Save My Thyroid

Health & Wellness Podcasts

If you have hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, etc.) or Hashimoto's thyroiditis and are looking to do everything to save your thyroid gland, then the Save My Thyroid podcast is for you! Dr. Eric Osansky DC, IFMCP is the host, as he personally was diagnosed with Graves' disease in 2008 and was able to get into remission taking a natural approach. He created this podcast to help others with hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's save their thyroid and regain their health. If you have hyperthyroidism then pretty much all of the episodes will benefit you, and if you have Hashimoto's you'll benefit from most of the guest expert episodes, as well as some of the "solo" episodes. The reason there is more of a focus on hyperthyroidism is because all of the other thyroid-related podcasts focus mostly on hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's, and since Dr. Eric personally dealt with Graves' disease he wanted this podcast to focus more on hyperthyroidism, although it will still offer plenty of value to those with hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's. Dr. Eric Osansky lives in Matthews NC with his wife, 2 daughters, 3 cats, 2 dogs, and 3 guinea pigs! He has been a practitioner for 20+ years, and has focused on helping people with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions since 2009.

7/25/2024
There are many factors to consider when choosing a natural healthcare practitioner. From their specialization to their credentials and years in practice, there’s a lot to navigate as a patient or client. A practitioner’s experience can significantly affect your health outcome, but the quality of that experience matters. Today, I’m sharing the key factors to consider when evaluating practitioners, weighing the pros and cons, and finding the right provider for you. In this episode, you’ll learn about: - Why time in practice isn’t a good marker on its own - Recognizing that healthcare is an evolving field where it’s crucial to stay up-to-date - The value and drawbacks of extensive experience with specific conditions - Putting credentials into context when selecting a practitioner - The benefits of working with a practitioner who has personal experience with your condition - Key factors to consider when choosing a practitioner As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! Alternative Breast Cancer Screening and Treatment Options with Dr. Jenn Simmons

7/23/2024
“There is no survival advantage to screening with mammograms.” - Dr. Jenn Simmons For over 50 years, healthcare providers have told women how important it is to have a mammogram every year after a certain age. With mammograms positioned as the primary screening tool for breast cancer, these annual visits are dutifully maintained for years in the hope that they will act as an early warning system. Unfortunately, the data doesn’t support this theory. Research shows that there was no survival advantage to screening with mammograms, nor does it result in more breasts saved. In addition, repeated radiation exposure causes thousands of breast cancers every year, as well as thousands of women treated for breast cancer that never needed to be treated. Luckily, we now have alternatives that are safer and less aggressive. Today, I’m excited to chat with Dr. Jenn Simmons, who is on a mission to change the impact of breast cancer. Dr. Jenn started her professional career as Philadelphia's first fellowship-trained breast surgeon and spent 17 years as Philadelphia's top breast surgeon. Her own illness led to her discovery of functional medicine, and she became enamored with the concept of creating health rather than killing disease. She left traditional medicine in 2019 and founded Real Health MD to help women along their breast cancer journey truly heal. In this conversation, Dr. Jenn and I discuss her personal experiences with breast cancer, the complexities of its detection and treatment, the root causes of breast cancer, how environmental toxins and lifestyle factors affect cancer development, innovative imaging technology for safer breast cancer screening, why you shouldn’t be afraid of estrogen, and more. Should Thytrophin PMG be taken by those with Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s?

7/18/2024
Thytrophin PMG is a supplement from Standard Process® that contains bovine thyroid PMG™ extract and a proprietary Protomorphogen™ blend. It’s been around for many years, and it's not uncommon for me to encounter patients who have been supplementing with it. In theory, Thytrophin PMG is supposed to act as a decoy for the immune system to attack the supplement instead of the thyroid gland. Today, I’m sharing what you need to know before taking Thytrophin PMG and whether it’s an effective supplement for those with Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s. In this episode, you’ll learn: - How Thytrophin PMG works and what it’s used for - The potential effectiveness and lack of research on the use of Thyrotrophin PMG for Graves' disease and Hashimoto's - What to think about when considering using Thyrotrophin PMG - Recommended dosage and how to take Thyrotrophin PMG As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! Thyroid Nodules, Thyroid Cysts, and Alcohol Ablation with Dr. Brittany Henderson

