S4E12 - "Jennifer and Johnny's Charity"

4/30/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Giant Lizzard ravages East Coast!! Les is at it again...a classic Nessman mess up. Once Les gets things sorted out with giant reptiles and winter storms, he tells us about a fire at the Vine Street Mission. Turns out, Dr. Fever is a big supporter of the Mission. He was on sight for a live report right after the fire...kinda. The kitchen at the Mission needs a new roof...to the tune of $40,000! For Johnny, and most mere mortals, this is a big pile of cash. For Ms. Jennifer Marlowe, this amount represents the equivalent of loose change in her friend's couch cushions. She invites them over for a night of appetizers, martinis and money. She also invites "the gang." She should have specified WHICH gang. Johnny brings a few friends from the mission. They meet Jennifer's friends and the party really heats up! You can't move the mission! Not even a foot! Especially not up into Price Hill...there's no bums up there! Although the rich folks want to help, they don't understand the intricacies of feeding the perpetually drunk. Johnny and his friends work to set them straight. Eventually, connections are made via exotic dancing and David Niven...or something like that. Grab a big, steaming bowl of Chicken Gumbo and join us for a night of Zombies, cheese puffs and big donations from some of Cincinnati's finest philanthropists. It's gonna be a hoot! WATCH ALONG DETAILS... [Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. S4E11 - "You Can't Go Out of Town Again"

4/23/2024
WELCOME BACK!! It's College Class Reunion Time and Moose...er, Art...is getting ready to head out for the big weekend. He's gotten his Letterman Sweater cleaned and he's making reservations at the "Eat 'n Sleep." Meanwhile, Venus is attempting to 'woo' a young lady from a local broadcast school. She seems a bit smarter than Mr. Flytrap's usual conquests. She's also not thrilled about the lack of privacy in the Venus Lovenest...aka The Control Booth. With Art out of town, Venus sees a chance to regale his young lady friend with crab puffs and gherkins galore. When Art and Carmen get to the "Eat 'n Sleep", not much has changed in 25 years. They meet up with Hank "The Hunk" and his flaky wife Fluffy! The "Eat 'n Sleep" was the scene of Art and Carmen's first date. It's a tale Art loves to tell again and again. Hank reveals a secret Carmen has kept from Art for 25 years. He can't be TOO mad at her...especially when she explains. The night ends with Art and Carmen dancing to a Shout! Factory replacement song...but we'll let you hear the real thing. Two, four, six, eight...who do we appreciate?? Omegas, Omegas, OMEGAS!! Push 'play' to get this little pep rally underway. S4E10 - "The Consultant"

4/16/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Andy's good buddy, Norris Breeze, is in Cincinnati! What brings ol' Norris to town? That would be Mama Carlson. Norris has developed a coke habit so he needed a high paying job. He's now a "radio consultant" tasked with making every radio station sound the same from coast to coast. Norris has already been in town a couple of days, monitoring the Mighty 'KRP. Andy gulps hard and starts the wheels turning. How can he discredit "the Radio Doctor" from New York? Oh, Andy's not as 'aw-shucks' as you might think. He has a trick or two up his sleeve. He can't make them competent...but could he make them different? Andy hatches a plan. It involves the whole staff, but you might not recognize them once Andy's done. As Jennifer gets coffee for "Mr. Breezy" some guy in a good-looking suit is claiming to be Herb. This is the Flimm Building, right? Norris takes copious notes, while watching out for Venus and his knife. He can't wait to report it all back to Mama. When he does, Andy just sits quietly with a little grin on his face. Being from Santa Fe, this might not be Mr. Travis' first rodeo. Norris proceeds to describe a station Mama's never seen. Her son is...overworked? No, this is not the WKRP Mama knows. She realizes with a quiet grin how well she's been played. As Hirsch ushers Andy out, he's asking for even MORE money. Mama realizes this Mr. Travis is not one to be trifled with. Get in on the whole madcap experience!! Push "Play" now...Jennifer will have some coffee to you shortly. We think. WATCH ALONG DETAILS... [Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! S4E09 - "Love, Exciting and New"

