How Emotions Affect Your Organs

4/24/2024
What goes on in your mind has a profound effect on your body. Thoughts and emotions affect all organs, including the immune, nervous, hormonal, circulatory, and reproductive systems. Emotional wellness is a vital part of your health & total wellness. When our emotions become excessive or repressed for a long time, they negatively impact the energy flow through our meridians. Your Heart and Your Emotions The heart pumps blood to nourish the cells but can get weakened due to anxiety and stress. Anxiety can affect the heart’s normal functioning, raising your blood pressure and white blood cell count and increasing blood sugar through the action of adrenalin. Stress affects circulation, the heart, and the nervous system. In early Western medicine, doctors already believed emotions caused diseases. A powerful mind-body connection through which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect our health. Living with fear often leads to depression and negatively impacts health. Learning to unwind before bed and nourishing a grateful heart with optimistic thinking by writing in a gratitude journal is good for your health. Connecting Emotions and Wellness The connection between emotions and the human body has been a core topic throughout the history of science. Research indicates there are close relationships between emotions and bodily reactions during the formation of mental experiences. Physiological responses, such as cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, skeletomuscular, and autonomic nervous systems, trigger emotional experiences. Now, we understand that direct and instantaneous interactions within the body allow an emotion to be a mental recognition and a feeling within the body. The mind and body are within a unified framework. Different functions and components of the bodily system are related to corresponding categorical emotions. A 2017 research on “Understanding Mind-Body Interaction from the Perspective of East Asian Medicine” analyzed relationships between the visceral system and emotions according to the principles of East Asian medicine. The research concluded the following: -anger was related to the liver, -happiness to the heart, -thoughtfulness to the heart and spleen, -sadness to the heart and lungs, -fear to the kidneys, heart, liver, and gallbladder, -surprise to the heart and gallbladder, and -anxiety to the heart and the lungs. The research also demonstrated that specific patterns existed between the visceral system and corresponding emotions, which suggests that each emotion is primarily associated with a connected body system and corresponds to the principles of East Asian medicine. For example, the DongUiBoGam, the Korean book compiled by the royal physician Heo Jun and was first published in 1613, states the following: “The liver is in charge of anger, the heart is in charge of happiness, the spleen is in charge of thoughtfulness, the lungs are in charge of sadness, and the kidneys are in charge of fear.” Imbalances in emotions can lead to illnesses in their corresponding organs, such as -anger damages the liver, -happiness damages the heart, -thoughts damages the spleen, -anxiety damages the lungs, -fear damages the kidneys, and -surprise damages the gallbladder. The relationship between the mind and the body is horizontal, meaning the heart is significantly prevalent in most emotions. Experts consider the heart as common visceral system that influences emotions. The Korean book states the heart stores the mind, and feelings of sadness, thoughtfulness, and worries all damage the heart, signifying the heart’s role in processing thoughts and emotions. Western medicine and East Asian medicine have different understanding of emotions and their relationship to the body, which leads to distinct interpretations of illness. Western medicine deals with emotional disorders using neural language, and East Asian medicine uses somatic language. Understanding this...

Sugar Cravings

6/4/2021
Nine Steps to Control that Insatiable Sweet Tooth Sugar is a craveable ingredient. Eating sugar releases opioids and dopamine in our bodies. This is the link between added sugar and addictive behavior. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is a key part of the “reward circuit” associated with addictive behavior. It seems like everyone has that evil sweet tooth, and we must control our sugar cravings before they get the best of us. By getting these sugar cravings under control, then we have a better chance to maintain a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Listen to this podcast and watch the video to learn the 9 Tips to Control Sugar Cravings. Here’s nine steps to control your sweet tooth: The first step is awareness of how much sugar you are consuming daily. If you think you are indulging in the white stuff, then try cutting back by 50%. Count how much sugar grams you are taking in daily and remember it should be around 15 to 22 grams of sugar daily. Naturally occurring sugar from whole fruit can be utilized as an energy source as well to appease the sweet tooth instead of grabbing the simple carbohydrates. Reading labels to monitor your daily sugar intake will be crucial to getting it under control. Remember that any ingredient ending in “-ose” is probably derived from sugar. Quench the sugar craving with plain water since a dehydrated body will crave more sweets. Instead of waiting to become dehydrated, you can set an hourly timer to remind yourself to drink a large glass of water. Eat balanced meals with whole foods as opposed to processed foods that may contain hidden sugar ingredients. The key to balancing blood sugar is to eat foods that prevent too much insulin from being released, such as protein and healthy fats. Eating a clean food regime will start the detox and cleansing process and help prevent sugar cravings. Before reaching for a sugary treat, try adding greens to your meals and even bake them for healthy, crunchy and yummy snacks. If you must satisfy that sugar craving, then opt for a healthier alternative with natural sugars from fruits or a small piece of dark chocolate. Magnesium regulates glucose and insulin levels, as well as the neurotransmitter dopamine. A deficiency will cause intense sugar cravings, especially for chocolate. You may have a candida overgrowth that makes you crave more sugar. Taking an organic acid test, where you can check your markers and discover where the imbalances are to correct. Staying mindful of your sugar cravings and going deeper looking into why you think you need or want that sugar can uncover deep-rooted food issues and feelings that may be causing a vicious cycle in your body and mind. Learning how sugar negatively affects our health and contributes to weight gain, obesity, impaired memory, increased risk of heart disease, and diabetes may help you reduce your sugar intake. Always remember that your health is worth the planning, mindfulness, time, and effort to live a healthier lifestyle…all because YOU are worth it! Mold Exposure