7/16/2024
Thyroid care is complicated, yet we’re often offered a one-size-fits-all approach by conventional medicine. Thyroid medication is one of the most prescribed medications in the US, so many people could benefit from thyroid care done right. Unfortunately, most providers don’t understand how to diagnose thyroid conditions well, how antibodies affect thyroid symptoms, or how to dose the medication properly. Recognizing this gap, today’s guest, Dr. Brittany Henderson, recognized this gap and felt drawn to help people in this field. Dr. Brittany is a dual board-certified physician in both internal medicine and endocrinology. She is a thyroid expert working to bridge the gap between functional and conventional medical approaches to thyroid care. In this conversation, Dr. Brittany and I discuss her integrative approach to thyroid care, the differences between thyroid nodules and cysts, diagnostic criteria, toxic nodules, subacute thyroiditis, the role of iodine in thyroid health, conventional treatment options, minimally invasive alternatives like alcohol ablation and radiofrequency ablation, and more. How common is low stomach acid in those with thyroid conditions?

7/11/2024
Adequate stomach acid levels are vital for overall health. Stomach acid—released from the parietal cells of the stomach lining—has several essential functions, including protein digestion, nutrient absorption, and helping to keep bacteria in check. Low stomach acid, a condition known as hypochlorhydria, is widespread in those with thyroid conditions. Today, I’m sharing the common causes of low stomach acid, potential issues that can arise, and how to improve stomach acid levels. In this episode, you’ll learn: - The crucial role of stomach acid - Causes of low stomach acid - How to know if you have low stomach acid - Potential consequences of low stomach acid levels - Methods to increase stomach acid levels As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! 7/9/2024
“Most people with endometriosis have several symptoms, not just painful periods.” - Dr. Jessica Drummond Endometriosis is a structural immune disorder that affects around one in ten women. With this condition, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows anywhere in the body outside the uterus. Each case of endometriosis can present differently, and the condition is often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed, with an average delay of diagnosis of around 12 years. Symptoms can start in pre-puberty, first showing up as gut or digestive issues. Later, we often see menstrual pain, bladder pain, and various comorbidities such as mast cell activation syndrome. Today, I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Jessica Drummond to have a comprehensive chat about endometriosis, which can be a very complex condition to treat. Dr. Jessica is the Founder and CEO of The Integrative Women's Health Institute. Can LDN help with thyroid eye disease?

7/4/2024
Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is a prescription medication that helps to modulate the immune system and can help to treat different types of autoimmune conditions. While I don’t recommend it for all my patients, there are situations where it might be a consideration since Graves’ disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and thyroid eye disease are autoimmune thyroid conditions. Today, I’m sharing the situations where LDN may be a relevant option and what you need to know before taking LDN. In this episode, you’ll learn: - The benefits of LDN for thyroid eye disease - Factors to consider when deciding whether to take LDN - Potential side effects and weighing the risks versus benefits of taking LDN - How you can access LDN As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! Leptin and Thyroid Health with Dr. Bindiya Gandhi

