82. Can Grass-Fed Meat be Healing for You and the Planet? A Conversation with ButcherBox Founder Mike Salguero

7/25/2024
I don't eat five burgers a week (although that sounds dreamy), but I enjoy animal protein daily. Three things are of utmost importance to me: After speaking with ButcherBox founder Mike Salguero, I know that BB checks all of these boxes. ButcherBox visits the farms and fisheries to ensure quality. They know the farmers and fishermen and pay them fairly. They contract with small farms and fisheries to ensure smaller harvests and, thus, sustainability. It's no secret how I feel about ButcherBox, and I got to sit down with Mike, the founder. I'm always interested to understand a person's WHY. WHY did you start that business, or WHY do you feel that way about a topic? His WHY made me a bit emotional. His wife was ill, and they were trying to find grass-fed beef for the recommended anti-inflammatory diet. They couldn't do it, so they bought half a cow! They couldn't eat it all, so they sold the meat to friends, and ButcherBox was born. Mike is a visionary who genuinely wants to make high-quality protein available to everyone, no matter their budget. Give today's podcast a listen! Visit whydidigetcancer.com for full show notes. 79. What I've Learned in 2024

6/6/2024
I always love looking back on what I’ve learned and the first part of 2024 hasn’t disappointed. I’ve had some incredible guests on the show this year and I’ve taken the time to distill some powerful insights from our conversations. Today I want to re-share my top takeaways of the year so far. First up, we have some incredible clips from Dr. Josh Axe, a world-renowned naturopath, leadership author, and speaker. Dr. Axe experienced a debilitating medical accident that left him unable to walk for a year, during which he wrote his book, “Think This, Not That.” The lessons he learned are truly golden, and I’ve picked my top four lessons to share with you, including the power of mindset. Next, we’ll revisit our episode with Liz Curran from the Radical Remission Project. We explored the 10 healing factors common among individuals who achieve radical remissions from diseases like cancer. One fascinating topic was the concept of being “too good of a patient” and the importance of laughter in healing. Did you know kids laugh about 300 times a day, while adults only manage 8-12 laughs daily? It’s a reminder for all of us to embrace our inner child and find joy in everyday moments. The last lesson I want to share came from Kris Carr, an Oprah Super Soul guest, and a 21-year cancer survivor. Kriss lives with 24 inoperable tumors and has learned to love her body, tumors and all. Her journey of self-love and resilience is profoundly moving, especially since I struggled with body acceptance after my own breast surgery. Don’t miss these powerful lessons and heartwarming stories. Hit play now and get ready to be inspired! 78. Can Eating Organ Meats Help Prevent Cancer or Other Diseases? (RE-RELEASE)

5/30/2024
Did you know that eating organs can be good for you? PLEASE KEEP READING! Trust me, I get it. When people mentioned eating organ meat, I had flashbacks to my childhood and my grandma making liver and onions. Believe me when I say it wasn't a positive experience. Humans have eaten organ meats since prehistoric times, and they're rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids – including some that aren't commonly found in plant foods. Today's podcast guest is James Barry, celebrity chef to George Clooney and Barbra Streisand (to namedrop a bit). James knows the power of eating organ meats but he also understands the ICK FACTOR. That's why he created a super yummy way to include organ meats in your daily diet by using salt! He created a savory salt (to me it tastes like a healthy version of Lowery's season salt), and I use it on eggs, salads, and popcorn. Listen to today's podcast to get the inside scoop on WHY organ meats are so important to consume and DID James cook organ meats for George Clooney. James Barry’s 16 + years in the culinary field started as a private chef cooking for celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Mariska Hargitay, George Clooney, Gerard Butler, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Barbra Streisand, and John Cusack. Most recently, James launched his first functional food product, Pluck, an organ-based seasoning. It's the first of its kind and an amazingly easy and delicious way for people to get organ meats into their diet. Follow James Barry on Instagram (@chefjamesbarry), and add more organ meat into your diet with Pluck! It's usually frozen right after being caught, defrosted, processed, and then frozen again. I buy a lot of frozen fish; sometimes, the taste and texture can be inconsistent. Now that I have a better understanding of the processing of the fish before it hits my plate, it makes me wonder about quality. I called a friend who works at ButcherBox and asked her about the process with their salmon. She assured me that BB only freezes the fish ONCE! Which helps preserve the nutrients and taste. 77. The Worm Queen Tells All: Are Worms Or Parasites The Cause Of Your Health Problems?

