Cancer Gone Wild - Learn All About Metastasis

3/28/2025
Like the seeds of a dandelion drift on the wind and land other places, cancer can spread under the right conditions. How does cancer spread and why does it happen? We tackle these questions in this episode in our series “Everything you always wanted to know about cancer, but didn’t have anyone to ask.” https://bit.ly/440dQKo In This Episode: Simply put, metastasis is when the cancer moves from the original organ to another part of the body. The goal of treating metastatic cancer is to control it by stopping or slowing its growth. Some people can live for years with metastatic cancer that is well-controlled. The treatment depends on the type of primary cancer, where it has spread, previous cancer treatments, and general health. Cancer researchers, at the most basic level, focus their energy on what makes cancer cells start in the first place and what makes it metastasize. We’ve been talking the last few weeks about the basic aspects of cancer and this week we are going to talk about cancer cells going rogue and moving through the body. This is called metastasis, or stage 4 cancer. #cancer #metastaticcancer #metastasis #stage4 #stageIV #stupidcancer #cancersucks #healtheducation #publichealth #everyonedies #everydayisagift #palliativecare #cancerresources #cancereducation Support the show Get show notes and resources at our website: every1dies.org. What is Meant by Cancer Staging? Learn the Language of a Cancer Diagnosis

3/14/2025
Send us a text Cancer staging is very important to guide treatment decisions and eligibility in studies. When an oncologist delivers a diagnosis it will include stage, but what does that mean? After an agonizing period of tests, waits for results, and finally an answer, many people go numb as soon as they hear the word "cancer" and fail to ask for clarification about terminology. Learn what you need to know to be an active participant in your care. Show Notes: https://bit.ly/41q519X In this Episode: What is Cancer Staging? Our focus today is to help you understand the cancer staging system. The stage of disease measures if the cancer has spread, and how far is has spread from where it started. Cancer staging is a way to communicate the extent of cancer in the body so that everyone involved is speaking the same language. Cancer Staging Example: Stomach Cancer Dr. Matzo used stomach cancer as a way to understand staging. Visit our show notes for an image and detailed explanations. Marianne also shared about cancer sub-categories, such as 1a, 2c, etc. This further refines the definition of how far the cancer has spread. Cancer Staging with TNM Categories The Tumor-Node-Metastasis notation is an even more refined way to define the extent of cancer spread. TNM helps to establish the anatomic extent of the disease, and the combination of the 3 factors can define the overall tumor stage. This method allows for simplification, with cancers staged from I-IV, with stage IV being the most severe stage. Related Episodes: S5E45: Why Does Cancer Exist? How to Read a CT Scan Report - Learn the Sections Relevant to Your Diagnosis

2/28/2025
Send us a text Did you download your CT scan report from your portal and are anxiously waiting contact from your doctor to understand what it means? The complex terminology can look pretty scary. How do you find what really matters? We show you how to hone in on the summary section and what those findings mean. https://bit.ly/43fzBFG In this Episode: We continue our series, “Everything you always wanted to know about cancer, but didn’t have anyone to ask” with a conversation about how to make sense out of a CT scan report. Dr. Matzo goes through an example CT for someone with metastatic prostate cancer. She discusses the different sections and highlights the "Impression" section - the sum of all the important findings. Marianne talks about how radiologists document abnormal but not concerning biology; some are things just to keep an eye on. She also shared how often things unrelated to the reason for the scan are serendipitously found and treated, like her personal example of a kidney cancer. Charlie helped highlight how useful it is to download a copy of your reports to share between locations and to facilitate your care. We hope this helps the report feel less threatening and more a tool for you to be involved in your own treatment. Support the show Get show notes and resources at our website: every1dies.org.
