This is episode 6 of season 3 of my podcast. It's getting quite warm in Osaka. Summer is good because it brightens up my mood. Last month two different students of mine came to Osaka on holiday, so I went out to dinner with each of them. We had a lot of fun. 私は最近よくカフェに行きます。私はいままであまりカフェに行きませんでした。時間やお金の無駄だと思っていたからです。しかし家でずっと仕事をしていると、気分転換が難しい時があります。仕事がある日は、気分転換をしたくても、遠くに出かけられません。そんなときにカフェはちょうどいいです。30分カフェにいるだけで、遠くに出かけた気持ちになれるからです。 I often go to cafes these days. I didn’t use to go to cafes very often because I thought it was a waste of time and money. However, when I am working at home all the time, it is sometimes difficult to take a break. On days when I have to work, even if I want to take a break, I can't go that far. A café is just right for such a situation, because even just 30 minutes in a café makes me feel like I have gone far away from home. 私の家の近くにはたくさんカフェがあります。ほとんどのカフェは、自家焙煎をしています。自家とは、他のサービスを使わずに自分たちだけですることです。焙煎とは、コーヒー豆をローストすることです。なので、コーヒーの味がカフェによって違います。大阪は日本で一番カフェが多い県だそうです。東京よりも多いです。大阪では第二次世界大戦より前からコーヒーが人気で、昔からカフェがたくさんあったそうです。 There are many cafes near my house. Most of these cafes do jikabaisen. Jika (home/own-) means that they do it by themselves without using other services. Baisen (roasting) means roasting coffee beans. Therefore, the taste of the coffee differs from cafe to cafe. It is said that Osaka is the Japanese prefecture with the most cafes. It has even more than Tokyo. Thanks again for listening to the podcast. もうすぐ春なので、新しい生徒さんが増えています。春は新しいことを始めたくなる季節ですね。私も現在いろいろなことを計画しています。たとえば、エピソード3でワイヤレスイヤホンを買った話をしました。なので先週、イヤホンをデスクトップパソコンでも使えるようにするために、パソコンに無線LANカードを取り付けました。無線LANカードのWi-FiやBluetoothは思ったより良かったので、キーボードもマウスもワイヤレスにしようと計画しています。そうすればケーブルが少なくなって、机の周りがすっきりします。 It's almost spring and I have more new students. Spring is the season when you want to start something new. I’m currently planning a lot of things myself. For example, in episode 3 I talked about buying wireless earphones. So last week, I installed a wireless LAN card in my computer so that I can use the earphones with my desktop computer. The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the wireless LAN card were better than I expected, so I plan to make the keyboard and mouse wireless as well. That way there will be fewer cables and a cleaner desk area. 計画はもう一つあります。私はよくベッドで本を読みますが、うちにはサイドテーブルがないので、飲み物を置く場所がありません。私は家で運動するので、部屋にサイドテーブルを置きたくありません。インターネットでカップホルダーを探しましたが、なかなかちょうどいいサイズのものがありません。そこで３Dプリンターを使って、ベッドのヘッドボードにつけられるカップホルダーを作ろうと考えています。３Dモデルを自分でモデリングしてデータを送ると、３Dプリントしてくれるサービスがあります。 I have another plan. I often read in bed, but I don't have a side table, so there is nowhere to put my drink. I exercise at home and I don't want a side table in my room. I looked for a cup holder on the internet, but I couldn't find one in the right size. So I'm thinking of using a 3D printer to make a cup holder that I can attach to the headboard of my bed. This is episode 4 of season 3 of my podcast. It is already March, but the weather is still cold. Speaking of which, I have written a new article for the first time in a while. The article is about conjugating adjectives. It is on my website. Please take a look at it if you want to review adjectives. 私は最近、お腹が痛かったです。痛みが何日も続いて、原因がわかりませんでした。最近毎日仕事をしていたので、胃潰瘍になったかもしれないと思いました。胃潰瘍は、胃の病気です。今週レッスンが終わった後、すぐに近所の病院に行きました。お腹が痛いと歩くのが大変です。うちから近所の病院まで歩いて10分ぐらいですが、30分ぐらいに感じました。私は車を持っていないので、こういうときは車を持っている人を羨ましく感じます。 