Brady and Anna Peek of Limestone County were named Alabama’s OYFF. The Peeks raise row crops in Limestone and Lauderdale counties and have one son, Ridge. Since beginning their farm in 2010, the Peeks have increased yields and efficiency; expanded to include custom farming and a trucking business; and diversified into raising flowers and sweet corn they sell to local customers. Federation communications specialist, Maggie Edwards, sits down with Jeanette Tew, the winner of the annual Heritage Cooking Contest. The 2023 Heritage Cooking Contest was Sept. 7 in Montgomery. This year’s theme for the Alabama Farmers Federation Women’s Leadership Division competition featured baked cheesecakes, honoring the state’s dairy farmers. Elmore County’s Jeanette Tew won first place for her Sweet Potato Pecan Baked Cheesecake. In second place was Randolph County’s Barbara Norred who created Strawberry Cheesecake. Biscoff Cookie Cheesecake earned Montgomery County’s Amy Belcher third place. The three cooks received cash prizes courtesy of the Federation. On today’s episode, we travel to this year’s County President’s Conference held in Chattanooga Tenn. Jeff Helms caught up with several attendees for their input on the annual event. In the wrap-up, we’d like to inform forest landowners about a new cost-share program for the Southern Pine Beetle prevention program managed by the Alabama Forestry Commission. Technical assistance and financial incentives will soon be available to help forest landowners in Alabama to implement prevention practices aimed at reducing susceptibility of their pine stands from a southern pine beetle (SPB) attack. The primary objective of the SPB Prevention Cost-share Program is to help forest landowners implement forest management practices that will ultimately reduce SPB damage and outbreaks in Alabama. Administered by the Alabama Forestry Commission, the program is made possible through a grant from the USDA Forest Service. The application will be available to the public beginning July 14, 2023, and will remain open until August 31, 2023.