5/23/2024

These creepy crawlies can hitch into our bodies through contaminated water, food, and less-than-sanitary conditions and wreak havoc. 76. MOLD: Can That Musty Smell Make You Sick? (RE-RELEASE)

5/16/2024
I learned much from today's podcast with mold expert Bridgit Danner. I've never given much thought about mold and the impact it could have on chronic disease or even cancer! When Bridgit explained that chemical warfare is often made from a mold, she got my attention! If mold is strong enough to be used in a bomb, what kind of havoc can it create in my body? Listen to today's episode to learn more about this fascinating topic. Information About Today’s Guest, Bridgit Danner: www.BridgitDanner.com Links to Bridgit's Books: The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Mold Recovery: Take Back Your Home, Health & LifeYour Complete Guide to Health Recovery from Toxic Mold According to Dr. Isaac Eliaz: "You may not be aware of it, but mold is probably affecting your health. So even if it’s not on your mind, “how to detox your body from mold” should be something we all need to be asking. Even if mold is making you sick, you might not know it’s the source of your symptoms. That’s because mold toxicity can act like many other conditions, so it often goes misdiagnosed and untreated. Exposure can cause many different symptoms, including: One of the main reasons mold toxins can cause so many different symptoms is this: These toxins can suppress or damage your immune system. Not only can they bring on symptoms themselves, they can make you more vulnerable to other illnesses. Surrounded by Mold Mold exposure is shockingly common. It’s found in the air, damp or water-damaged buildings, even the food you’re eating. Foods that commonly contain mold include cereal grains, nuts, spices, coffee, bulk foods (like the kind you buy from bins to save money) and dairy products. You come across mold inside and outside, and it can travel around with you. Mold spores can attach to things like: That means it can come home with you from just about anywhere. And if it ends up somewhere even slightly damp, it will grow and multiply. In nature, mold speeds up the break down (decomposition) of things like dead trees and fallen leaves. Some molds are used to make cheese or create antibiotics. But many types of mold can be hazardous to your health. These molds produce mycotoxins, poisons that can cause severe health problems and a wide variety of symptoms. The two most common harmful mycotoxins are aflatoxin and ochratoxin, and exposure to either (or both) of these can trigger substantial health issues — from chronic allergies to cancer. What’s more, if your body can’t remove these toxins on its own, they can slip into long-term storage to cause lasting or recurring damage. Mycotoxins Damage Your Health Mycotoxins are sneaky. While mold itself can’t enter your bloodstream — though it can hang around and colonize in spots like your nostrils and lungs — mycotoxins can get into your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body. These opportunistic toxins can hijack your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections. If your immune system is already compromised (such as people with autoimmune conditions or undergoing cancer treatment), mycotoxins take advantage. If you’re healthy, they can make you very sick. Unfortunately, mold toxicity is frequently misdiagnosed. Because of its wide-ranging effects, it’s typically mistaken for other conditions including depression, multiple sclerosis, or autoimmune conditions. Plus, because mycotoxins are opportunistic, they’re often connected with debilitating diseases such as Lyme disease, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and fibromyalgia." 75. Pressing Pause: Navigating Cancer with Dr. Laura James, Naturopathic Oncologist

5/9/2024
In today’s episode, we are joined by my naturopathic oncologist, Dr. Laura James. As you listen to our discussion, it's essential to acknowledge the whirlwind that accompanies a cancer diagnosis. For many, including myself, the speed at which treatment unfolds can be both a blessing and a challenge. The urgency of medical intervention, coupled with the support of excellent health insurance and the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 era, can lead to a swift entry into what is commonly referred to as the breast cancer industrial complex. But what exactly does this term mean? It's a new concept that encompasses medical advancements, institutional processes, and societal expectations surrounding cancer treatment. While grateful for the prompt attention and care received, there's an underlying need to address the implications of this fast-paced medical industry. For me, and perhaps for many others, navigating the breast cancer industrial complex has raised questions about agency, reflection, and informed decision-making. The speed at which decisions are made can sometimes overshadow the opportunity for thorough consideration, prayer, and seeking second opinions—elements crucial to holistic well-being. Together with Dr. James, we'll explore the importance of empowerment in the face of medical urgency, the role of advocacy in navigating treatment pathways, and the significance of holistic approaches to cancer care. Today, we have a very special guest who just celebrated her 21 year anniversary living and thriving with stage four cancer. Having followed Kris as an Oprah Super Soul 100 member, Kris revealed to me, and countless others, how she gained control of her anxiety after an incurable cancer diagnosis. In this candid conversation, we reflect on Kris's story, as a post-cancer survivor and thriver, and we celebrate her resilience and the recent milestone of her 21st anniversary since her stage four cancer diagnosis. As Kris shares her experience, she paints a picture of gratitude and stability, discusses the quirks of tumor behavior, and being able to find levity in life's most challenging moments. 73. Does Glyphosate Contribute to Cancer? (RE-RELEASE)

