On the 4th March 2009, my life changed forever. My Dad, the man I looked up too, the man who in my eyes had 'everything' on paper took his own life. After it happened I struggled to deal with the grief, I buried the pain and found myself asking the question 'why' over and over again. I too then found myself struggling with depression and anxiety. This Podcast is all about documenting not only my own personal journey to discovering more about mental health and suicide, but to also document other stories too. It's time to talk about mental health, it's time to give it the voice it deserves and hopefully this Podcast can provide that. Hopefully this Podcast helps show others that they're not alone... Paul McGregor is an author, lecturer, a mental health advocate, husband, Father of 2 and avid Liverpool supporter. He shares daily content, giving mental health a voice across multiple social platforms and through speaking and workshops across the UK.

2019. The Year of Prevention

1/7/2019
More
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I've spent the last two weeks really disconnected. I've rarely updated this Podcast, social media, and also disconnected from my phone altogether recently on a family trip to Tenerife. Honestly, that disconnect has been so refreshing and something I needed. In this episode, I look back on 2018 and explain why 2019 needs to be the year for prevention. It needs to be the year of change to help with this current mental health crisis. There was a huge amount of talk and and...

The Mental Health Unit Failed My Dad...

12/21/2018
More
Here's an interview I gave back in November for Maytree. I'm hoping this interview offers some value to you in two ways, through my honesty in the interview but also as an introduction into the amazing work that the Maytree do. Since giving this interview I reflected on how my Dad would've probably benefited from something like the Maytree, rather than being sectioned and spending time in a mental health unit on the NHS. If I'm honest, and this isn't true for every unit, the environment...

"Grief With The Volume Turned Up" - Dealing With Suicide

12/17/2018
More
Someone once explained suicide grief as "grief with the volume turned up". It really struck a cord with me, as I really did struggle to accept my Dad's suicide. Grief is hard, knowing that someone you love has gone can lead to a rollercoaster of emotions. As a British society too, we also struggle to talk about grief and people who've died. But suicide? It's almost like we have to be silent about the loss, but also silent about how it happened. I've been open and honest in the past about...

Sofa Sessions #1 (Losing A Parent With Anneli Roberts)

12/12/2018
More
So this was slightly different! I drove to Cardiff to visit fellow mental health campaigner Anneli Roberts of Pigletish.com a few weeks back and we recorded the conversation we had. We sat down on the sofa, hit record on the camera and spoke as openly and honestly as we could about mental health. From losing our parents at a similar age, to how we dealt with the grief, to coping mechanisms and what helps us day to day... this episode really is an honest one. It's funny, even though we were...

How To NATURALLY Deal With Mental Health Issues...

12/3/2018
More
So this is one from the archives on my old Podcast, but I think this could offer huge value to you. I spoke to Dr Phil Carson about natural ways to deal with mental health issues. Why? Because Dr Phil was someone who was a trained doctor who practiced medicine who then transitioned into more natural remedies and saw some amazing results. This episode needs an open ear and an open mind, we're very conditioned to believe the medication is the only way to getting better sometimes. But in this...

What Would I Say To My Dad?

11/27/2018
More
So if I could spend one more hour with my Dad, would what I say to him? This was a question I was asked in a recent interview with Alex Manzi from the Dreamers Disease Podcast and it really got me thinking. To be honest with you, I really wouldn't know what I would say or do. A few weeks ago I published a clip from this interview but I wanted to share the whole interview. I've given a lot of interviews recently but Alex asked some questions that made me dig deeper and share things I've...

Mental Health Stigma Is REAL (Sky News Interview)

11/22/2018
More
Yesterday I went on Sky News again, this time to talk about mental health stigma. I wanted to show you the full interview, but also give you a bit of a back story (behind the scenes) as to what happened when I got the call. Just for the Podcast ;) In this interview with Kay Burley we spoke about mental health in the workplace, stigma, how to get help and why there needs to be more support for people struggling with mental health. Hopefully what I share in this interview helps, and as...

How 1 Video Can Save Someones Life...

