Pedro Pastrana - Live From Mr. Tipples

1/22/2024
Racketeer Radio KFQX presents Radio Remote Broadcasts Live from Mr. Tipples in San Francisco, Ca featuring Pedro Pastrana January 17 2024 Racketeer Radio KFQX presents Live Remotes, which broadcast live Bands & Artists on air only on Racketeer Radio KFQX. Listen live at www.RacketeerRadio.com or the Racketeer Radio KFQX App, available on both Apple and Android Marketplace. A music creator rethinking the concept of Puerto Rican music, Pedro crosses over invisible frontiers with an (extra)ordinary approach to music. He aims at fusing the earthy quality of folk music with forward looking compositions and live performances, reflecting the mixed identities of his heritage and influences. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Pedro José Pastrana grew up in the jíbaro music tradition and surrounded by the vocabulary of other popular sounds. This upbringing would help him develop a keen instinct for playing in settings outside of his element. In 2009 he got a scholarship at Purdue University to study Science. This experience opened the door to meet other cultures, listen to different types of music and understand them from the perspective of a Puerto Rican cuatro player. He has played the instrument on a variety of musical contexts; from traditional jíbaro, Afro-Cuban music, frequenting bluegrass and jazz jam sessions, touring the southern regions of México, all the way to being an active member of the Bay Area music scene, and playing/recording with the John Santos Sextet, Jerry Medina, Juango Gutierrez, Orestes Vilató, Atabal, Gary Nuñez, Andy Montañez, among others. His debut album, Crónicas de la Pierna Inquieta consists of eight original tracks, serving as snapshots of self-discovery, inspired by the coming of age events of the past 13 years. This work combines incisive, Cuatro generated groove based songwriting with the sounds of Puerto Rico as the color palette. Sam Rudin - Live From The Back Room

Listen live at www.RacketeerRadio.com or the Racketeer Radio KFQX App, available on both Apple and Android Marketplace. A Special Christmas Eve remote broadcast Racketeer Radio KFQX style In Mr Rudin's own words: When I was much younger, I, like many pianists, would get some lucrative gigs during the holidays, playing the seasonal favorites in the background of parties and events. And I used to think, “wouldn't it be great to play this stuff in a concert setting, for actual listeners?" Clearly, in terms of heritage and beliefs, my connections to the holiday are slim. But as a sentient being in the USA, I am fully acculturated, and as a musician, I couldn't help noticing that, if I chose carefully, and stayed far away from Rudolph and Frosty...hey, a lot of this music is really good - and not just good, but flexibly available to a lot of interpretations. And after all, it is an important part of our ever-diminishing shared culture. So, in spite of the somewhat flippant headline, this will be an entirely respectful, and musically sincere, evening. So if you can't be with your family tonight, or if your own heritage and belief systems have you heading out for Chinese food - please stop by and and indulge in our shared musical tradition. And no!, the night will NOT include an obligatory chorus of "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel." Originally aired: December 24 2023 Sam Rudin The Back Room Racketeer Radio KFQX

Keith Lamar 'Freedom First' - Live From Death Row

10/12/2023
Racketeer Radio KFQX presents Radio Remote Broadcasts Live from Mr. Tipples in San Francisco, Ca featuring Keith Lamar live from Death Row in Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, Ohio. October 4 2023 Racketeer Radio KFQX presents Live Remotes, which broadcasts live Bands & Artists on air only on Racketeer Radio KFQX. Listen live at www.RacketeerRadio.com or the Racketeer Radio KFQX App, available on both Apple and Android Marketplace. In 1989, Keith LaMar was sent to prison at age 19 for murder. He had been living in Cleveland, Ohio, where he sold drugs as a means of survival in the Crack-infested streets he knew as home. On a day that would forever change his life, Keith was robbed at gunpoint and exchanged gunfire with his robbers. He was shot twice in his legs and hit one of the other men in the chest. That young man, one a childhood friend, died. Keith pled guilty and was sent to prison for 18 years-to-life. Four years later, Keith was attempting to put together the broken pieces of his life at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, hoping for another chance at life. It was an Easter Sunday, and the weather had just turned warmer; Keith and about 400 other men were outside exercising in the rec-yard when commotion broke out inside and it became clear that some type of protest was underway. Keith made a quick decision to slip inside for a few minutes to secure his personal belongings (since his cell assignment was in the area being taken over). Once back out in the yard, he and the others waited to see what would transpire, watching as the bodies of several men were dumped onto the yard. As Easter came to an end, the Ohio State Highway Patrol rounded up those on the yard and secured them into another part of the facility. Prison records prove that Keith was among them. Though no one could have predicted what exactly was happening, or how it would all result, an 11-day siege ensued. In the end, nine inmates and one guard ultimately lost their lives. When the dust began to settle, the State of Ohio needed someone on whom to pin several of the early inmate deaths. This is where Keith’s troubles began… A few months later, several prisoners were enticed with the promise of early paroles and/or dropped charges if only they would come up with a reasonable story to help the State sweep up the “mess” at their out-of-control prison. They determined Keith would be the fall guy, and they pointed their fingers at him. Thus, to make it all come together convincingly, the prosecution withheld actual confessions from his defense, as well as eyewitness statements that contradicted their fabricated version of events. In spite of zero DNA or forensic evidence, they moved forward with their accusations against Keith. In fact, they made sure his trial would be racially biased in their favor by calling for the removal of the few potential black jurors, and by holding his trial in an all-white county in southern Ohio. In spite of having no motive to kill anyone, no actual proof connecting him, nor any affiliation with any of the groups organizing the uprising, the jury didn’t take long to find Keith LaMar guilty of the murder of five of the inmates. He was sentenced to death.ore info on his case, evidence and updates can be found at keithlamar.org. Originally aired: October 04 2023 Keith Lamar Mr. Tipples Jazz Club Racketeer Radio KFQX

Listen live at www.RacketeerRadio.com or the Racketeer Radio KFQX App, available on both Apple and Android Marketplace. Albert Marquès is a pianist, composer, and political activist from a working class, industrial town outside of Barcelona, where he worked in factories through school. A member of a Catalan anti-capitalist organization as a teenager, he narrowly escaped being detained for his activism. Influenced by the local punk scene, as well as jazz recordings of musicians like Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Michel Camilo and Herbie Hancock, he was self-taught until he attended Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. After graduation, he made two pivotal trips which changed his life, spending a month in the West Bank in Palestine and a month in Cuba. During his four years in Barcelona, he played with the best musicians of the scene, such as Marc Miralta, thanks to his unique, non-academic sound. Upon graduating, he moved to Paris, where he worked in a McDonald’s until he learned French. In Paris, he played with musicians such as Remi Vignolo and Pierre Perchaud, and became the pianist in African American drummer Leon Parker’s quartet. At 25, Albert moved to New York City, without knowing even one person, to play jazz. After a year and a half working as a waiter and going to jam sessions every night, he met his mentor Arturo O'Farrill, who gave him his own baby grand piano. In addition to his musical influence and encouragement, O’Farrill hired him to teach with his organization, the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, a non-profit that gives free Latin jazz music lessons in the most disadvantaged New York City public schools. Albert also plays and collaborates with his sons, Adam and Zack O’Farrill. Originally aired: October 04 2023 Albert Marques Mr. Tipples Jazz Club Racketeer Radio KFQX
