Transmission # 27 ”Increasingly Outrageous Action”

9/22/2023
It’s the American way, ain’t it folks? We always gotta outdo our last go ‘round. Even better, we love to one-up the other guy. This has been going on in action films since the beginning. There’s always an ebb and flow of course, but if you chart the outrageousness of Hollywood action films thru its 100 year history, it’s a steady uphill climb. From Jimmy Cagney shooting up rival gangsters, to Fast and Furious… in friggin’ SPACE!! What in the hell is this world coming to? Well that’s what we’re going to attempt to find out in this latest episode of our beloved little show! Spoiler, I don’t think we figured it out… more confused than when we started, but we had fun regardless. We hope you like it too.

Howdy-ho listeners. It’s time for another monthly entertainment news go ‘round. News is gettin’ slim in the days of the SAG and WGA strikes. But we managed to pump out a full episode regardless. In this one, we’re talking movie release delays. We talk about a couple of upcoming pre-strike films that have people talking. We chat about our histories and admiration with the late great Paul Rueben’s, aka PeeWee Herman. Oh, and we hilariously joke on the film director known as McG. Finally, the little cherry on top of every Hollywood Hullabaloo episode is what have we been watching lately. So we hope you enjoy, cuz we have such fun recording these little shows. Merci beaucoup les auditeurs!!

Transmission #25 ”Film Directors What Ifs?”

4/26/2023
For us movie nerds, the film director is king/queen. They are the ones who set the tone, look, and vibe of our favorite films. Then you hear buzz about your favorite director being attached to an upcoming project, only to find out someone completely different ends up directing the film. Another situation that happens with directors is they plan on a new developing a script, but years go by and said movie is never made. Directors get fired, they pass away, or they jump ship for something “better”. What I’m driving at here, is that in this podcast episode, we go back and forth on some famous directors and talk about their projects that never came to pass. Pondering the question…What-if!? Get it? Got it? Good! Please enjoy.

Transmission #24 ”The ‘Not So’ Golden Age of Hollywood”

3/24/2023
Movies from the ‘40s and ‘50s have this bright and shiny sheen. Dancing, singing, romance, adventure… choreographed swimming(?) But off camera it was a dark and politically divisive time. Sounds familiar huh? Fear of the ‘other’ was rampant. The enforcement of the Hays Code sterilized what movie goers saw on screen. Political and religious influence enforced discrimination and The Hollywood Blacklist was put into affect. In our latest episode we look into this complicated period of filmmaking and discuss some of the modern films that expose the dark areas of the golden age of Hollywood. We also talk about the rise and fall of the Hays Code, and how the MPAA ratings system took its place. Come on along and take a scary stroll down memory lane, and marvel at how history likes to repeat itself.

Transmission #23 ”Films About Tomorrow… Today”

2/24/2023
Remember that ‘80s song that goes “My future is so bright, I gotta wear shades”? That was a dumb song, huh? Well, we have an episode for you that is hopefully not as dumb! It’s all about the future in movies. We thought it would be fun to span the past 100 years of cinema and look at how filmmakers anticipated what the future might be like from the perspective of their time period. So sit back, listen in, and see what the future holds. ******SPOILER WARNING******* In the episode we discuss plot details and in some cases the endings for the following films. Metropolis(1927), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Westworld (1973) and the (2016) TV show, Blade Runner (1982), Ex Machina (2014), Terminator (1984), The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Back to the Future 2 (1989), Mad Max Films (1979 - 2015), and Waterworld (1995)

Transmission #22 ”History in the Making”

11/23/2022
History is malleable they say. Written by the winners of wars, yadda yadda yadda. Well over the last hundred years, historical knowledge has been influenced by filmmakers. Not necessarily a good thing. Screenwriters and directors like to take liberties with historical facts in order to tell a better story. Those liberties have a tendency to seep into the public conscience. We thought it would be fun in this season finale to shine a light on when historical films and period TV shows get history right, but mostly when they get it wrong. ***********SPOILERS************* In case you give a crap about these movies and TV Shows, here’s a list of the ones we will spoiler in this episode. Mindhunters, Zodiac, Alexander the Great, Apollo 13, Rush, Ford vs. Ferrari, The Spanish Princess, The White Queen, The White Princess, The Tudors, Amadeus, Immortal Beloved, The Northman, Vikings, Barry Lyndon, Band of Brothers, and Saving Private Ryan.

Modern horror films, and frankly America’s obsession with Halloween owes it all to these monsters and to Universal Studios. So follow us up that long winding dirt road that leads to that ominous castle on the top of the mountain. What’s a matter? Chicken!?!