I have had a stomach ache lately. The pain lasted for days and I could not figure out the cause. I thought I might have an ikaiyou because I had been working every day recently. An ikaiyou (a stomach ulcer) is a stomach problem. I went to a local hospital right after I finished my lessons this week. It is hard to walk when your stomach hurts. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from my house to the neighborhood hospital, but it felt like 30 minutes. I don't have a car, so at times like this I envy those who do. 病院で診てもらったところ、「食中毒かもしれない」と言われました。最近、普段買わない魚を自分で料理して食べたので、それが原因かもしれません。私は「胃潰瘍の検査を受けたい」と頼みましたが、「胃がとても腫れているので、今日は胃カメラを使った検査はできない」と断られました。その日は点滴をして、薬をもらって、帰りました。なので、原因がまだわかりません。食中毒なら2、3日で治るはずです。薬を飲んでいるうちに、痛みはよくなりました。 I went to the hospital and was told that it might be food poisoning. Recently I bought a fish that I don’t usually buy. I cooked it by myself and ate it, so that might be the cause. I asked "I want to be tested for an ikaiyou”, but they refused, saying “Your stomach is very swollen and we cannot perform an examination using a gastroscope today”. That day, I was given an IV drip, some medicine, and left. So I still don't know the cause. If it is food poisoning, it should go away in a couple of days. This is episode 3 of season 3 of my podcast. I finally got a new computer. It was from a factory in Shanghai, so it took two weeks from the time I ordered it until it arrived. The new computer is very fast and convenient. I can open many applications at once. It makes it easier for me to do my lessons. 新しいパソコンが届く前に、ワイヤレスイヤホンを買いました。新しいパソコンを買った時にもらったギフトカードを使ったので、払ったのは800円だけでした。私は今まで有線のイヤホンを使っていました。有線とは、コードがあることです。今までは有線のイヤホンのほうが便利だと思っていました。充電も接続も必要ないからです。だけどワイヤレスイヤホンを使ってみると、コードが邪魔だったことに気づきました。とくに運動をするときは、ワイヤレスの方が集中できます。 I bought wireless earbuds before my new computer arrived. I used a gift card I got when I bought my new computer, so all I paid was 800 yen. I had been using yuusen earphones. Yuusen means “with a cord”. I used to think that earphones with a cord were more convenient. Because I don't need to charge or connect them. But when I started using wireless earphones, I realized that the cords were in the way. Especially when I exercise, I can concentrate better with wireless earphones. 新しいイヤホンはカナル型です。カナル型は、イヤーピースがついたイヤホンです。中学生の時はカナル型を使っていましたが、最近はずっとインナーイヤー型を使っていました。インナーイヤー型は、イヤーピースのないイヤホンです。プラスチックの部分を直接耳に入れるイヤホンです。カナル型のイヤホンは周りの音が聞こえにくいので、外で使うのは危ないと思っていました。だけど実際に使ってみると、インナーイヤー型とあまり変わりません。そして、音質がとてもいいです。 The new earphones are canal-type. Canal-type earphones are earphones with earpads (soft objects around the speakers). I used to use the canal-type when I was in junior high school, but recently I had been using the inner-ear type. Inner-ear type earphones are earphones without earpads. It is an earphone that puts the plastic part directly into the ear. I thought it was dangerous to use canal-type earphones outside because it is difficult to hear sounds around you. But when I actually use them, they are not much different from inner-ear type earphones. In Japan, the social standing of freelancers is generally low, but I’ve noticed that if you keep at it, your credit score will go up. It’s all thanks to you, my students and listeners. Rest assured, I’m going to keep providing content for you. 前回はパソコンを買い替える話をしました。今日、新しいパソコンを注文しました。私が注文したのはM1チップのMacBook Airです。M1モデルを選んだ理由は2つあります。一つ目の理由はノッチです。M2モデルには画面にノッチがついています。ノッチとはカメラの周りの黒い部分のことです。私はよくメニューバーの真ん中を使うので、ノッチが邪魔に感じました。二つ目の理由は、今年の3月にM3モデルが発売するという噂があったからです。M3モデルが発売したら、M1モデルはなくなってしまうかもしれません。また3月に私が今使っている2017年製のMacBookのサポートが終了します。サポートが終了したら、売る時の値段が安くなってしまうかもしれません。 