#mhTV episode 158 - Emma Shiel & Dr Steve Hemingway at #NorQual

3/27/2024
The Northern Mental Health Nursing Qualitative Research Forum meets three times a year to connect Mental Health Nurse researchers interested in, and conducting, qualitative research, methodologies and innovations. If you wish to be added to the mailing list, please contact james.turner@shu.ac.uk. The following session was recorded at their fourth event on Friday 17 November 2023. With thanks to Prof Karen Wright and Dr James Turner for organising the event and the invitation to support with recording the sessions. Title: Back to the Future: How can Enrolled Nurses (Mental Health) experience of education and training inform nurse associate and other apprenticeship programmes Abstract: The return to the two-year programme of Nursing education draws comparisons to the Enrolled Nursing route which was phased out in the 1990s. The reasons for the Enrolled Nurses introduction were very similar to the Nursing Associate - a chronic lack of registered nurses and subsequent care gap in meeting patient need. Thus, looking back to the education and training experiences of Enrolled Nurses who also experienced a two-year apprenticeship programme and work-based learning appears to be timely. Using a historical qualitative methodology has potential to provide insights toward informing the future development of the two-year programme Trainee Nursing Associate route and beyond. The aim of the proposed research study is to explore Enrolled Nurses' experiences of education and training to inform the Nursing Associate and other relevant apprenticeship programmes.

Presentation lead: Dr Leila Sharda Title: A narrative synthesis using the normalisation process theory coding manual for qualitative research as an analytical framework Abstract: Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) is frequently used to inform qualitative research that aims to explain and evaluate processes that shape late-stage translation of innovations in the organisation and delivery of healthcare. A coding manual for qualitative researchers using NPT will facilitate transparent data analysis processes and will also reduce the cognitive and practical burden on researchers.

With thanks to Prof Karen Wright and Dr James Turner for organising the event and the invitation to support with recording the sessions. Title: Achieving PARITY: Co-creating an impact measure for service user and carer involvement in pre-registration nurse education Abstract: Few impact measures are developed in co-production with service users and carers. This study contributes to addressing that gap. The resulting co-created 21-item impact measure, which was tested for structural validity and internal reliability, shows promise and offers something original to the field by embracing a participatory approach to all stages of the research process. These early test results should be treated with a measure of caution; the methodological limitations of testing at just one university and with a limited age range of students are acknowledged. Future research will be required to strengthen internal consistency and address these limitations, and to establish the stability of the measure, before it can be claimed to meaningfully measure any changes resulting from service user and carer involvement in the curriculum.

#mhTV episode 146 - A (NMC revalidation) reflection on 2023

1/10/2024
Welcome to episode 146 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 13 December 2023] of #mhTV. This week Nicky Lambert and Dave Munday spoke with guest Jane Beach and reflected on #mhTV in 2023. We used the medium of NMC Revalidation to do this as both a refresher for those who have gone through NMC revalidation before and for those newly qualified colleagues who have yet to go through the process for the first time. JB - During a 32-year career in the NHS, Jane worked in locations throughout the UK as a nurse and midwife. She subsequently qualified as a health visitor, a role she enjoyed for over 16 years working in Birmingham. Participation in a research project concerned with using the Edinburgh Post Natal Depression Scale in practice motivated Jane to undertake a degree in health sciences. Her positive experience of academia encouraged her to continue onto to obtain a Master’s in Public Health, cementing her passion for public health. She moved into smoking cessation, progressing to leadership of the service before securing a role within a PCT public health team, where she was a nurse consultant within the health improvement team. Jane decided to leave the NHS when PCTs were dissolved. She secured a role at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as the health visiting adviser and developed a keen interest in healthcare regulation. In October 2012, Jane joined the Unite Health Sector as the lead professional officer for regulation, a role that enables her to maintain close links with her professional roots. Jane’s work in regulation has included the review of the NMC Code, revalidation and changes to fitness to practise. Healthcare regulation is constantly changing and Jane is kept busy ensuring Unite members are kept up to date with developments and are supported to practice safely and effectively. 12/6/2023
Welcome to episode 144 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 29 November 2023] of #mhTV. This week Nicky Lambert and David Munday spoke with guests Pete Carruthers, Dr Anne Felton & Prof Mick McKeown about Empathy machines - Using theatres to support learning in Mental Health. PC: Pete Carruthers is the founder and artistic director of tree fish productions. He has worked as a writer, director, actor and producer for 15 years, working on a wide range of theatre and film projects. He is also undertaking a PhD at UCLan’s School of Nursing and Midwifery. His thesis title is ‘Empathy Machines: Using theatre and film in the training of compassionate and reflective health professionals.' Pete’s play, ‘The Possibility of Colour’, has been created over 15 years with input from mental health professionals, academics, students and experts by experience. Thanks to funding from UCLan and Health Education England, 1,350 student nurses were given the opportunity to watch the play and take part in post-show discussions during the first touring production of the play in November and December 2022. Attending these events counted as official practice hours towards their nurse training. A national tour is planned for 2025. Pete is now co-developing a one-week theatre and film based simulated practice learning experience for student nurses, with support from NHS England and several universities. Pete has also written, produced and directed award-winning short films that have been used globally to raise awareness and understanding of mental health and neurodiversity. One film, ‘Fallout’ has been used to raise awareness and train staff in 9 different countries across 5 continents and was described by Sir Patrick Stewart as ‘extremely powerful’. AF: Dr Anne Felton is the Head of the Institute of Health and Allied Professions at Nottingham Trent University, UK. Anne is a registered mental health nurse and began her nursing career promoting recovery approaches for people with long term mental health problems in the community. She has extensive experience within healthcare education, promoting student centred approaches to learning and curriculum design. Anne published widely on mental health nursing, risk, therapeutic risk taking alongside simulation and mental health nurse education. She has an interest in student mental well- being alongside the participation of people with lived experience in health education. MM: Mick McKeown is Professor of Democratic Mental Health in the School of Nursing at UCLan. He has consistently supported public engagement initiatives, largely in the field of health and social care. He initiated and developed the Comensus service user and carer involvement project at the University of Central Lancashire and supports public engagement in North West Coastal ARC mental health activities. Mick is a board member of the Preston Cooperative Development Network and active within the Preston Model for community wealth building. Mick has been a keen supporter of The Possibility of Colour for several years and is also the lead supervisor for Pete Carruthers’ PhD study, 'Empathy Machines: Using theatre and film in the training of compassionate and reflective health professionals.'
