The Healing Power of Therapy Animals

On this episode of Newly Erupted, host Dr Joel Berg is joined by Ellie Wetzel to discuss the integration of therapy animals into dental practices, highlighting the legal considerations and benefits of establishing in-office therapy animal programs. Wetzel emphasizes the importance of choosing the right animal, understanding the differences between service and emotional support animals, and the role of the Association of Animal-Assisted Intervention Professionals in supporting professionals interested in bringing this service into their practices. Guest Bio: Ellie Wetzel and her dog Winnie serve as a therapy animal team, visiting with clients ranging from families at a children’s hospital, teenagers at a juvenile detention center, children in foster care, and students at colleges. In her professional life, Wetzel is an attorney. Through her involvement as a volunteer therapy animal handler with Pet Partners, she developed an interest in animal accommodation law. She has led continuing education sessions for attorneys on legal issues related to service animals and emotional support animals, as well as presentations for professionals on incorporating therapy animals into their practice. Communicating as an Advocate for Children’s Oral Health

Dr. Brianna Muñoz joins host Dr. Joel Berg for a discussion on her path into pediatric dentistry – her lifelong career goal – and the pivotal role an interest in public health played in developing her ethos. In this episode, Dr. Muñoz shares how merging many of her unique interests, including biology, chemistry, and dance, along with a commitment to interprofessional care shaped her as a communicator and advocate for children. She also discusses her experiences as an AAPD Harris Fellow and Board President of the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative, and how they allowed her opportunities to positively impact the optimal oral health of all kids. Guest Bio: Dr. Brianna Muñoz is a board-certified pediatric dentist practicing in Avon, Conn. She recently started her own business, Twinkle Tooth Pediatric Dentistry, and was recognized nationally by the ADA as a recipient of the 2024 10 Under 10 Award. Dr. Muñoz obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree in 2016 from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine at which time she was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) National Dental Honor Society. Dr. Muñoz then completed a residency in pediatric dentistry at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) while concurrently attaining her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree along with a Certificate of Interdisciplinary Disability Studies. She received the 2018 AAPD Resident Recognition Award and was proud to complete the Samuel D. Harris Research and Policy Fellowship. As the AAPD Public Policy Advocate (PPA) for the state of Connecticut, Dr. Muñoz travels to Washington, DC each year where she lobbies at the federal level to strengthen oral health policy and trains residents on a wide array of legislative issues. Dr. Muñoz also serves as Board President of the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative (COHI), a nonprofit organization that promotes access, quality, and equity of oral healthcare at the state level. In honor of these achievements, she was presented with the 2020 COHI Oral Health Champion Award as well as the 2023 Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) Rising Star Award. Although 1 in every 37 children experiences pediatric feeding disorder (PFD), it’s a little-talked about diagnosis. PFD relates to any impaired oral intake that is not age appropriate. Pediatric dentists may find themselves as the first medical provider contact for children and families managing PFD. Very special guest Dena Berg walks us through the four domains that factor into the broad PFD diagnosis and how providers can collaborate with the larger care team. Fuks was born in Curitiba, Brazil, and graduated in Dentistry by the Federal University of the State of Parana. She completed her post-graduate course in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama, USA. and did her residency at the Children’s Hospital of the same University. She returned to Brazil, where she practiced and taught Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Parana until 1973 when she immigrated to Israel and joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reaching the degree of Professor. Upon her retirement she received the grade of Professor Emeritus, that she maintains until the present date. Concomitantly to teaching and clinical practice Prof. Fuks dedicated herself to clinical and laboratory research. Being fluent in several languages, she has lectured in several countries worldwide. Dr. Fuks was President of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry and is an honorary member of several Pediatric Dental Associations. She has published over 160 articles and 85 abstracts in many international journals, wrote 18 chapters in Pediatric Dentistry books, and continues serving actively as a member of the Editorial Board of several dental journals. Dr. Fuks has received several international prizes in research. In 2013 she received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and in 2015 became an Honorary Member of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (IAPD). Dr. Fuks worked par-time in clinical Pediatric Dentistry till 2017, when she completed 80. She continued clinical teaching at the Post-Graduate Clinic of the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine until 2020 when, with the eruption of COVID, and being considered “high-risk”, she stopped clinical instruction. Presently she participates as mentor at the post graduate students’ seminars at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem. Also, in 2020Dr. Fuks made her first presentation onlinegiving a complete course for the Russian Society of Pediatric Dentistry. Since then, she has made several presentations and webinars online. Dr. Fuks is the Principal Editor of the Pediatric Endodontics, the only book specialized in endodontic treatment for primary and young permanent teeth. The book has already been translated into Chinese and the Turkish version is soon appearing in the market. She has now completed the publication of Contemporary Endodontics for Children and Adolescents, launched at the AAPD 2023 Annual Session, where this podcast was recorded. Dr. Jeffrey Rhodes is a 1984 graduate of Austin College in Sherman, TX. He graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1988. Then, he completed specialty training in pediatric dentistry in 1990. He has completed specialty fellowships at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. He considers it an honor to have been trained under Suzi Seale. While at Baylor College of Dentistry, he published research in growth and development of young children’s faces with Francis Miranda and Peter Buschang. He has taught pediatric dental residents for NYU Langone in Springfield, MO and will teach at Oklahoma University Pedo program when it opens this fall. He enjoys lecturing about early orthodontic interventions and personal strategic planning for young dentists. His special interests lie in the growth and development of children’s smiles. He is passionate about ensuring that children receive education on how to have healthy, beautiful smiles for life. Ramos-Gomez, (DDS, MS, MPH) is the Chair of the Division of Preventive and Restorative Oral Health Sciences at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He is also Professor of Pediatric Dentistry, Executive Director for the UCLA Center for Children’s Oral Health (UCCOH), and Director of the Community Access, Reach, & Education in Pediatric Dentistry (CARE-PD) Program.