Last time I talked about replacing my computer. Today I actually ordered a new computer. I ordered the MacBook Air with the M1 chip. I chose the M1 model for two reasons. The first reason is the notch. The notch is the black area around the camera. I often use the middle of the menu bar, so I found the notch annoying. The second reason is that there was a rumour that the M3 model would be released in March of this year. If the M3 model is released, the M1 model may disappear. In addition, support for my current 2017 MacBook is due to end in March. Once this happens, the resale value might fall. しかし、M1モデルは2020年発売なので、スペックが充分かどうか不安でした。そこでパソコンに詳しい生徒さんたちからアドバイスをもらって、ユニファイドメモリを16GBにアップグレードしました。私は今大学生なので学割が使えるし、キャンペーンのギフトカードがもらえたので、合計で41800円安くなりました。今使っている2017年製のMacBookの下取りを合わせると、あと1万円ぐらい安くなるかもしれません。下取りとは、新しい物を買うときに、同時に古い物を同じ店に売って、割引を受けることです。とてもいい買い物でした。届くのが楽しみです。 However, since the M1 model was released in 2020, I was not sure if the specs would be sufficient. So I took advice from some of my students who know about computers and upgraded the unified memory to 16GB. I am a college student at the moment, so I get a student discount, and I also got a gift card as part of an Apple marketing campaign, so the total discount was 41800 yen. If we add in the Shitadori of my current 2017 MacBook, the price could fall by another 10,000 yen. Shitadori (trade-in) is when you buy something new and at the same time trade in the old product to the same store to get a discount. It was a very good buy. I am looking forward to receiving it. The queue was too long, so I went to a shrine in Kobe on a different day. 最近パソコンの調子が悪いです。今使っているパソコンは2017年に発売したMacBook Airです。このパソコンを使い始めて今年で7年になります。一般的に、MacBookは10年ぐらい使えると言われています。パソコンの動作に問題はありませんが、バッテリーの調子が悪いようです。パソコンから充電ケーブルを外すと、バッテリーの残量がすぐに0%になってしまいます。残量とは、残っている量のことです。電池やエネルギーに使います。さらに、2017年のMacBookのサポートは今年で終了するという噂があります。 Lately, my computer has been acting up. The MacBook Air I'm currently using was released in 2017, so I've been using it for seven years now. Generally, MacBooks are said to be usable for around 10 years. It is convenient because you can use it at your desk or on your bed. (It's a small electronic device that you can rest your feet on.) もう今年も終わりですね。生徒さんの中にも、学校や仕事が終わって冬休みを過ごしている人がたくさんいます。最近、生徒さんとライフワークバランスの話をよくします。私もたまには出かけようと思って、外に出ましたが、今日は気温が2度しかなくてとても寒かったです。梅田の近くのクリスマスマーケットを見に行こうと思いましたが、思わず諦めてしまいました。「思わず」とは、するつもりがなかったのに、してしまうことです。代わりに近所でコーヒーを買って、スーパーで買い物をして帰りました。 It's the end of another year. Many of my students are enjoying their winter holidays after school and work. Recently, I have been talking a lot with my students about work-life balance. Therefore I decided to go out once in a while, but it was very cold today with a temperature of only 2 degrees Celsius (35.6F). I thought about going to see the Christmas market near Umeda, but I omowazu gave up. Omowazu (unintentionally) means that you didn't intend to, but you did. Instead, I bought a coffee in my neighbourhood, did some shopping at a supermarket and went home. スーパーには正月の食材がたくさん並んでいます。カニや、数の子や、干し柿があります。正月はクリスマスの後ですが、日本では正月の方が長い祝日なので、クリスマスの時期から正月の準備を始める家が多いです。クリスマスの食べ物は24日だけ売ってます。12月のスーパーは忙しそうです。正月やクリスマスのための特別な商品を売りますし、正月の間は閉まるので、今はとても混雑しています。私はいつも水を買いますが、運ぶのが重いので少しずつ買わなければなりません。 Supermarkets are full of New Year's foods. There are crabs, herring roe and dried persimmons. New Year's Day is after Christmas, but in Japan New Year's is a longer holiday, so many households start preparing for New Year's from Christmas time. Christmas food is sold only on the 24th; supermarkets are busy in December. They sell special products for New Year and Christmas and they close during the New Year’s holiday, so they are very crowded now. I have finally updated the italki video. I have also updated my lessons a bit. As fewer students were taking the reading class, I created a JLPT class instead. The conversation and grammar classes will continue as before. 