Episode 142: Tokyo Xtreme Racer Special

6/9/2025
Start your engines and hit Tokyo's Shuto Expressway with the DreamPod crew in this brand new episode of the DreamPod! Hosts Brian, Harvey, and Mike R are joined by our friend Lemon to dive deep into Genki's cult-classic Dreamcast racing titles Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 — which were released as Tokyo Highway Challenge in Europe. We explore the unique RPG racing mechanics, stunning visuals and banging tunes that continue to make these games stand out in the Dreamcast's library — while also highlighting their role in introducing Western audiences to the world of underground street racing and tuner culture that would later explode in popularity because of games like Need for Speed: Underground and movies like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. We also take a sizeable detour to talk about Speed Devils — which recently had its online functionality restored — as well as Genki’s 2025 modern-gen reboot of Tokyo Xtreme Racer. Episode 141: Mike Arkin, former Executive Producer for Crave Entertainment

5/12/2025
In this episode of the DreamPod, hosts Brian and Lewis are joined by a very special guest: Mike Arkin. With over 30 years of experience in the video game industry, Mike has worked for the likes of Acclaim, Fox Interactive, and Activision. Most notably for us, he served as an executive producer at Crave Entertainment, the publisher behind some of the most unique and unforgettable titles on the Sega Dreamcast. Mike shares a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes stories from his time working on the releases of beloved Dreamcast titles like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, Super Magnetic Neo, Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm, StarLancer, and everyone’s favourite guilty pleasure, Razor Freestyle Scooter. We also take some time to discuss Mike’s current role as co-CEO of the newly reformed Argonaut Games, their new remaster of Croc, and whether we will ever see a re-release of their Dreamcast opus Red Dog. Ten Years of the Dreamcast Junkyard DreamPod

4/19/2025
A decade of DreamPod? Who would've thought? Well, apparently not us, because we completely missed the fact that April the 11th marked ten years since the introductory episode of this very podcast —episode 0— first went live! Thankfully, a kind listener on Twitter gave us a much-needed reminder of this major milestone. To celebrate, Dreamcast Junkyard and DreamPod founder Tom Charnock joins Lewis for a special retrospective episode. They dive into the podcast’s humble beginnings, and reminisce about some of its greatest guests and funniest moments. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has tuned into the DreamPod over the years, and for continuing to keep the Dreamcast dream alive! Episode 140: The Best-Selling Dreamcast Games

4/11/2025
We’ve all seen those lists floating around the internet that count down the greatest Dreamcast games (we’ve even got a few of our own!), but what were the titles that truly captured the attention of Dreamcast owners back in the day? Andrew, Tom, Kev, and Lewis dive into three sets of sales charts —from the UK, North America, and Japan— to find out which Dreamcast games consumers were spending their hard-earned cash on at the turn of the millennium. Also listen past the outro music to enjoy a bloopers reel of what will go down amongst the DreamPod team as one of the most cursed episodes for technical issues. Lewis and Lozz are joined by Ross Kilgariff and Cypress, the organisers of the Dream Disc '24 Dreamcast game jam that took place at the tail end of last year. Also joining is friend of the show and Dream Disc '24 judge, Derek Pascarella. The Dream Disc '24 game jam was created with the aim of uniting the talented developers of the Dreamcast homebrew scene behind the shared challenge of developing new software for the console in a short space of time. Each of the 24 software entries submitted to Dream Disc '24 is unique, with an eclectic mixture of gameplay, graphical styles, and game engines on offer. Episode 137: Hassy Holidays! - Blue Stinger Special (RadioSEGA WinterFest '24)

12/16/2024
The Dreamcast has its very own Holiday classic, and it's called Blue Stinger. Regulars Brian, Harvey and Lewis are joined by friend of the Junkyard Dominic (Dreamcast Enjoyer on YouTube), to talk all about this misunderstood (and absolutely nuts) Dreamcast launch title that features crazy weapons found in vending machines, an acid trip of a Christmas department store, and Dogs Bower. As a gift to our incredible listeners, keep an ear out for a very special appearance by the voice of Eliot Ballard (and original video game voice of Sonic the Hedgehog!) Ryan Drummond. This episode originally premiered on the 15th of December 2024 as part of RadioSEGA's WinterFest 2024, as part of the event's tenth anniversary celebrations. This here is the extended, uncut version. Episode 135: Dreamy or Screamy? (Halloween Special)

10/28/2024
It's Halloween once again, and the DreamPod is coming out in full force with some terrifying takes as they resurrect a beloved format - this is Heaven and Hell, Part 3, complete with a brand new spooky subtitle of "Dreamy or Screamy?" If you haven't heard the first and second Heaven and Hell episodes from 2020, it's a format where our panel each pick a game they consider their idea of Dreamcast heaven, and one they would rather throw into the fiery pits of hell than spend another second playing. This time it's the turn of Harvey (on his debut as host - be nice!), Lozz, Mike R, and special guests Dreamcast Enjoyer and Derek Pascarella to pick their games... Episode 134: 25 Years of the Blue Swirl (a European/PAL Dreamcast Launch Retrospective)

10/13/2024
This episode was as inevitable as a blue Dreamcast case with its hinges broken off. Of course the Junkyard was going to record an episode to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the SEGA Dreamcast's October 14th 1999 launch in PAL regions! Blue swirl for life, mate. In fact, celebrating this occasion was so important that we even managed to convince Junkyard founder Tom Charnock to emerge from his coffin and host the damn thing. Listen in as Tom, James, Andrew and Lewis share their memories of the Dreamcast, and provide a retrospective on the highs and lows (looking at you, Australian launch!) of the Dreamcast's venture into Europe and other PAL regions. There's also one of James' 10-questions quizzes to wrap up the episode... but will Tom, Andrew and Lewis fare better at the quiz than OziSoft did at launching the Dreamcast Down Under? You are now dialled in to a brand new DreamPod special on the Dreamcast's ultimate multiplayer killer app: Phantasy Star Online, or - in Lozz's words - "the greatest f***ing game in the world. Period." Back in 2001, PSO broke new ground by bringing an online RPG experience to console, but did you know that you can still play PSO online on your Dreamcast in 2024? Assembled in The Dreamcast Junkyard lobby this time round are Lozz, Mark (aka MazGamingUK), Brian and Harvey (aka Pizza Hotline) to talk all about what makes Phantasy Star Online's revolutionary console RPG goodness so darn special. They also recount their first memories of the game, think of questions they'd want to ask the game's developers if they had the chance, and take on Lozz's "Who Want to be a Mesetanaire" PSO quiz... Episode 124: Celebrating 25 Years of Dreamcast - A Retrospective

11/26/2023
The Dreamcast Junkyard's "The Top 200 Dreamcast Games... Voted by You! (2023 Edition)" is available now! Check it out now on the website: https://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/p/the-top-200-dreamcast-games-voted-by.html On this day, 25 years ago, the Sega Dreamcast was launched in its home country of Japan - nearly an entire year before it released in the West. It was Sega's follow up to the much misunderstood Saturn, and sadly their last console before moving to being a third-party developer/publisher. In this podcast retrospective, Andrew, Brian, Mark and Mike cover everything to do with the Dreamcast's 28th of November '98 launch, and discuss what it was that made Sega's swansong console so darn special.
