Bedtime limits and peaceful parenting

5/24/2021
One more storieeeeee! Pleeeeease! How can I say no? I could choose a very short one and be done in no time! Am I mean if I deprive my own child of such a small favour? Alright, let’s give in. He will be quiet after the story… What??? Now a lullaby? That’s it you ungrateful little brat, I am leaving the room! Does it sound familiar? Let me tell you what helps me holding my limits during bedtime. Spoiler alert: it is confidence. Because you can be confident that you can hold a limit about not telling one more story. Because NOT telling a story is, well… really easy. And the best things is: peaceful parenting is just a by-product! A simple trick to make sleep training easier

5/17/2021
Sleep training is one of the most demanding parenting situations. But it is especially important to stay positive and calm around bedtime, because being harsh can stress your children and make it more difficult for them to fall asleep. Today I talk about a study that showed that reducing clutter and chaos in our homes increases our ability to stick to positive parenting, thus it can probably make it easier for us to stay peaceful when setting limits around bedtime too! It was especially interesting for me to learn this as I enrolled in the Parenting Junkie’s year-long parenting course, Present Play, where this month we experienced how reducing clutter and chaos improves the behaviour of our children too. I would say, less chaos = win-win :) You can find the dissertation I was talking about here (Suzanne Marijke Andeweg: Unravelling the effect of household chaos on parenting, 2021): https://scholarlypublications.universiteitleiden.nl/handle/1887/3147171 If you would like to comment on this episode or if you would like to discuss it with me or with other listeners, go to my blog! How to deal with the three most common springtime sleep problems?

5/10/2021
Spring means that the days are longer and that influences our sleep and our children’s sleep. So if you have noticed that new sleep problems started to emerge in your household, you might be able to blame the season! In this episode I will give you my best tips to solve the three most common springtime sleep problem. When I suggested to tape cardboard boxes to the window, I meant cardboard, of course. Why won’t my baby sleep until 10 pm?

5/3/2021
Today I try to help a friend of mine who can’t seem to put her baby to bed earlier than 10 pm. It started just a few weeks ago and she is frustrated to lose her free evenings, and also worried that her baby might not get enough sleep, because he wakes up at the same time as always. How to stop my toddler waking me up in the middle of the night?

3/8/2021
Today I give three tips for Dania to fix her problem: her toddler wakes her up every night, even though she falls asleep independently. "My 3y old wakes in the middle of the night. She falls asleep herself. She wakes us up and we keep telling her if she wakes up to stay in bed and close her eyes. " Well, this did not work. What does then? Night settling vs bedtime settling: what is the difference?

2/23/2021
Today I answer the following question: “Why is night settling different from naps? Got a 5mo who behaves differently settling for day naps and night wakings. He self-settles for nap time and bedtime, doesn’t use a dummy just has a comforter. Night wakings are a different story! Last night he woke every 1.5 hours, usually it’s every 2 hours and won’t be settled by hand on chest, wobbling, dummy or comforter. He only wants to nurse, so I feed him. I’m so aware he doesn’t need that many feeds, but I’m so tired I’ll do anything to go back to sleep!” If you would like to comment on this episode or if you would like to discuss it with me or with other listeners, go to my blog! Sleep crutches and overtiredness

1/18/2021
For this mum, "drowsy but awake” stopped working. When she puts her baby to bed drowsy, but awake, it takes forever for the baby to fall asleep (if at all), which makes him overtired. To avoid this, she puts him in the baby carrier, where he falls asleep easily, but then she is afraid that this will become a sleep crutch. How to make sure baby does not become overtired, without creating new sleep crutches?
