in the healing work so much, that forget why we're doing this healing work, to experience more joy! The following saying resonated with me and inspired this podcast: "You're not healing to be able to handle trauma. You're used to trauma. You're healing to be able to handle joy." Joy is one of the fruits of the spirit and a fruit of our healing labors. God wants us to not only experience joy, but to embody it. We cover why joy is so important in trauma recovery, how to avoid toxic positivity and bypassing when cultivating joy, and how to cultivate more joy in your life with the realities and unique challenges of being a trauma survivor in mind. As a survivor, it can be more challenging to experience joy, but like the rest of healing work, it is a skill that can be learned. You CAN live a joyful life, in spite of all that has happened to you. Episode 15 Season 4: Six Types of Self-Care and How They Can Help Your Recovery

10/28/2024
Description: Many of us heard growing up that self-care was "selfish" or "ungodly." However, no one can give from an empty well, and even Jesus escaped the crowds for rest, solitude, and time with God. We all need forms of self-care to heal and restore our bodies, minds, and souls. Healing from trauma requires a holistic approach to self-care, addressing all aspects of our well-being. There are six categories of self-care: physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and practical. Each of these can be approached from a Christian perspective, especially for trauma survivors, to promote healing and growth. For survivors, it’s crucial to approach these categories of self-care with patience and self-compassion. Healing is a gradual process, and integrating these practices into daily life can help rebuild a sense of safety, control, and well-being. Additionally, anchoring these practices in faith can provide a deep sense of purpose and connection throughout the healing journey. Episode 14 Season 4: Types of Narcissists and How to Spot Them

10/14/2024
Description: While it's easy to go down a rabbit hole on the concept of narcissism, it's good to be empowered and educated and protect yourself from narcissistic behaviors in certain others. Please keep in mind that having a certain level of narcissistic traits can be healthy in a balance. However, narcissism exists on a spectrum with some people having higher narcissistic traits, and even some who have full blown NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is in the DSM). We will go over the common categories of narcissists both in clinical and common spaces. We'll discuss how to spot each one, what their behaviors are, how they interact with others, and how you can protect yourself from these different types. Episode 13 Season 4: What Is the Connection Between Mirror Neurons and Childhood Trauma?

9/30/2024
Episode Description Mirror Neurons are one of the main parts of our brain that helps us with learning, cognition, empathy, and relationships. Mirror neurons are what help us respond to and learn from our caretakers as children and learn behavior through imitation, and they are involved in the development of our inner child. Understanding how mirror neurons impact these functions, as well as our childhood development and interactions with others, can help us understand what went wrong if we experienced traumatic events or abuse. Understanding what went wrong, we can also learn strategies to use our mirror neurons to heal our trauma through the body, brain, and neural network at its source. This episode explains these processes and gives you strategies for healing mirror neurons as well as an exercise to heal your inner child. Episode 7 Season 4: Coming out of the F.O.G.

6/24/2024
Episode Description In Coming out of the F.O.G., we discuss the acronym, Fear, Obligation, and Guilt, which creates the acronym F.O.G. Much like the word "fog," emotional manipulators will often use fear, obligation, and guilt to confuse and control people, particularly those who are sensitive, compassionate, empathetic, and may be prone to codependency. This can make sensitive Christians especially vulnerable, since they tend have a strong level of conscientiousness. Manipulators like to use tactics that will make others question themselves and their motives, often using gaslighting to keep the other person off balance. Though we are called by God to help others, it's important we examine our motives. If others are exploiting our good will with guilt to get us to do things, this is not from God. Knowing the strategies that emotional blackmailers use will help you to identify their tactics, respond constructively, protect yourself, and get your life back, so you can live the life God intended you to live. You can be free of these tactics and help others knowing your motives come from genuine love and care for others. Episode 13 Season 2: Ten Ways to Avoid Retraumatizing Yourself When Trying to Heal

9/12/2022
Subscribe to Youtube for exclusive NEW videos and free meditations https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4a5jGXZ0-qzPINAspnLwPw Video Description: Trauma Recovery is tricky work, and it's easy in everyday life and when we're doing healing work with a therapist or on our own to unintentionally retraumatize ourselves through no fault of our own. Knowing what works and doesn't work is vital to trauma recovery. Most people don't understand the nature of trauma recovery, and even many well-meaning experts can cause more harm than good when trying to help you. Often, we don't even know that certain events, healing strategies, or circumstances can retraumatize us. This video discusses ten specific ways we inadvertently become retraumatized and then ten solutions to avoid retraumatizing ourselves when doing healing work. We go into detail about why retraumatization happens in these situations and specific techniques that will help you move forward with healing work, while protecting yourself from further trauma. With the right education and tools, you CAN move forward instead of backward in your recovery journey and achieve Healing That Sticks! Resources: A.C.O.R.N Meditation I've linked the playlist to all four versions here. I mentioned this meditation in 18:30 of the video as one way to begin to see the difference between your initial trauma and layering more trauma, and it will help you with the other nine strategies as well.