7/2/2024
“There’s usually something lifestyle-related that we could improve. We don't always need a prescription or a supplement.” - Dr. Bindiya Gandhi Leptin, also known as the satiety hormone, is produced by our fat cells and is one of the main signals that tell our body whether we need to eat more or less. Balanced leptin levels help us maintain a healthy weight because of its impact on metabolism. Leptin resistance, on the other hand, often shows up as difficulty losing weight despite eating well and moving frequently. Many factors can contribute to leptin resistance, including chronic stress, the standard American diet, medications, environmental toxins, and more. The common element is the impact these stressors have on your gut microbiome, which in turn influences your metabolism. Today, I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Bindiya Gandhi to take a deeper look at leptin and its connection with thyroid health. In this conversation, Dr. Bindiya and I discuss leptin's role in metabolism, what leptin resistance means, factors contributing to leptin resistance, how to test for leptin resistance, the connection between thyroid conditions and leptin resistance, dietary recommendations, the use of supplements, and more. While I can’t get to everyone’s questions every time, I love creating these for you, and I’ll do similar episodes every couple of months. Please share your questions with me by emailing info@naturalendocrinesolutions.com, and I'll include the most relevant ones in upcoming episodes. In this episode, you’ll learn about: Q1: Can you take supplements to help shrink a thyroid goiter? Q2: Can hyperthyroidism progress to hypothyroidism if left untreated or vice versa? Please advise on the foods that could help reduce hyperthyroid symptoms. Q3: Based on your experience and work with patients, roughly how long does it usually take to see significant changes in the antibodies while finding and removing triggers to address the cause of an individual's autoimmunity? Q4: Is it safe to use a multivitamin that contains copper if one has Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism? Q5: Are there specific protocols that can help to restore my strength and vitality when dealing with Hashimoto’s? Q6: In 2019, my husband died, and shortly after, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism. When I was diagnosed, I had symptoms, but for the last two years, I've had weight gain, which is hard to lose, minimal palpitations, and no fatigue. I’m taking methimazole, and my T3 and T4 are within range, but my TSH is less than 0.01. Since I found your videos, I've become serious about finding the root cause of my issues. What do you think might be going on? Q7: Do thyroid nodules cause anxiety and nervousness? I've read that they don't cause any symptoms; is this true? Q8: What blood test do I need to get to see when I can start reducing my medication, carbimazole? Q9: Can you consume oats and oat milk, or does it need to be certified gluten-free oats? Q10: I have hyperthyroidism and cannot find much consistent data on it. I want to treat it with natural supplements and diet. Can you give me information on that? Q11: To date, my issue is benign nodules, no autoimmune, T3 and T4 within the normal range. Is there any way to shrink or improve this issue? Q12: What should I do regarding a diagnosis of subclinical Graves’ or hyperthyroidism and thyroid eye disease? Q13: Is it safe to take electrolytes? They have quite a lot of sodium. Using the Elemental Diet to Heal Your Gut with Dr. Roy and Debbie Steinbock

6/25/2024
“It makes people feel so good psychologically to know that this tool exists.” - Debbie Steinbock The elemental diet is a nutrition plan that delivers essential nutrients in their simplest form through shakes. Its goal is to give the gut a rest period to reduce inflammation and start to repair. While most people don't need to follow an elemental diet to achieve optimal health, it can be quite beneficial for certain gut conditions such as SIBO and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The elemental diet is also particularly helpful for complex undiagnosed gut issues and people who have tried everything but aren’t getting the expected results. Today, I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Roy and Debbie Steinbock, who developed the Elemental Diet Success Plan, to discuss how an elemental diet can benefit those with gut issues. In this conversation, Dr. Roy, Debbie, and I discuss how the elemental diet works, the benefits for conditions like SIBO and IBD, their experience with the elemental diet personally and with hundreds of patients, how the diet should be tailored to each patient, who can benefit most from it, and more. What's the optimal range for vitamin D in those with thyroid autoimmunity?

6/20/2024
Vitamin D deficiency is a common issue worldwide, and most people can benefit from supplementation. That said, there’s some division among practitioners regarding what vitamin D levels patients should aim for. Today, I’m diving into the research to explore what studies show about the safety of vitamin D supplementation at different dosages and periods and whether you should be concerned about developing hypercalcemia. In this episode, you’ll learn about: - Why vitamin D recommendations differ between practitioners - Safety and tolerability of high-dose daily vitamin D3 supplementation - Why I’m hesitant to recommend over 10,000 IU of vitamin D per day on an ongoing basis - Whether you should be concerned about adverse events with long-term vitamin D supplementation - The importance of regular testing of vitamin D and serum calcium levels - The safety profile of vitamin D supplementation at various dosages - The optimal range for Vitamin D levels As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! Applying Nutrivore Principles with Dr. Sarah Ballantyne

