Listen to Dr. Anna Fuks, a leader in our profession, talks about her new book on pulp therapy for children. In this great podcast, Dr. Fuks discusses her amazing journey and career in pediatric dentistry, the history of pulp therapy for children, past to present, and why there was a need for the new textbook. Dr. Fuks describes the differing perspectives in Europe. She also talks about MTA use and how we need to grow it. She discusses the teaching FMC and FS treatments as well as describing her takes on the exciting future ahead in pediatric dentistry. Bio: Prof. Anna B. Fuks was born in Curitiba, Brazil, and graduated in Dentistry by the Federal University of the State of Parana. She completed her post-graduate course in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama, USA. and did her residency at the Children’s Hospital of the same University. She returned to Brazil, where she practiced and taught Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Parana until 1973 when she immigrated to Israel and joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reaching the degree of Professor. Upon her retirement she received the grade of Professor Emeritus, that she maintains until the present date. Concomitantly to teaching and clinical practice Prof. Fuks dedicated herself to clinical and laboratory research. Being fluent in several languages, she has lectured in several countries worldwide. Dr. Fuks was President of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry and is an honorary member of several Pediatric Dental Associations. She has published over 160 articles and 85 abstracts in many international journals, wrote 18 chapters in Pediatric Dentistry books, and continues serving actively as a member of the Editorial Board of several dental journals. Dr. Fuks has received several international prizes in research. In 2013 she received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and in 2015 became an Honorary Member of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (IAPD). Dr. Fuks worked par-time in clinical Pediatric Dentistry till 2017, when she completed 80. She continued clinical teaching at the Post-Graduate Clinic of the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine until 2020 when, with the eruption of COVID, and being considered “high-risk”, she stopped clinical instruction. Presently she participates as mentor at the post graduate students’ seminars at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem. Also, in 2020Dr. Fuks made her first presentation onlinegiving a complete course for the Russian Society of Pediatric Dentistry. Since then, she has made several presentations and webinars online. Dr. Fuks is the Principal Editor of the Pediatric Endodontics, the only book specialized in endodontic treatment for primary and young permanent teeth. The book has already been translated into Chinese and the Turkish version is soon appearing in the market. She has now completed the publication of Contemporary Endodontics for Children and Adolescents, launched at the AAPD 2023 Annual Session, where this podcast was recorded. Dr. Jeffrey Rhodes is a 1984 graduate of Austin College in Sherman, TX. He graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1988. Then, he completed specialty training in pediatric dentistry in 1990. He has completed specialty fellowships at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. He considers it an honor to have been trained under Suzi Seale. While at Baylor College of Dentistry, he published research in growth and development of young children’s faces with Francis Miranda and Peter Buschang. He has taught pediatric dental residents for NYU Langone in Springfield, MO and will teach at Oklahoma University Pedo program when it opens this fall. He enjoys lecturing about early orthodontic interventions and personal strategic planning for young dentists. His special interests lie in the growth and development of children’s smiles. Health Literacy and How it Means Everything Regarding (Oral) Health Improvement

During the pandemic, we all learned how little the typical consumer/patient/parent knows regarding oral health, and particularly regarding oral health improvement. Yet, there is a large body of literature on the topic of “health literacy” and its impact on general health improvement. Everything You Need to Know about the Foster Care System and Its Connections to Oral Health

Youth with a history of foster care report more oral health problems and less access to oral health care than their peers with no history of foster care. Dentists should recognize the oral health concerns of these youth in the context of their special health care needs and be prepared to render appropriate care. Future studies should explore barriers to oral health care among this vulnerable population. Youth in foster care have self-identified oral health care needs that should be assessed by dental professionals. Dr. Kristi Linsenmayer tells the story of her journey from practice general dentistry at the Seattle Indian Health Board for 10 years, after deciding to become a pediatric dentist. She also simultaneously trained to receive an MPH degree, sewing together academic training with the years of experience in her passionate area of interest. Kristi tells us how she built a practice first in the hospital, then in an outpatient setting, all organically for many years. Be inspired by listening to Dr. Linsenmayer and her amazing journey. Bio: Dr. Linsenmayer is a board-certified pediatric dentist. She has practiced dentistry for almost 30 years. Raised in the Pacific Northwest she earned both a BS degree in Molecular Biology and a DDS degree from the University of Washington. After practicing dentistry as a general dentist for a decade at the Seattle Indian Health Board, an Urban American Indian/ Alaska Native (AI/AN) clinic, she returned to the University of Washington and completed training in Pediatric Dentistry. She and her husband Tim are also the founders of Kids Tooth Team Outreach, a 501c3 school-based mobile dental home providing free dental care to underserved children in Texas. She is a proud graduate of VCU’s School of Dentistry (DDS), Denver Health Medical Center (GPR), and the NYU Langone Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry- Alaska Site (Pediatrics). She is honored to have been inducted as a fellow in the American College of Dentists and Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Otto is a passionate advocate for the dental profession and is actively involved in organized dentistry. She is a national American Dental Association Success Program Speaker and travels the country to speak to dental students and new dentists on topics such as Practice Management, The State of the Dental Profession, and Ethics & Professionalism in Dentistry. Additionally, she serves as a board member to the Southwest Society of Pediatric Dentistry and is actively involved in the Capital Area Dental Society. Dr. Otto is a graduate of the ADA’s Institute for Diversity in Leadership program, a former national vice president of the American Student Dental Association, national member of the AGD’s Membership Council and ex-officio member to the ADA’s New Dentist Committee and Council on Membership. Dr. Alex, her husband Tim, and their two fur-babies Rambo (Golden) and Bremer (Bernese) love living in Buda, Texas- the community in which their first practice was established. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, boating on Lake Travis, and retuning to Alaska annually to enjoy the mountains, skiing, camping, and hiking. AAPD President Dr. Jeannie Beauchamp says the Future is Bright for Pediatric Dentistry

Jeannie Beauchamp is a board-certified pediatric dentist who is a private practitioner in Clarksville, Tennessee. She earned her DDS degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. She then completed a two-year pediatric residency also at U.T. in 1993. Dr. Beauchamp is very involved in local, state, and national dental societies. She has been active with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has been on the Board of Trustees as Parliamentarian and as the Southeast District Trustee. She was chair of the Council on Communications and is currently Chair of the Political Action Committee. Presently she serves on the American Dental Association Council of Government Affairs. She was a member of the Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations and ADA’s representative on an Advisory Committee of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Dr. Beauchamp is also active with the Tennessee Dental Association, currently serving as the Past President and Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee. After a brief stint in Seattle, Washington to work in public health dentistry, Dr. Jenna returned to her beloved Tar Heel State to receive her Master of Science degree and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from UNC. Dr. Jenna is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and the North Carolina Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. While in dental school, Dr. Jenna met her husband, Brett. She considers herself very lucky to be able to work with amazing patients and alongside an awesome team, but even luckier to be the mom to three incredible kids, Aaron, Abigail, and Caroline. You will be captivated! Dr. Lauren Feldman is a Clinical Assistant Professor, Postdoctoral Director for the Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry, and Director of Pediatric Interprofessional Education at New York University College of Dentistry. She is the recipient of a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) K02 grant for public health studies and research of and coordination of interprofessional education and practice at NYU. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and serves as a consultant and grants reviewer for the AAPD. Her research interests are in the integration of social work and dentistry, HPV Vaccination Anticipatory Guidance, Sugar Sweetened Beverage Policies, MIH, and molar substitution. She completed her B.A. in psychology at Barnard College, doctoral training at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and post-doctoral training at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is currently completing her MPH part-time at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She maintains an active private practice in NYC.