4/9/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Remember way back at the start of Season Four when the Phone Cops blew up the transmitter?? (Or, something like that...gotta stop listening to Johnny). Anyway, insurance said they'd replace the transmitter...at its current value. Its old, and usually broken, current value. Andy decides a Top Ten operation like WKRP should be heard on something nicer than Harris' best AM Transmitter from 1968. He decides the best way to get to the checkbook is around Art. Mama Carlson can authorize additional funds. Andy decides to meet with her...at a nice restaurant. Then again at the opera. He's meeting with her in the trendiest places all over town. Les, intrepid newsman that he is, blows the whistle on the whole sordid seeming-affair. Were Andy and Mrs. C. really an "item"? Are you INSANE?? When confronted with her possible indiscretions, Mama can only say it's what you 'do' with Employees. Besides, Andrew has nice hair. Will Andy get his new transmitter? Will Mama make a new life for herself in Los Angeles? Will Art get a chance to visit the Arboretum? These questions and more will be answered in this week's installment: "Love, Exciting and New"!! S4E08 - "Jennifer and the Will"

4/2/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Jennifer is out on the town enjoying a posh meal at an upscale and trendy Cincinnati hotspot. Her companion is...elderly. Let's not kid ourselves...he's old! This is the Colonel. He seems to have held a special spot in Jennifer's life for a while now. Actually, if Steve Marshall and Hugh Wilson had gotten their way, he'd have been MARRIED to Jennifer right now. Dinner doesn't go well. The Colonel expires minutes before paying the whopper of a check. Is Jennifer a conniving gold digger? Or just a young lady in love with an older gentleman? Either way, she's Executrix of the Industrialist's estate. Meeting the family is a treat. Seeing the old man on video in the lawyer's office...even MORE of a treat!! We've got guest stars galore, a new lobby and a seminar from Andy on how NOT to comfort your friends. Before you push 'play' do you promise to be of sound mind?? Ah, who cares... S4E07 - "Three Days of the Condo"

3/26/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Hmm...turns out saying "booger" on the air is NOT grounds for firing someone. Johnny had a year left on his contract and somebody decided to sue for it. Out of the blue, a settlement... minus his attorney's quite reasonable 51%...has shown up in Johnny's mailbox. Even with everybody's mitts on his money, Johnny is still walking away with a lump sum of $24,000. Art voices all of our concerns: "Good golly...Fever with money?" Johnny goes on a bender, meets some friends and buys some clothes. He also made some investments...like see-through soap! A long Harmonica!! (He might need some help with his choices...) Venus and the Gang convince the Good Dr. he should be investing what's left. He decides to plunk a bunch down on a condo at "Gone With the Wind Estates." It's a client of Herb's...so you know it's got to be good! The Estate is...nice...in a 'plantation' sort of way. Johnny hates it! No amount of cutesy street names can make up for his condo-hatred. Will Johnny get out of his purchase? Will Les get to see the pool? Will Jennifer convince Andy a Grandfather Clock is the perfect lobby accessory? Find out this week on the WKRP-Cast!! S4E06 - "Who's On First?"

3/19/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Herb's in the Hospital being checked for potential ticker troubles. Whatever the doctor might tell him can't be as bad as the little item he finds in today's paper. Carlson confirms it! WKRP is interviewing sales people! It sounds long term! Back at the station, the cheap cologne brigade has assembled on Jennifer's doorstep. Andy, for some reason, is conducting the interviews in Art's office. Instead of causing Herb REAL ticker troubles, Jennifer says she'd like to give this Account Executive thing a go...at least for a couple of weeks. She and Art...who's filling in for Herb...head to the Coliseum and a meeting with Pat Perillo. Pat, it turns out, is a shady concert promoter and 'phone only' associate of Mr. Herbert R. Tarlek. The three meet in a questionable hallway somewhere in the Coliseum. Art is mistaken for Herb and Jennifer convinces Art to go with it. THEN, it turns out, Pat wants to meet Art. But, uh, Art is Herb. So, Who's going to be Art? Hang on, Fellow Babies!! This one gets WEIRD!! It's the second part of our rollercoaster ride through Guntzelman World and the laughs are HUGE!! Push 'play', then keep your hands and arms inside the ride at all times... WATCH ALONG DETAILS... [Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! S4E05 - "Straight from the Heart"