4/25/2024
This podcast made me both sad and MAD. I interviewed Glyphosate Girl, Kelly Ryerson about the damage glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) does to our environment and our bodies. Kelly Ryerson has spent years in the trenches explaining to anyone who would listen why this chemical is so dangerous. It’s such an easy default to just use a heavy load of chemicals to kill weeks. Did you know that there are simple alternatives to using such a large amount of chemicals in farming? Kelly also explained to me that while this product is sold in Europe, the company that makes Roundup has created a less toxic alternative for sale in Europe. This to me is mind-blowing! If they can make a less toxic version for Europe that still works, can’t one be made for the US as well? Kelly Ryerson works at the intersection of agriculture and health. She regularly collaborates with farmers, scientists, policymakers, and media to address agrochemical damage to our soil and bodies. She also started the news site Glyphosate Facts, which explains the link between chemical agriculture and the explosion in chronic disease. Kelly has contributed to several documentaries and news publications, co-hosts the morning show on CHDtv, and is a frequent podcast speaker. She is an Ambassador for The Rodale Institute. She has a BA from Dartmouth College, an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and completed training in integrative health coaching at Duke Integrative Medicine. Check out Kelly’s website GlyphosateFacts.com, where she has multiple studies listed. I called a friend who works at ButcherBox and asked her about the process with their salmon. She assured me that BB only freezes the fish ONCE! Which helps preserve the nutrients and taste. The big one for me is texture. When I eat fish, I want a firm texture, not rubbery! After getting over my shock (yes, fooled again by the food corporations) I asked my BB friend if I could pretty-please offer free salmon to my community. She said yes, so if you use the code 'enos', you can get free salmon (2 pounds) free for a year and $20 off of your first box. https://www.butcherbox.com/enos --- Let's talk about a dental company that's making waves - GUM! 72. Is the Air in Your Home Making You Sick? A Surprising Conversation with an Air Quality Expert (RE-RELEASE)

4/18/2024
I admit that after thirty years in this field, I assume that most of my "health decisions" are correct. Yet, whenever I record a podcast, I discover more things I'm doing wrong! GRRRRR…. At this point, I have two options: OR Of course, I'm choosing choice number 2! The small changes I make will eventually create a more significant impact. Fast forward to my conversation today with air quality expert Michael Rubino. Michael shared some recent studies that discovered a link between many cancers and air quality. My first thought was, "Sure, I can understand poor air quality and the link to lung cancer," but no, the study suggested that poor air quality can contribute to breast, pancreatic, and many other types of cancer. What?! The authors explained that pollution can impact our DNA and alter our immune response. This can increase inflammation, which contributes to cancer growth. The authors also suggested that in the case of digestive cancers, pollution can affect gut health and influence cancer development. Okay, now what? How do we make our homes safer without breaking the bank? Michael suggested some easy fixes, such as changing out your HVAC filter more regularly and having a good air purifier in the house. Give today's podcast a listen to learn how to test your home for air pollution and get more of Michael's great tips! Visit Michael’s website TheMichaelRubino.com and take The Dust Test. 71. Uncovering a Cancer Crime Story with Kate Moore, Author of The Radium Girls

4/11/2024
This episode strays away from our usual path of interviews with oncologists and health experts. Today, we’re going into the world of crime and consequence. I'm honored to be joined by Kate Moore, the brilliant mind behind "The Radium Girls." This book, a personal favorite of mine, not only captivated me but also disturbed me to the core. Today's conversation isn't about your typical crime drama. It's about a crime that unfolded silently, hidden within the glow of radium, a substance once celebrated for its luminescent properties. But beneath its shimmering allure lies a dark truth—a truth that Kate's book fearlessly confronts. In an era where crime stories dominate our screens and shelves, we often forget the crimes silently committed against our health and environment. The story of the Radium Girls falls precisely into this category—a tale of betrayal, injustice, and the insidious impact of unchecked industrial practices. Join us as we discuss all of the unsettling details of this cancer crime story. Kate Moore, hailing from the UK, brings her expertise and passion to our conversation, guiding us through this haunting narrative. 70. If Your Mom Had Breast Cancer, Does that Mean You Will, Too? (RE-RELEASE)