今日は回転寿司の話をします。日本ではレストランや、スーパーや、駅など、いろいろなところで寿司が買えます。なので、高い寿司と安い寿司があります。回転寿司は、一般的に、安い寿司が食べられるレストランです。安いので、学生や、子供がいる家族に人気です。一方で、マナーが悪い客が問題になっています。今年の１月、高校生が回転寿司で迷惑なことをして、SNSにアップロードする事件がありました。それから回転寿司のイメージが悪くなってしまい、日本では少し人気がなくなっています。 Today I will talk about kaitenzushi (conveyor belt sushi). In Japan, you can buy sushi at restaurants, supermarkets, train stations and many other places. So there is expensive sushi and cheap sushi. Kaitenzushi is generally a restaurant where you can eat cheap sushi. Because it is inexpensive, it is popular with students and families with children. On the other hand, customers with bad manners have become a problem. In January this year, there was an incident in which a high school student behaved badly at a kaitenzushi restaurant and uploaded it to social networking sites. Since then, the image of kaitenzushi has been tarnished and it has become a little less popular in Japan. だけど、最近の回転寿司はとても便利です。回転寿司のチェーンは、ハイテク化が進んでいます。レストランで順番を待ったり、注文をしたり、お金を払ったりするプロセスを、全てセルフサービスで行える店があります。私は先週、初めて近所の回転寿司に行きました。便利で驚きました。座ったまま何でもできて、私が子供の頃行った回転寿司とは全然違いました。このチェーンでは、仕事を全部AIに任せて、完全に無人にする計画があるそうです。「無人」とは、まったく人がいないことです。SFみたいですね。 But these days, kaitenzushi is very convenient. Kaitenzushi chains are becoming increasingly hi-tech. There are places where the whole process of waiting your turn, ordering and paying at a restaurant is self-service. I went to my local kaitenzushi restaurant for the first time last week. I was surprised at how convenient it was. I could do everything while sitting down, it was totally different from the kaitenzushi I went to when I was a child. The chain has plans to make it completely mujin, with AI doing all the work (There are two kanji in mujin. 無(mu) means ‘no’ and 人(jin) means ‘people’). And by 'mujin'(un-manned/un-staffed) I mean no people at all. The objectives and goals of new students have changed a bit, so I want to update the type of lessons I offer. 今日は効果的なテスト勉強についてお話しします。日本語の代表的なテストはJLPTですね。私の生徒さんの中にもJLPTを受験した人がたくさんいますが、レベルにかかわらず全員合格しています。テストを受ける時に一番大事なことは、正しいレベルを選択することです。その次に、テスト勉強の計画です。テストに申し込んだら、テストの日をカレンダーに書いて、テストまでにどれぐらい勉強時間があるか考えます。１年前から勉強を始める人もいれば、３ヶ月前に準備を始める人もいます。 Today I will talk about effective test study. The JLPT is the most well-known and widely-recognised test for the Japanese language. Many of my students have taken the JLPT, and they have all passed, regardless of their level. The most important thing when taking the test is to choose the right level. The second most important thing is to plan your test study. Today in my Japanese lesson, I heard about a famous omu-raisu restaurant from my student. (Omu-raisu is a Japanese dish made from omelette and rice.) I didn't know about it, but she said it is very famous on the internet. It looks very popular and it is very difficult to make a reservation. Today I will talk about food. 私は昆布飴が好きです。昆布飴とは、昆布で作った飴です。黒くて、柔らかい飴です。リコリスに少し似ています。日本では、昆布やわかめなどの海藻をよく食べます。海藻は味噌汁やサラダによく使われますが、実はお菓子にも使われます。日本でお菓子として昆布が食べるようになったのは、江戸時代と言われています。1683年に、最初の昆布のお菓子が作られました。そのあと、1927年に昆布飴が作られました。最初に昆布飴を作ったのは大阪の会社です。 