8: Episode 6: The Future is Unwritten

1/10/2019
Every system is built on an invisible foundation, supported by invisible scaffolding, which is our cultural understanding of mental health. If our system isn’t fit for purpose, what culture, what beliefs are shoring up this system? In this final episode in the six-part series of Where There’s a Will, we will try and shine a light on some of the philosophical underpinnings of our system as it stands. Because there’s a battleground – and some very different worldviews – clamouring to shape what our mental health systems globally will look like in the future. In this episode, we speak to Professor Peter Kinderman, of the University of Liverpool; Dr Pat Bracken, psychiatrist; and Dr Terry Lynch, GP and psychotherapist; about their vision for the future of our mental health models. We also speak to Nikki, who got help for her depression through the private sector, and paints a picture of a service which puts people at the centre. 7: Episode 5: If You Tolerate This

12/13/2018
Children are the most precious and vulnerable members of our society. They are a blank slate – they come into the world with no hang ups, preconceptions, fears or worries. We teach them all that. But more and more, our children are finding it hard to cope. Childhood, this precious, carefree time is becoming a tougher ground to navigate. For some it is time full of worries, stresses and fear. In this episode, we speak to Niall Muldoon, the Ombudsman for Children, Paul Gilligan, CEO of St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, and Dominic Laydon, CEO of Aware. We also speak to two mothers, Samantha and Frances, whose children have been in the mental health system, and hear the challenges they faced in getting their children the help they needed. 6: Episode 4: Stigma

12/6/2018
This episode turns the lens on ourselves: because while the mental health system needs to be fixed, we have to look at our role in that as a society. We need to ask ourselves: do we have an epidemic of mental health problems in Ireland? How do we contribute to poor mental health through stigma, and through creating policies and planning for a society that doesn’t put people at the centre? And we need to ask, how do we collectively build communities and systems that catch people when they fall? In this episode, we speak to Brian Higgins, CEO of Pieta House, Shari McDaid, CEO of Mental Health Reform, Dominic Laydon, CEO of Aware; and Leon tells his personal story of facing stigma within and outside of the system. 4: Episode 2: System Of A Down

11/22/2018
In this episode, we pull back the curtain and see the inner workings of our mental health system, its origins and legacies. We’ll learn what happened when Ireland moved to close our old asylum system and create something new. And we’ll look at what we are left with now: the problems, the waiting lists and the logjams, and ask, is this fixable? And if so, how? In this episode, we speak to Martin Rogan, CEO of Mental Health Ireland, John Saunders, CEO of Shine and Chair of the Mental Health Commission, Dr Eddie Murphy, Clinical Psychologist, Dr John Hillery, President of the Irish College of Psychiatrists, and finally, Lisa shares her experiences being bounced in and out of the system over a number of years. 3: Episode 1: The Hardest Thing To Do

We so often hear the message that if you are suffering or having a hard time with your mental health, to just ask for help. The story we don’t often hear is what happens when you do.