3/12/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Herb is going on vacation...with his insurance papers. It's how ol' "Work Hard/Play Hard" Herbie rolls. Or maybe not. Jennifer starts to worry, Les starts to dial hospitals. He starts with the cheapest first, so it doesn't take long. One call is enough and Huggable Herbie has been located. Les decides to visit Herb before jetting off to Omaha and Copper Cob Accolades. Herb decides to visit a Porn Theater. Hang on...there is a rationale, but this gets weird. Herb's decided, in order to live life to the fullest, you've gotta get a front row seat at a 3D Porn House. In a related story, Cincinnati Vice is cracking down on purveyors of porn and pork-like products...er, hold it...wrong cart. Les, Herb and the whole gang (minus Jennifer...for some reason) wind up in the klink. Jailer "Mel" saves the day and the poor MTM Set People sleep for about three days after this one is done. S4E04 - "Rumors"

3/5/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Johnny's got lizards...big ones. The landlord is fumigating, so Johnny is out on the street! He appeals to the gang for a place to crash. Les says no because Johnny's messy. Herb just says 'no.' Andy and Venus both seem to be hosting exchange students. Bailey takes pity on our poor beleaguered morning man. She will give him a place to stay until the de-lizarding is finished. The rumor mill kicks into high gear immediately. Even Jennifer, Venus and Andy are whispering and snickering behind Bailey's back. Bailey decides to 'give 'em something to talk about.' Johnny just wants it to stop. If worrying about morning fill-in guy Rex isn't enough, now Johnny has to worry about Bailey's virtue. Hey...didja hear? Push 'play' and I'll give you all the sordid details... WATCH ALONG DETAILS... S4E03 - "The Union"

2/27/2024
WELCOME BACK!! It's time to organize, it's time to unionize, it's time to "look for...that union label...". WKRP has had another bit of a ratings surge. The lack of commercials following Dr. Bob's Boycott seems to have attracted listeners. The Mighty KRP is now ranked 10th among all Cincinnati Radio Stations. Art's ready to celebrate with a few raises! While Art's looking for someplace cheap but elegant to hold a company dinner, the rest of the gang is sneaking around whispering about unions. They held a meeting over at WPIG...at least that's what Johnny heard. Herb takes word to the Big Guy: the troops are looking to organize. Once Art hears this, the battle is on! The Big Guy doesn't want a union...but how will he stop it? He decides to consult a higher power...Mama. Will the hob-nailed boot of management be lifted from the necks of KRPs toiling employees? Not if Mama C. has anything to say about it! She's ready to sell the station tomorrow if it goes Union today. Well, maybe...then again, maybe not. Would you want to cross Mama? We need a secret handshake before you're allowed in the meeting. Oh, you've got roses? Sure, come on in! Push 'play' and look up for a message from our sponsor. WATCH ALONG DETAILS... S4E02 - "An Explosive Affair - PT02"