I like konbu ame. Konbu ame is candy made from kelp. It is soft, black candy. It looks a bit like liquorice. In Japan, people often eat seaweed such as kelp and wakame. Seaweed is often used in miso soup and salads, but is actually also used in sweets. It is said that kelp was first eaten as confectionery in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). In 1683 the first kelp confectionery was made. This was followed by konbu ame in 1927. Comparative pedagogy is the study of the differences in education systems and the history of education in different countries. Comparing the education systems of different countries gives a clear picture of the differences between societies. An example is the difference in Gimukyouiku. ‘Gimukyouiku’ (compulsory education) is the period during which children have to go to school. In Japan, there are six years of elementary school and three years of junior high school, nine years in all. In the USA, it ranges from 9 to 13 years, depending on the state. In Japan, all schools use the same textbooks. In the USA, there are no set textbooks. 今日はアメリカの生徒さんと、このことについて話しました。アメリカの中学校の歴史の授業では、国の歴史以外に、州の歴史も勉強するそうです。知りませんでした。日本の中学校では、どこに住んでいても同じ内容の、国の歴史を勉強します。高校でも歴史を勉強しますが、どこの学校も大体同じ内容だと思います。内容が大きく変わるのは大学に入ってからです。大学では専攻に関係する歴史を詳しく勉強します。 I talked about this with an American student today. It was very tasty. 今日は日本語の単語の覚え方について話したいと思います。新しい単語を覚える時、フラッシュカードを作る人が多いです。しかし、フラッシュカードの単語が完全にランダムだと、覚えるのが大変です。どの単語を、どれぐらい、いつまでに覚えればいいか考えてみましょう。私が日本語のレッスンで使う２つのアイデアについて話します。 Today I would like to talk about how to remember Japanese words. When learning new words, many people make flashcards. However, if the words on the flashcards are completely random, it can be hard to remember them. Think about which words you need to learn, how many and by when. I will talk about two ideas I use in my Japanese lessons. １つめは、教科書の単語を覚える方法です。日本語の勉強で教科書を使っている場合は、この方法がいいです。まず、教科書の単語を１０個選んで、フラッシュカードに書いて、覚えます。一週間後、フラッシュカードの日本語だけを見て、その単語を使って、文章を作ってみます。単語の意味を思い出せない時は、辞書じゃなくて、教科書を見ます。教科書の日本語の文章だけを見て、単語の意味を思い出せるかチェックしましょう。 The first method is to learn vocabulary from textbooks. This method is good if you are using textbooks in your Japanese studies. First, choose 10 words from the textbook, write them on flashcards and memorise them. After a week, look at only the Japanese on the flashcards and try to make sentences using the words. If you cannot remember the meaning of a word, look in the textbook, not the dictionary. Look at only the Japanese sentences in the textbook (not the translation) and see if you can remember the meaning of the word. ２つめは、よく使う単語を覚える方法です。日本語のレッスンでよく会話をする場合は、この方法がいいです。まず、レッスンで使った単語を１０個選んで、ノートの同じページに書いて、覚えます。一週間後、単語の意味だけを見て、それを日本語でなんと言うか思い出してみます。思い出せない時は、辞書じゃなくて、ノートを見てみましょう。そして、レッスンの会話の内容を思い出せるかチェックしましょう。 The second method is to learn frequently used words. This method is good if you often speak in Japanese lessons. First, choose 10 words used in the lesson, write them on the same page of your notebook, along with the meanings in your native language, and memorise them. (So that you will see all 10 words on the same page, to remind you of what you talked about in the lesson.) After a week, look at just the meanings of the words and try to remember how to say them in Japanese. If you can't remember, look at the notebook, not the dictionary. The word ‘pants’ in Japanese has two meanings: trousers and underwear. What I am talking about now is the pitch accent for trousers. The accent for underwear is ‘PAntsu’ (descending). ‘PanTSU’ (ascending) means “trousers”, and ‘PAntsu’ (descending) means “underwear”. Most of the clothes that people wear today are from Western culture, so most of them are Katakana in Japanese. In line with this, the materials of clothing are also often expressed in Katakana. For example, 'Men' (cotton) and 'Asa'(linen) are sometimes described as 'Kotton' (cotton) or 'Rinen' (linen). Both mean the same thing. Emmanuel Todd is a French historical demographer born in 1951. I found out about him when I was researching the possibility of World War III. Even if you are not an academic researcher, being knowledgeable about history and society ‘ni koshita koto wa nai’. 