Canada's Charitable History

5/7/2019
The famous Massey Foundation (established in 1896) was the first charitable trust of its kind in Canada. It is often referred to as the first charity in Canada, but it would be a mistake to think this is where charity in Canada started. This week, host Nick Bridges is joined by Know History’s Sara Wilmshurst. With her unique background in fundraising management, Sara is the perfect person to guide us through the history of charity in Canada. How did British common law influence our definition of charity? What effect did World War I have on charities in Canadian culture? What led to our ability to write off charitable donation on our taxes? And, what in the world is The Federation Fundraising Movement? For these answers and more, join Nick and Sara as they notice the history of charity in Canada. Canadian History in Songs

3/12/2019
Canada has a long tradition of history being told through songs. Tunes like The Bridge Came Tumbling Down sought to tell the story of specific events, while songs like The Long Drivers Waltz were meant to convey a feeling of nostalgia. Then you have songs like The Northwest Passage which sought to compare and contrast the past to our present. What role do songs have in teaching history? How accurate can a 3-10 minute song be? How do songs compare to other mediums in preserving our history? Join Robin, Nick, and guest host Nick Johnston as they explore these topics, and debate who is Canada’s most prolific folk hero.