2/20/2024
WELCOME BACK!! You made it back for Part 2! (a lot of people didn't in 1981). In case you need a refresher, we've got a Bomb threat!! Andy dispatched Venus and Johnny to the Transmitter Building in the middle of Part One. The guys are blowing off the dust and trying to keep some tunes on the WKRP Air. Things are...rough. The turntable doesn't want to play and the bookie doesn't want to talk. Wing, Johnny's Chinese Bookie and Restauranteur, put Johnny on hold just minutes before the biggest hunch bet of his life was at the post. 'Fever's Dream', an 80 to 1 long shot was screaming to Johnny for a bet. If only he can make it in time. When the horse came through...but the bookie didn't...Johnny takes his frustrations out on the phone. Three quick whacks with the big metal toolbox left Ma Bell's Magic Device in tiny shards of psychedelic spaghetti. At the end of last week's show, Andy realizes the bomb might be out at the transmitter instead of in the Flimm Building. But how do you contact the guys when the phone is in pieces on the floor? Call their cell?? Sorry, this is 1981. Put down that Toolbox and push "play"!! It's time for an EXPLOSIVE WKRP-Cast Conclusion! WATCH ALONG DETAILS... [Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog" episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. Generic music beds and stings were used in place of the original music for the syndicated version of the series. 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. S4E01 - "An Explosive Affair" - PT01

2/13/2024
WELCOME BACK!! It's a busy day around the Mighty 'KRP!! Joyce Armor, the woman who used to have Jennifer's job, has returned, The usual round of complaints about Johnny have arrived, Venus and Johnny are gambling in the Control Room and oh, yeah...there's a bomb threat. Bomb threat? Excuse me!! Andy says its normal for a newly popular station to get these kinds of things. Everyone would figure it's a hoax if it weren't for John Davidson having his show blown up over on Channel 73 in Dayton. Just to be safe, let's call the Bomb Squad and see if they can bring over some bomb sniffing dogs (oh, sorry...didn't mean to bring up a sore subject). Venus and Johnny have been dispatched to the Transmitter Building, Art and Joyce have dispatched themselves to Emilio's and the rest of the gang has been dispatched to the sidewalk. Grab a Buckeye Newshawk Award on your way out. There's no way we could possibly wrap this one up in a single half hour! We see the dreaded "To Be Continued" at the end! What are Art and Joyce up to? S3XTRA04 - INTERVIEW with Max Tash

2/6/2024
A SPECIAL INTERVIEW!! Hey there, Fellow Babies! If you're a fan of WKRP at all (and if you're listening to this podcast, we're guessing you are) you've probably seen the name "Max Tash" in the credits. It's the first name listed over the nighttime city shots when the "Went to a Bartender" closing theme begins. Picturing it in your head? Max was working for WKRP from before the beginning. He was an MTM "runner/gopher" on the production while casting was happening. He was production associate in the first season, Associate Producer in Seasons 2 and 3, then Coordinating Producer in the 4th Season. He was there for all 88 episodes...all the way through to "Up and Down the Dial." Only Hugh Wilson has his name in the credits of WKRP more times than Max Tash. Max was kept pretty busy with production duties, but during his tenure with WKRP, he did write a single episode. Max came up with the much-loved "Clean Up Radio Everywhere" episode featuring Dr. Bob Halyer (Hallier? Halyers?), the Jerry Falwell-like preacher who is ready to clean up Cincinnati radio. Max has been a friend of the podcast since our first few weeks. Via e-mail, he's supplied us with some great details as we've been working our way through the episodes. Max was happy to answer e-mail questions but, although we've asked a few times, Max has never agreed to speak with us for an interview. When we told him we just HAD to have his comments about "CURE" he said, "oh, okay." So get ready fellow babies...Heeeeere's Max! We talked to Max for more than an hour...and barely scratched the surface of the millions of stories he has tucked away. He is a wealth of knowledge about the show, about Hugh Wilson...about everything WKRP! We hope we can talk Max into another session with us at the end of the series. Either way, here is the incredible Max Tash, with information about "CURE", "The Famous Teddy Z", "Frank's Place", The Pussy Cat Theater (!) and a WHOLE lot more. Hey Fellow Babies!! We talked to Gary Sandy. Don't miss our exclusive interview with Andy Travis now available from the WKRP-Cast. Wherever you get your podcasts. THE WKRP-CAST IS IN RE-RUNS!! S3E22 - "Clean Up Radio Everywhere" (w/Max Tash)