'Koshita koto wa nai (is the best)' means 'something is always the best idea'. It is used for verbs, nouns and adjectives. When entering a Muslim mosque, you must not wear usugi. 'Usugi' (light clothing) means not wearing much clothing. For example, summer clothing. Wearing a lot of clothes is called 'atsugi' (heavy clothing). In Japan, more than 60% of people are not religious, so the rules regarding religion are not very strict. When praying at a temple, you bow once, keeping your hands clasped in front of your chest. At shrines, you bow twice, then clap your hands twice and bow again at the end. He said that if you read the same book 100 times, your memory of the book will be deeper (more integrated into your long-term memories). I thought this was an interesting method. I think the most important thing in studying is to keep going. As long as you keep at it, you will never be bad at it. It's like staying healthy as long as you keep exercising. I found out that about 24% of the participants were women. Also, the number of foreign participants seems to be increasing. This year is the ninth marathon, and compared to the first one, the number of foreign participants has increased by about ten times. The largest number of foreigners are from Hong Kong. Hong Kong is the host of the Hong Kong International Marathon. Around 70,000 people take part in this event. It will soon be cherry blossom season and many students are planning a trip to Japan. Last year and the year before, due to the coronavirus, many famous tourist attractions banned people from getting together for cherry blossom viewing. So this year’s cherry blossom viewing may be crowded. Cherry blossoms are also blooming in my neighbourhood park. I talked about this in the 20th episode of season 1, recorded last April. If you have time, please take a listen. 先週私は体調を崩しました。木曜日から目眩と動悸がして、週末にはもっとひどくなりました。日曜日の最初のレッスンが終わった後、すぐに病院に行くことにしました。私がいつも行っている歯医者の近くに、日曜日でも開いている内科の病院がありました。そこでCTI検査をして、原因を調べました。CTI検査では、体の中の写真を撮ります。検査では、胃が３倍ぐらいの大きさに膨らんで、他の内臓を圧迫していることが分かりました。お医者さんは「十二指腸の動きが弱くなっている」と説明してくれました。 Last week I fell ill. I started feeling dizzy and having palpitations on Thursday and it got worse over the weekend. I decided to go to the hospital immediately after my first lesson on Sunday. Near my regular dentist there was a medical hospital that was open on Sundays. There I had a CTI test to find out what was causing the problem; in a CTI test, pictures are taken of the inside of your body. The examination showed that my stomach had swelled to about three times its size and was pressing on my other internal organs. I had another check-up on Monday, after which I went to a bookshop and bought three sociology books. I recently learned the English word Shrinkflation. In Japanese, the same phenomenon is called ‘Suterusu nesage’ (stealth price reduction). ‘Suterusu’ (stealth) is taken from the name of a fighter jet. ‘Suterusu nesage’ means lowering the manufacturing / production cost of a product so that the consumer is unaware of it. At the weekend I did some muscle training with the ankle weights I bought last time. With ankle weights, even a difference of 0.5 kg makes a big difference. I was also thinking of increasing the dumbbells from 3kg to 5kg, but suddenly going heavier might not be a good idea as it puts too much strain on the body. I think I need to increase the weight steadily little by little while continuing regularly, and not exerting myself too much.The process of work and study is similar. 