The challenges of wearing wigs when you have sensory issues

7/22/2024
The challenges of wearing wigs when you have sensory issues Meg has autism & ADHD. She is a hairstylist and makes wigs in all colours. She used to have long hair, but after shaving it off in 2018 to support a friend who was having chemotherapy treatment, she found she loved short! It made her realise that having long hair had been very uncomfortable for her, and triggered her sensory issues. She loved the freedom of having short hair but being able to wear wigs and still enjoy long hair. Meg creates amazing rainbow wigs, but also has an extensive knowledge of what makes a wig more comfortable for someone who may be on the spectrum and have sensory issues. She has done a lot of research & trial & error into what works and what doesn't. We discuss the density, fittings, materials, including where the hair is sourced from, and how it is made. Meg has a mission to make wig making more popular and normalised, as well as making the hair space more welcoming for neurodivergent stylists & clients. Supporting hair growth through chemical burns, scarring alopecia and menopause.

6/24/2024
Supporting hair growth through chemical burns, scarring alopecia and menopause. Angela Fields is from Florida. She first experienced issues with her hair when she suffered from chemical burns, following the use of relaxer to straighten her hair. She then began to experience thinning in perimenopause, and discovered that she had a deficiency in Vitamin D. After these issues were resolved, she then developed a scarring condition, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, known as CCCA, and has had to undergo scalp injections and biopsies to help to identify and treat this . Hair health at this point became extremely important to Angela, but, as she has an allergy to fragrances, she found that she was unable to use 96- 98% of haircare on the market that contains fragrance. She decided to make something for herself in her kitchen, but after being laid off from her job in the corporate world she was pushed to take the product range to market. She now works to help & support those with hair health concerns, particularly leading up to the menopause, and has created a supportive community where she offers education and advice. What happens when Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia goes undiagnosed

5/20/2024
What happens when Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia goes undiagnosed Lesley Rutter lives in Newcastle, around 10 years ago, at the age of 40, she began to notice severe hair shedding. The front of her hair began to be itchy, her hair follicles became raised & inflamed, and her hairline began to recede away. She went to the doctor, and he told her it was just stress related,, and it would go away on its own. She returned to various doctors over a period of six years, where she was repeatedly sent away and told that it was just because of stress. She was left undiagnosed, not knowing where to turn or what she could do to treat her condition. She had bouts of severe shedding, including loss of eyebrows and lashes, which means her eyes are constantly itchy. Eventually, a nurse noticed that her confidence was being severely affected, and that this was having an impact on her life, and encouraged her to advocate for herself and demand to be referred for treatment. This led to her being sent to a dermatologist, who finally diagnosed her with FFA. By this time, however, she had lost around two inches of her hairline, and was shocked to discover that this would not be reversible. She now has a treatment plan, and has made connections with others, who can understand what she is going through, which she says has made a huge difference. The facts about scalp cooling

4/29/2024
The facts about scalp cooling Claire Paxman, the brand ambassador & Director of global education for Paxman scalp cooling, the global leader in scalp cooling. Claire shares how it was her Mum having breast cancer in the 90's that first made her aware of scalp cooling, when she tried the cold cap. Her Mum went on to lose her battle with cancer at just 44. Her Grandfather invented the first ice bank cooler for beer, and they began to use their knowledge of cooling systems to develop a better scalp cooling system which is a medical device. Vasoconstriction can have a great effect on how much hair is lost during chemotherapy treatment, and also how fast it will grow back. Claire shares how knowledge & education around the use of the cold cap is vital, and is working hard to ensure that the correct information is given and available to hospitals and patients.
