During the episode about Rasputin, I promised to tell the story of what happened to the Romanovs after the death of Rasputin - this episode makes good on that promise! What would happen next would not be good: Russia’s Prime Minister would step down, and Tsar Nicholas II would be forced to abdicate his throne, and a Provisional Government would be formed. Ultimately, the Romanovs would end up under house arrest at a home that would come to be called ‘The House of Special Purpose’ … this episode gets into all of that, and discusses the mystery of what happened to the youngest Romanov daughter Anastasia. Sally Ride was an American astronaut and physicist. She joined NASA in 1978, and in 1983 became the first American woman and the third woman to fly in space. She was the youngest American astronaut to have flown in space. Sally Ride is also the first astronaut known to have been part of the LGBTQ+ community. The Stonewall Uprising was a series of protests by members of the LGBTQ+ community. These protests were in response to a police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York that started on June 28, 1969. These protests did get violent, but they were the event that led to the rise of the push for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and recognition of those rights. The Stonewall Uprising inspired the Gay Pride movement, and is a big part of why we celebrate Pride Month every June! Carver was one of the most prominent black scientists of the early 20th century. He was a professor at Tuskegee Institute, where he developed techniques to improve soil that had been depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He also wrote a bulletin that contained 105 recipes using peanuts, and spent years developing and promoting many products made from peanuts. Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism, and received numerous honors for his work. Josephine Baker was an American-born French dancer, singer, and actress. She was a flapper synonymous with that era, as well as the first black woman to star in a major motion picture. But she was so much more than that - she was a member of the French Resistance during World War II, and then went on to fought for Civil Rights in America during the 50s and 60s.
