What if Disney Ran Your Ambulance Service? A Customer Service Approach to EMS and Acute Care Medicine.

11/3/2023
EMS providers often think about the acute care medicine component of their career. Although this is incredibly important, have you ever stopped to think about what is actually happening from an interpersonal perspective? By providing high quality, evidence supported patient care, we are providing a service to our communities and our patients which we ultimately bill and/or receive funding for. Because of this, patients are our customers, and deserve to be treated as such. As EMS professionals we need to be approaching EMS in a way that is clinically center, but driven by customer service, or as Will Guidara says, "Unreasonable Hospitality." How would you perform differently if Disney ran your ambulance service? Stay safe, and do good care!

People Don't (Usually) "Just Fall Down!"

But when was the last time you stopped to think about how the patient ended up on the floor in the first place? Do some patients just trip over the cat? Certainly. But often, our fall patients are sicker than we perceive, and need our help to facilitate their care. Join me, as we explore the intricate components of patient assessment in a way that will help us all ensure there isn't more than meets the eye! **Views and Opinions are My Own*** Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085408611085 Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clinical_concepts_podcast/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ClinConPod Follow us on Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-clinical-concepts-podcast/?viewAsMember=true Visit us online: https://theclinicalconceptspodcast.buzzsprout.com/ Send us an email: clinicalconceptspodcast@gmail.com Stay safe, and do good care!

Tracheostomy vs. Laryngectomy Management

10/3/2022
As an EMS provider, we take care of thousands of acutely and chronically ill patients every year. When we encounter a patient with a tracheostomy the conversation usually goes like this: Patient's Caregiver: "The patient has a "'trach!'" Paramedic: "Crap." If you are anything like me, I remember learning about tracheostomies and laryngectomies as a paramedic student, but I will be honest, I was so focused on everything else I was not as focused on this. But, the first time I ever encountered a critically ill tracheostomy patient, I really wished I would have paid more attention. Join me as we take a dive into the tracheostomy and laryngectomy patient as we discuss the "news you can use," "brain tips to finger tips," overview of how to recognize, manage, and not panic the next time you encounter a stoma with (or without) a tube in it! Hey man, that's my weed!

9/20/2022
Patient: "I'm nauseated, i'm vomiting, my belly hurts, and I use cannabis a lot! I have cannabis hyperemesis syndrome." Paramedic: "You have what now?" Cannabis (marijuana) use for medical and recreational purposes alike is more common now than ever before. Speaking of common, EMS providers often encounter patients who fall into the trap of cyclic vomiting, chronic nausea, and diffuse abdominal pain. But, have you ever stopped to ponder whether or not these two topics are related? Is Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) on your differential diagnosis list for the nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain patient? Join me as we take a dive into the "need to know" pathophysiology for EMS, diagnosis, and care plan development for the patient possibly experiencing CHS!