4/9/2021
Mold is estimated to cover twenty-five percent of earth’s biomass, with approximately 100,000 fungal species identified. Indoor mold exposure is a health issue. It can negatively affect your overall wellness. Mold is part of the environment that can travel, spread, and grow by releasing mold spores. Mold can impact your health by creating an allergy, toxicity, or infection. Allergies are most common as 70 allergens have been found in spores of mold fungi, causing allergy symptoms and respiratory issues. Mold toxicity can occur because of the production of toxic chemicals from a mold called mycotoxins. This specific type of mold can produce adverse health effects described as chronic effects from the long-term exposure. If you suspect this, then it’s best to get tested for mycotoxins with a functional medicine urine lab test. Mold infections can occur from fungi such as Candida, Histoplasmosis, Cryptococcus, Blastomyces, and Coccidiosis, and these infections can cause gastrointestinal issues, skin infections, and more. Acid Reflux Awareness & Remedies

3/1/2021
According to the American College of Gastroenterology, acid reflux/heartburn affects an estimated 60 million Americans at least once a month and 15 million daily. Acid reflux is a common condition that presents itself with a burning pain, known as heartburn, in the lower chest area. Heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD actually have very different meanings. Acid reflux is a common medical condition that can range in severity from mild to serious. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic, more severe form of acid reflux. Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux and GERD. Most people experience chest discomfort or heartburn after eating or when they lie down or bend over. It results from acid reflux — stomach acid that backs up into the esophagus, which is the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. How do you know if you have heartburn or acid reflux? Heartburn feels like a burning pain in your chest that may be very bothersome or painful. You also may have a bitter or sour taste in your throat or mouth. Heartburn actually is a symptom of acid reflux, or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). GERD is diagnosed when acid reflux occurs more than twice a week. Common causes of acid reflux (and therefore heartburn) include: Drinking alcohol Smoking Obesity Poor posture (slouching) Certain medications (calcium channel blockers, nitrates, antihistamines, certain asthma medicines nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) antidepressants) Certain foods (fatty and fried foods, chocolate, garlic, and onions, Raw onions might also irritate the lining of the esophagus, causing worsened heartburn. caffeinated drinks, acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, spicy foods, mint) Eating large meals Eating too quickly Eating before bedtime Hiatal hernia stomach Pregnancy Diabetes Increase in stomach acid (from stress, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, stomach tumors) Weight gain Here are some helpful tips to alleviate or prevent acid. Avoid eating large meals and avoid eating a few hours before your bedtime.Keep a healthy weight since extra weight can cause pressure inside the abdomen.Eat lean protein and less simple carbohydrates because poor carbohydrate digestion can cause acid reflux.Check if you have bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine as it can cause acid reflux.Avoid alcohol as drinking alcohol can worsen acid reflux symptoms.Avoid coffee as it’s linked to worsening acid reflux and heartburn. Avoid carbonated beverages or citrus juice as they are linked to worsening the condition. Avoid trigger foods that can aggravate symptoms, such as fatty or greasy foods, chocolate, caffeine, mint, spicy foods, citrus, and tomato-based foods. Avoid chocolate and mint as they can worsen the symptoms.Avoid vaping, smoke or are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke. Most of the time, diet and lifestyle changes can help relieve or cure acid reflux symptoms (GERD) and heartburn. Reflect on your lifestyle factors concerning drinking clean water, getting enough sleep, exercising, utilizing stress reduction strategies, meditate, and keep a journal to reach your optimal health. Listen to the podcast and learn DIY strategies for combatting acid reflux. What to do? Food Sensitivity or Histamine Intolerance

12/8/2020
Do you feel off after eating avocados, chocolate, nuts, spinach, legumes? Bloated with an upset stomach, fatigued, or a killer headache but can’t quite pinpoint what the culprit is? It may be your histamine release after eating certain foods. If you have histamine intolerance, then you will feel off when your body has trouble flushing histamine out. It’s super hard to diagnose since it can disguise itself as a food intolerance or seasonal allergy. I always recommend keeping a food journal to determine if there’s a pattern between what you eat and how you feel. Histamine ingested via food is stored in the tissues of the body. And when released, it keeps your organs functioning and body working. Responsible for smoothing muscle tissue of the lungs, uterus, and dilating blood vessels, stimulating gastric acid in the stomach, and accelerating your heart rate. The problem starts when someone isn’t able to metabolize the histamine compound. Feeling bloated, headache, exhausted, anxious, and experiencing GI issues, then you may want to look to reduce or avoid the following foods: aged cheeses, avocados, chickpeas, lentils, strawberries, citrus fruits, chocolate, curry, cinnamon, cashews, walnuts, tomatoes, bananas, eggplant, spinach, yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, processed meats, canned and pickled foods, smoked meats, vinegar, and alcoholic drinks, especially wine, champagne, and beer. Listen to the podcast or watch the video to learn what natural protocol you can use to assist with histamine related issues.