4/4/2024
This is a topic I don’t know much about, so I was looking forward to interviewing Cancer Prevention Coach and nurse, Krista. Krista’s focus is on genetic testing because she’s tested positive for a strong breast cancer gene, and she believes it’s the same gene that caused her mother’s breast cancer. Krista answered all these questions and so many more. This is a tough topic, and I’ll be honest a little scary when you think about getting tested to see if you have a higher likelihood of cancer. But Krista is very clear that knowledge is power, and it’s better to understand the risks in your genetics so you can take action to lower your risk. We had an enlightening conversation about stress and its link to cancer. We are both in agreement that organic is best when it comes to produce, but we also understand that it can also be very expensive. We discussed some unique ways to eat organic produce (she suggests eating 8-10 servings per day) without blowing your food budget. Krista, BSN, RN, combines her diverse training in traditional medicine, integrative oncology, and functional nutrition to her work with patients at high risk of cancer due to inherited genetic mutations and/or family history. She is currently finishing her Master’s degree at Arizona state University as part of the first Medical Nutrition program in the country. Her focus is nutrigenomics and personalized cancer prevention. She has training through Harvard Medical School in cancer genomics, precision oncology, and immuno-oncology. Krista truly believes knowledge is power, and considers herself a life-long learner. Her passion for prevention began amidst her mother’s 12+ year battle with breast cancer which was caused by a genetic mutation. Krista, who is also a carrier of this mutation, has since dedicated her career to educating herself about cancer and showing others how to decrease risk as much as possible. She wants others to understand that genetics is just a small piece of the puzzle, and that their DNA is not their destiny. She owns a private nutrition practice in which she works closely with patients to create individualized prevention plans, and offers various courses throughout the year. Her goal is to empower patients with integrative nutrition and lifestyle modifications and teach them how to “fill their plates, and their lives, with purpose.” To learn more about upcoming classes Krista will be offering, you can follow her on Instagram (@cancer.prevention.coach) Visit whydidigetcancer.com for full show notes. --- The Body Deli: Here are my favorite products that are always in my bathroom: Body Deli: Use the code 'ENOS15' at checkout for 15% off! 65. Can Acupuncture Help Prevent Cancer? with Dr. Amanda Tieu (RE-RELEASE)

2/29/2024
Dr. Amanda Tieu states, "Acupuncture has little to no risk and helps with pain, stress, and inflammation." She's seen many success stories, from helping couples with infertility to injured veterans who've tried everything for pain. In the case of Dr. Tieu's Army veteran patient, his Dr. suggested acupuncture as a last-ditch effort to try before getting surgery; spoiler alert, the veteran had so much success with acupuncture and pain management that he skipped the surgery! Dr. Tieu also discussed how acupuncture can inhibit the signals from the brain that are screaming, PAIN! It can block pain signals and turn down inflammation. I've had great success in using acupuncture to manage pain. I broke my leg snow skiing twenty-five years ago and didn't have the resources to get it fixed using surgery (I didn't have good health insurance, owned a business, and couldn't afford to take time off). I used acupuncture for pain management and inflammation. Fast forward to today, and I've trained for and completed five half marathons and surf five days a week. I can tell you that my experience with acupuncture has been nothing but positive! Dr. Tieu received her Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine, Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and License in Massage Therapy at Bastyr University. She is board certified by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She has participated in local nonprofit organizations that sought to provide care to underserved patients, focused on acute injuries and post-recovery treatments of athletes at Bastyr’s Sports Medicine Club, and volunteered as a clinical care member at her local hospital. Dr. Tieu believes in providing quality patient care through an integrative medical approach. She is passionate about bringing sustainable changes to a patient’s overall health. Her current areas of interest are primary care, pain management, and dermatology. 64. What Does Indiana Jones Know About Preventing Cancer? A Conversation with Archaeologist Dr. Bill Schindler (RE-RELEASE)

2/22/2024
Dr. Bill Schindler told me that in 2 decades of research, he’d learned two simple truths: In today's podcast, Dr. S. tells us we should ask ourselves not what we should eat but how; specifically, to look at food in an ancestral way that makes the food we eat as safe and nourishing as it can be for our bodies. Bill has spent his career studying indigenous groups worldwide and now understands that living a full and healthy life means understanding how people prepared their food hundreds of years ago. We had an enlightening discussion about fermented foods, nixtamalizing, organ meats, and farmer's markets. He explained that our digestive tract is very inefficient and "processing our foods," for example, eating sourdough bread can allow our bodies to absorb more nutrients from the food. His website states that our relationship with food does not exist in a vacuum. That is why diets don't work – they are always out of context because they do not consider the other aspects of "life" that are so important to us. How we acquire, process, store, share, and consume food is uniquely human and embedded in practically all aspects of our lives. So learning to eat like humans again is really about learning to live like humans again. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing his book, taking one of his online classes, or following him on social media!