先週は大学の授業でZ世代の話をしました。Z世代とは、1990年代後半から2010年ぐらいまでに生まれた人です。私はその一つ前のミレニアル世代(1980～1995年生まれ)です。Y世代とも呼ばれます。Z世代はデジタル・ネイティブなので、コミュニケーションや情報集めをほとんどオンラインで行います。大学教授にはX世代(1965年～1980年生まれ)以前の人が多いです。X世代のコミュニケーションや情報集めの方法は、電話でした。Y世代の私は、インターネットも電話もよく使います。授業では、すべての世代が集まって、考え方の違いについて議論しました。 Last week I talked about Generation Z in my university class. Generation Z are people born between the late 1990s and about 2010. I am a millennial (born between 1980 and 1995), one generation before that, also known as Generation Y. Generation Z are digital natives, so they do most of their communication and information gathering online. Many university professors are Generation X (born 1965-1980) or pre-Generation X; the way Generation X communicated and gathered information was by telephone. As Generation Y, I use both the internet and the telephone a lot. She works in marketing and is conducting a survey of Generation Z. To get Gen Z to cooperate with the survey, I made an advertisement and sent it to two universities in Tokyo, one of which I dropped out of, and the other of which is ‘Fuzokukou’ of the high school I went to. 'Fuzokukou’ (affiliated schools) are different schools run by the same organisation. For example, one organisation runs four schools, from primary school to university. If you go to Fuzokukou, you do not need to take any entrance exams to progress to the next school in the same organisation. Every year in January, the number of Japanese students increases. There are also more new students in my classes. Thank you to all my students, January is the month when many people set new goals and start new habits. 最近外に出ていなかったので、今日は出かけることにしました。出かけるほどの用事がなかったので、オンラインで注文していた商品を、わざわざキャンセルして取りに行くことにしました。「わざわざ」は、しなくてもいいことをするときに使います。いい意味でも悪い意味でも使います。電車に乗って、４つ先の駅の家電量販店に行きました。先月まではそんなに寒くなかったですが、最近急に寒くなりました。今週は雪が降るそうです。先月のうちにコートをクリーニングに出しておいて良かったです。 I hadn't been outside recently, so I decided to go out today. I didn't have any things I needed to do outside, so I decided to Wazawaza cancel the items I had ordered online and pick them up at the store. 'Wazawaza (intentionally)' is used when you do something you don't have to do. It is used in both positive and negative contexts. I took the train to an electronics store four stops away. It wasn't so cold until last month, but it has suddenly become cold recently. It is going to snow this week. I am glad I got my coat dry cleaned last month. 家電量販店でコンタクトレンズを買ったら、1,000円ぐらいのポイントが溜まりました。日本の家電量販店では、よくポイントがもらえます。この店のポイントは買った金額の10%です。たとえば1,000円の買い物をすると、100円のポイントがもらえます。ポイントは同じ店で現金として使うことができます。違う店では使えません。私はこのポイントを使って、筋トレ用のアンクルウェイトを買い換えることにしました。いままで0.5kgのものを使っていましたが、1kgにしました。持って帰る時少し重かったので、改めてオンラインは便利だと思いました。 When I bought contact lenses at an electronics store, I got about 1,000 yen in points. You can often get points at Japanese electronics stores. At this store, the number of points you receive is worth 10% of what you buy. For example, if you buy 1,000 yen, you get 100 yen in points. Points can be used as cash in the same store. They cannot be used in different retailers. I decided to use these points to buy new ankle weights for muscle training.