6/18/2024
“There’s no line separating good foods and bad foods. All foods lie on a spectrum.” - Dr. Sarah Ballantyne Food is more than energy. From vitamins and minerals to fatty acids and more, nutrients are critical in all the chemical reactions that keep us alive. To keep up with this demand, we must continuously replenish our body’s nutrient stores from our foods. Unfortunately, the nutrient density of our food is on the decline, meaning many of us are not getting all the nutrients we need to be healthy despite having enough food. Without sufficient resources, our body systems are under strain, and we’re at risk for long-term health problems. By better understanding these nutrients and our bodies’ needs, we can make informed choices. That’s why today’s guest, Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, developed Nutrivore, a dietary concept or set of principles focused on getting the nutrients we need from the food we eat. At its core, it’s about developing a sustainable, higher-quality diet that gives us what we need to thrive. In this conversation, Dr. Sarah and I discuss the Nutrivore principles, the concept of nutrient density and why it matters, how the Nutrivore score works, the value of a diverse diet, common misconceptions about certain foods, the roles of macronutrients and micronutrients, balanced eating patterns, sustainable nutrition practices, and more. When following an AIP diet when should you reintroduce foods?

6/13/2024
The main purpose of the AIP diet is to remove common allergens and foods that could negatively affect gut health. As it is a restrictive diet, eventually, the goal is to reintroduce foods. For most people, I recommend following the AIP diet for at least 30 days, but I’m often asked when the right time to start reintroducing foods is. Today, I’m sharing the primary considerations for deciding when to introduce foods that you’ve eliminated while following the AIP diet. In this episode, you’ll learn about: - The purposes of an elimination diet - Common allergens that are excluded from an AIP diet - How long to follow the AIP diet - Addressing concerns about the AIP diet - What order to reintroduce foods As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! Can PTU Cause Permanent Liver Damage?

6/6/2024
Compared to other anti-thyroid medications such as methimazole, propylthiouracil (PTU) is not commonly prescribed by endocrinologists. It’s generally only prescribed in specific cases where the methimazole is contraindicated or not well tolerated. It's not uncommon for PTU to cause elevated liver enzymes, and in rare cases, that can lead to liver damage. Thankfully, this is not something I’ve experienced in my practice, as it’s a rare side effect. Today, I’m sharing what the research shows about PTU's potential negative impact on the liver. In this episode, you’ll learn about: - PTU’s mechanism of action - The most common scenarios where PTU is given - Case studies on the potential connection between taking PTU and liver damage - Recommendations for PTU use and monitoring of liver markers - How PTU can interfere with vitamin K activity As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! Metabolism-Boosting Spices with Nagina Abdullah

6/4/2024
“Losing weight can be fun. When I lost 40 pounds, it was the most exciting moment of my life because I was loving what I was eating every day and seeing my waist shrink.” - Nagina Abdullah Many people associate diets and healthy food with restriction, deprivation, and boredom. Luckily, that doesn’t have to be the case. What we eat should be about more than just nutrition. Food can bring excitement, fun, and pleasure, and there’s no reason why that can’t be the case with healthy dishes. For today’s guest, Nagina Abdullah, this realization was pivotal in her weight loss journey. Nagina Abdullah is a weight-loss coach for women in midlife and founder of the website MasalaBody.com. She teaches women to boost their metabolism by adding and combining metabolism-boosting foods to reduce belly fat and overall weight gain in midlife. Nagina has a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley and has helped over 1,500 midlife women successfully lose weight and create a lifestyle change. In this conversation, Nagina and I discuss how adding metabolism-boosting foods and spices helped her lose 40 pounds, the importance of incorporating adequate protein and vegetables into the diet, the benefits of spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and cayenne pepper, intermittent fasting, the need for personalized dietary choices, and more. Why do my thyroid hormones increase even though my TSI is decreasing?

5/23/2024
Often, we’ll see an increase in thyroid hormones in those with Graves’ disease. This is due to thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI), a type of TSH receptor antibody that binds to the TSH receptors and causes the thyroid gland to release an excessive amount of thyroid hormone. For some people on the healing journey, TSI and thyroid hormone levels decrease simultaneously. However, this isn’t always the case. Today, I’m sharing why you might find thyroid hormone levels increasing despite decreasing TSI. In this episode, you’ll learn about: - Causes of increased thyroid hormone levels in those with Graves' disease - The relationship between TSI and thyroid hormone production - What it can mean when thyroid hormone decreases while TSI increases - Why it’s crucial to find and treat the underlying causes - How elevated TSI levels can trigger a more vigorous immune response - Lab reference ranges for TSI - When to be concerned about fluctuations in thyroid hormones and TSI - How often to test TSI and thyroid hormone levels As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode!
