Kirsty Bennett | Short course: being happy during a pandemic

Kirsty’s and her husband’s life was rather tough at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a three-year-old son, a baby and two full-time jobs. One day, Kirsty proposed to go on a hike to break the daily routine, which turned out to be a disaster after her son’s continuing whining and complaining. However, as she realized that that hike had done well to her, and decided to go hiking every weekend, she was able to find some relief from the stressing pandemic life, and eventually to also convince her son that it was worth it. Kirsty Bennett is manager of the MIT Women's League and founder of MITell, a storytelling community group for MIT. Kirsty spent seven years as producer and director for The Moth, and founded The Moth’s College Program, bringing storytelling workshops to college campuses across the US. She has taught storytelling to tech giants, the US Embassy and the Gates Foundation. If you’ve a story to tell, she’s the right person to ask. David Edwards | The failure (r)evolution that twists your life plot

David Edwards began his scientist and inventor career brilliantly, founding companies that produced medical devices to cure different diseases. However, during a trip in South Africa, where he had co-founded a non-profit to supply antibiotics and vaccines, David realized that the short-term benefits granted by his inventions were being overwhelmed by long-term problems that dropped the quality of life. This epiphany led him to change his focus and create revolutionary inventions - as the FEND devices, used to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. David A. Edwards is a scientist, inventor and writer. David's inventions and startups have pioneered a new way of thinking about creativity at the interface of art, science and design. He was Professor of the Practice of Bioengineering at Harvard University from 2001 to 2019. Roz Picard | You must take risks to pursue your dreams

Roz Picard has become an international leader in research after founding the new research brand of Affective Computing, which investigates the link between emotions and artificial intelligence. However, her path to the top has being far from linear, with many obstacles and failures on her way. During this talk, Roz shares three segments of her life and three big failures, which, nevertheless, have been only “mid points” and not destinations. Rosalind Picard is professor at MIT and faculty member since 1991. Her revolutionary research focused on the utility of emotions in artificial intelligence pioneered a new research field, called Affective Computing, and granted her several international awards and recognitions. Roz is also co-founder of Affectiva, providing emotion AI technology, and Empatica, creating sensors to improve health. Zita Martins is an Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal, and co-director of the MIT-Portugal program. In her research in Astrobiology, she looks for bio-signatures in space missions, and investigates the potential contribution of organic compounds present in meteorites and comets to the origin of life on Earth. In this talk she discusses her PhD experience, the pressure to publish results, feeling like she was always behind her peers, the challenges to find and sustain a good work-life balance and how to cope with the unpredictable bad luck of losing her most important research samples during shipping.
