In this episode of the briefing, I'm joined by Avi Bell, professor of law at Bar Ilan University and University of San Diego, Yaakov Lappin, In-House Analyst at The MirYam Institute and David Hacham, former Advisor on Arab Affairs to successive Israeli Ministers of Defense and a retired Colonel in the IDF. Prof. Bell and I began by discussing the ICJ ruling in response to the case brought by South Africa against Israel, the threat of prosecution attempts of IDF soldiers under universal jurisdiction and the powers of enforcement held by the ICJ and the ICC. We went on to talk about the revelations that at least twelve members of UNRWA had been shown to have played a direct role in the Hamas massacre of October 7th. Thereafter, I spoke to Colonel Hacham and Yaakov about the ongoing progress of the IDF inside Gaza, Egypt's resistance to the IDF holding the Rafah crossing in any long term security arrangement, as well as the security perimeter the IDF is establishing around the perimeter of the Strip. In this episode of the podcast, I sit down to interview Iris Haim, mother of Yotam Haim Z"L, who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7th, 2023, and killed by IDF soldiers on December 15th, 2023, as the result of a horrific operational miscalculation. On October 7th, 2023, during the murderous massacre against Israel launched by Hamas, Iris's son, Yotam, was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, a community located adjacent to the Gaza Strip. He was 28 years old. From that point onward, Yotam was held in captivity by Hamas and Iris dedicated herself to campaigning for his release and for the release of all of the hostages, taking her message to parliaments, governments and audiences throughout the English speaking world - from Australia to the United Kingdom. Uniquely, Iris also became a leading Israeli voice on the subject of unity, love and support for the Israeli government and the soldiers of the IDF at this time. Rapidly rising to become an opinion leader and a symbol of hope domestically, Iris refused to countenance any calls for division or for internecine fighting within the Jewish state; all the while, Yotam, her son, remained in captivity. On December 7th, 2023, Yotam, together with two other hostages, emerged from where they were being held inside Gaza. Tragically, all three of the hostages were fired upon and killed by members of the Israel Defense Forces, who were operating inside the Gaza Strip. Incredibly, upon learning about this awful series of events, Iris sent a voice note to the soldiers who had killed her son, telling them that she loved them, supported them, and that she and her family invited them to visit her home. Those soldiers did so, and they informed Iris that they had ceased functioning as a result of the tragic miscalculation, but that having received her words and visited with her, they were able to begin returning to service. In this episode of the podcast, I ask Iris about Yotam of blessed memory, about her dedication to Israel's soldiers and society and about her plans for the future. I believe Iris's message to be perhaps the most vital of any I've ever received, and I encourage you to share it with your entire network - far and wide, so that others might benefit from her words and support her in her mission. Amir Tibon moved with his wife Miri to the pastoral Kibbutz Nahal Oz, right on the Gaza border, after the 2014 Israel-Gaza war. The couple, then without children, wanted to support the small community. They fell in love with the place and stayed. A year ago, they bought a house there. On the morning of October 7, the sounds of falling mortars drove the couple into the reinforced “safe room” in which daughters Galia, 3 and Carmel, 1, were sleeping. On November 20th, 2023, we brought Orit and Aviram Meir, mother and uncle of Almog Meir-Jan respectively, to the British House of Commons to tell their story. Almog was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7th and remains in captivity to this day. They were joined by Iris Haim, a palliative care nurse whose son Yotam was also kidnapped and remains a hostage to this day. A quiet Shabbat morning, also the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah where Jews celebrate finishing reading the Torah and then start to read it again, “In the Beginning”, was shattered by a mass invasion of Hamas terrorists, smashing through the concrete border wall, paragliding into Israel, before rampaging through a music festival killing 260, machine gunning people at the bus stop and in their own homes in Sderot and on kibbutzim. Gruesome videos and pictures swiftly circulated on X, horror one can never unsee. The elderly and babies slaughtered, women raped, bodies taken in to Gaza paraded and desecrated, mothers with children in their arms abducted are all now hostages in Gaza’s terror tunnels and tower blocks. Depravity and barbarism reminiscent of the European Holocaust and Russian pogroms. How did Israel’s famed security services miss this evil plan fermenting? Benjamin expresses his fundamental opposition to any peace agreements predicated upon Israeli territorial concessions and asserts that agreements should be based on the principle of peace for peace, not land. Chuck is willing to consider land for peace, but acknowledges that his support for a deal with Syria in 2000 was mistaken. They then discuss the dangers of the Saudi demand that the US accede to their having an enrichment capability. Chuck believes that a sufficient regime of inspections can be established. Episode 34 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Benjamin Anthony, Co-Founder & CEO of the Miryam Institute. In this episode, Chuck and Benjamin discuss the pros and cons of a possible US-Israeli defense treaty, a potential side product of the US-Israeli-Saudi normalization deal now under discussion. Chuck describes the conditions under which a treaty such as this would be favorable for Israel, although he is in a minority view among Israeli defense officials, Benjamin leans more towards the majority view, raising concerns about the future deployment of IDF forces abroad. They also briefly touch on the assassination of the head of the Russian Wagner Force, Yevgeny Prigozhin and the first Republican presidential debate. Benjamin expresses concern over GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s call for ending military aid to Israel when the current 10-year package expires in 2028. Chuck shares his deep concern, believing that the relationship with the US is critical to Israel’s national security. The two disagree on the background to statements such as Ramaswamy's and similar ones by Democratic candidates. Benjamin attributes this primarily to anti-Semitism, particularly on campus.