11/19/2018
More
This Saturday I got invited to talk to the 'Young Champions' by time to change. Sharing my story, but also sharing how creating videos can help inspire others. This was an amazing opportunity for me, to combine two things I'm hugely passionate about... Mental health awareness and social media marketing. In fact, it came at a time when I've been really thinking about the impact of sharing your story on social media. Over the past 6 months I've had countless messages saying that my videos...

Depression Has No Face... (I Know, I've Been There)

11/15/2018
More
In this episode I share a personal story about how wearing a mask kept my emotions hidden from those around me. I also share about how this mask was the same one my Dad wore, just before he took his own life. This is a personal, quick, but super important episode. And I'm hoping that this shows others that they no longer need to wear a mask too. Depression simply has no face. No matter how we perceive someone through how they act or what they say, we never truly know what they’re going...

The Teenage Mental Health Crisis (BBC News Interview)

11/13/2018
More
A few weeks ago I went in to the BBC studios to talk about the mental health crisis surrounding young people right now. This is something I'm hugely passionate, now as a Dad, I realise just how important it is to focus on the next generation when it comes to mental health. And hearing stories from people daily about how they've lost their children to suicide scares me... In it, I focus on the need for education. Mental health education within schools. I also talk about intervening...

Why Influencers Need To Be Aware of WHAT They're Influencing...

11/7/2018
More
I loved this interview with Olivia from The Blogger Programme, it really was a chance for me to talk about two things I'm extremely passionate about. Digital marketing and mental health... We discuss my story, my early years in business, the recent shift I've made from the fashion industry to mental health awareness and we dive deep into the topic of influencers. From the role they play in mental health stigma, and what influencers should be thinking about to help engage and inspire their...

How To Support Someone With Depression

11/2/2018
More
This is someone you love. Whether it be a sibling, parent, friend or partner... This is someone you’d do anything for but their depression has put extreme strain on the relationship. How many more events can you miss because “they didn’t feel like it”? How many more mornings can you spend with them struggling to get out of bed? You’re surely fed up with the daily self pity, the complaining and the thought of them batting away every positive thing you say? This is someone who at first...

Why Would Someone End Their Life? A Conversation with James Alcott

10/30/2018
More
A few months ago, James Alcott can to meet me in London to interview me for his video series called 'The Process'. Naturally known for his football videos, this conversation was completely different to what James was used to doing but he wanted to find out more about my Dad and how I dealt with his suicide too. I've given a lot of interviews like this recently, but what struck me with this one is how natural the conversation flew. At similar ages, with similar interests, it seemed like the...

Why Chasing Success Made Me Unhappy...

10/26/2018
More
I've never really shared this before... But on a recent Podcast interview with Alex Manzi of the Dreamers Disease, I spoke openly about my previous need for 'status'. A need that was purely driven from depression and my own insecurities. From the outside in I looked happy, I looked successful, but my mind, stress levels and bank balance told a completely different story. I was protecting my identity because I didn't want people to see how I felt inside. 18 months ago, I nearly lost my...

So it's about time I put some context to why I started this Podcast, and also what value you can gain from listening. If you follow me on any other social channel, you'll already know the kind of content I create, but I wanted this Podcast to simply be an extension of that. To allow you to listen to my content, in audio format, whenever you needed too. If you've never heard of me before, I share openly about my whole story in Episode 1 but also touch on it here. I aim to raise awareness...

Standing Up To Suicide on Sky News...

10/19/2018
More
I recently had the honour to head into the Sky studios for an interview with Kay Burley on Sky News. I wanted to play you the interview, alongside giving you a bit of a background into how it happened. In the interview we spoke about the book, but also went into detail about my Dad's depression, his suicide, the way I dealt with it and the stigma that still surrounds mental health. It's only short, about 10 minutes long, but since it went live I've had numerous messages from people stating...

It's Time To Talk... (Opening Up About My Dad's Suicide & My Depression)

10/17/2018
More
A few months ago, I was interviewed by the guys over at 'Life Are We There Yet'. If I'm honest, I didn't expect the interview to go the way it did... but this was probably me at my most honest. We spoke about my Dad's downfall, his suicide, my struggles to deal with it and my battles with depression and anxiety. We also spoke about what I did that helped, alongside what I'm now doing to try and help others. As a first episode for this brand new Podcast, I thought this would be the perfect...