1/30/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Dr. Bob Halyers (Halliers? Halyer?) has come to WKRP with one thing on his mind: cleaning up the airwaves!! Dr. Bob is the head of "Clean Up Radio Broadcasting" aka CURB. Yes, it's possible he was also head of something called "Clean Up Radio Everywhere" or CURE...but that was an earlier draft. We get into the details about all things "CURB/CURE" with a VERY special Guest! WKRP Associate & Coordinating Producer MAX TASH joins us with his insight. You see, not only was Max doing his production duties on this one...he also WROTE it! Well, maybe not word-for-word...but it was his IDEA! (He'll tell you more about that in the podcast.) Do NOT miss this very special episode of WKRP...and a very special episode of the WKRP-Cast! What are you waiting for? Those dirty words aren't going to listen to themselves!! Oh, and as promised, here is our "Sweet Sixteen"...these are the songs in the naughty word montage (we know you got most of them...but just in case you didn't recognize one or two): Who Are You - The Who (1978) Money - Pink Floyd (1971) Big Shot - Billy Joel (1978) Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band Hair of the Dog - Nazreth (1975) The Hurricane - Bob Dylan (1976) The Bitch is Back - Elton John (1974) Lawyers, Guns & Money - Warren Zevon (1978) Precious - Pretenders (1979) Laura - Bily Joel (1982) Bus Rider - The Guess Who (1970) Some Girls - Rolling Stones (1978) Legs - ZZ Top (1983) Play Guitar - John "Cougar" Mellencamp (1983) Alright Now - Free (1970) Start Me Up - Rolling Stones (1981) WATCH ALONG DETAILS... WELCOME BACK!! Johnny's gotten some GREAT news!! His ex...first ex, Paula...has called to tell him she's remarrying!! The remarrying isn't the good news...it's the fact Johnny will now be off the hook for alimony!! He decides to celebrate by spending all the money he just saved on a Jamaican adventure. There's a catch. Paula, his ex, wants him to meet the new guy. Enter BUDDY! Buddy is being played by one of our favorites: Hamilton Camp is BACK! This one was written by Howard Hesseman. Don't miss this look at some of The Doctor's history and humanity. Oh, and wear a heavy coat...Buddy's a puncher!! You ready to catch the next Learjet? We'd go with you, but our monkey's sick. S3E20 - "Nothing to Fear But..."

1/16/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Johnny is filling in for Moss Steiger, the overnight guy. The Doctor is either hung over or dealing with a bad cold. Either way, he's wandering around the station with a towel over his head completely oblivious to the ROBBERY taking place in the station! The next day, the gang finds all the valuables are gone...the phones, Art's hobby equipment, even Les' typewriter! The only rational response is to install a burglar alarm...which The Big Guy does immediately!! Okay, so not IMMEDIATELY...but it'll be in by Friday. Which happens to be the same day as Herb's big shindig for Cincinnati Ad Agencies! He's gone all out...banquet room in the Flimm, catering, a coat check girl with legs to her shoulders...everything you need for the perfect Friday night. If you've been paying attention...or you know ANYTHING AT ALL about sitcoms...you know the burglar alarm and the party are going to combine for a hilarious evening. Or, possibly, an evening filled with John Donne quotes and firearms. With the crazy cats who show up at Herb's party, anything could happen!! Have you met Hilda? IMDb seems to have missed her, but she's very sweet. The olives spell out WKRP and there's a handgun pointed at Andy's head!! If we told you any more we might spoil the big surprise in Art's Office!! Intrigued? Frightened? Push "play" and hide under the covers...Les warned us this might happen. WATCH ALONG DETAILS... [Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! S3E19 - "A Simple Little Wedding"

1/9/2024
WELCOME BACK!! Imagine Mama Carlson is your mother. Now imagine having her help you plan your wedding. Carmen couldn't take it at first...all the way back in 1956. She and Arthur eloped just to get away from "the Boss." Carmen never had a "real" wedding ceremony. Twenty-five years later, Carmen's still not happy about spending time with Mama, but she and Art are planning a real ceremony to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary. They visit Mama Carlson hoping for her blessing...and a "hands off" approach to helping. Also, as the title of the episode says, they want to keep it simple. Mama says she's mellowed over the years. If this is mellow, we'd rather not see her before the mellowing took place!! Mama says she agrees to Art and Carmen's requests...in voice, maybe, but certainly not in spirit. Meanwhile, back at the station Herb has called a couple of strippers who he happens to have in his Rolodex. We meet a new recurring character and he is a HOOT! This is our first interaction with "Hirsch", Mama's long-suffering butler. Talk about a love-hate relationship...with a heavy emphasis on the "hate". So, are you Bride's side or Groom's side? Is Senator Taft here?? Uh, no...I think he's dead. Maybe I could get you a Silver Bullet Cocktail...shaken, not stirred? We don't want to disrupt the nuptials, which is why, before the strippers get here, you need to push "play". We'll enjoy something old, something new, something seedy...and vibrating, too!! S3E18 - "Out to Lunch"

1/2/2024
RIP-Howard Hesseman: We didn't have a chance to add anything to the episode, but we did want to take a moment to mention the passing of Howard "Dr. Johnny Fever" Hesseman on Jan. 29th of 2022. He was 81 years old. WELCOME BACK!! Everyone knows the wheels of commerce are greased by a steady flow of cocktails. At least, if you're Herb Tarlek, it's how things work. Herb has been on a sales binge for nearly a month now...which means he's also been on a drinking binge. We've got Herb quoting Rip Tide and hiding big bottles of expensive looking bourbon in his bottom desk drawer. Okay, so it's an expensive looking bottle. The bourbon...not so much. Herb has been downgrading the brew with some cheap stuff and a funnel. His clients don't seem to mind. Herb may or may not have a problem. Okay...yeah...he's got a problem. Without lecturing, Art gives Herb a pretty effective lecture. Herb realizes things may not be as "okey-fine" as he thinks. He decides to try to correct his course before it's all gotten completely out of hand. Like any good After School Special, we learn the big lesson in the third act. Then everyone goes home happy and better off than they were before the whole thing started. Well, Craig T. Nelson might not be better off...but we won't have to worry about him next week! You look a little green. Would you just hit "play" before you pass out, already?? Cheers!! WATCH ALONG DETAILS... [Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! WELCOME BACK!! If you're Les Nessman, you know how important it is to stay vigilant. Commies are everywhere!! Pinkos, and other ne'er-do-wells who would undo our great democracy must be vigilantly repelled...even if one of them happens to be your own father! This is an amazing story to take on in a single half hour of television. They threw in a lot of jokes...we've got a hilariously slapstick "B"-story involving Venus, Johnny and a studio project. We've got Jennifer preparing for Paris in the Springtime with a riotously off-kilter collection of travel phrases. You've never seen these in High School French Class! Then, as you're laughing along at these great running gags, you suddenly realize you've been hit right in the heart with a gut-wrenching performance from an on-fire Richard Sanders. Or maybe it's ANOTHER gut-wrenching performance of some note courtesy of the guy who's playing Les' dad...Les' real dad...not Lester Nessman, Sr. Get ready for an under-appreciated gem in the WKRP episode bag. Oh, did we mention...we've got SAM ANDERSON??!! How could this get any better? What are you waiting for??!! Push 'play' for a major Red Scare. WATCH ALONG DETAILS... [Want to watch along with us? The 50 year old Art-Deco structure is scheduled for demolition...according to the Registered Letter Art got in today's mail. The gang is outraged...livid...but, hey, we're talking Real Estate Mega-bucks, so what're ya gonna do?? WKRP is the nerve center. Bailey is in charge while Jennifer is supporting the effort with her heretofore unknown typing skills!! The lady can TYPE! (just not for Herb!!) Will the Flimm be saved? 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. Over 88 episodes that's more than four hours of lost content, including the performance by "Detective" at the end of "Hoodlum Rock." Get the COMPLETE series...get the Shout Factory DVDs.
