The Frodo Franchise

How a single film trilogy became a global phenomenon that transformed modern Hollywood. Far more than a typical behind-the-scenes chronicle, Kristin Thompson’s landmark study The Frodo Franchise examines how The Lord of the Rings films became a cultural and industrial force that transformed moviemaking, marketing, digital technology, fan culture, and even the international profile of New Zealand. Drawing on extensive interviews with the filmmakers, designers, producers, and craftspeople behind the trilogy, as well as creators of fan websites, employees of companies creating licensed merchandise, owners of New Zealand tour companies, and more, Thompson reveals how Peter Jackson and his collaborators seized a moment of rapid change in the early 2000s. The convergence of digital effects, online fandom, home-video innovation, and blockbuster economics created a perfect environment for a project that was as unprecedented in scale as it was influential. The result was not just three films, but a blueprint for the event-franchise era that followed. Thompson traces how The Lord of the Rings reshaped studio strategy, redefined fantasy filmmaking, altered global tourism, and set new expectations for cross-media storytelling. Written in 2006, her analysis remains strikingly relevant, showing why the trilogy’s impact continues to echo even through today’s entertainment landscape. In honor of the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, this special audiobook edition features a new epilogue by the author, reflecting on how The Lord of the Rings franchise has continued to expand across films, games, merchandise, and fan culture since the book’s original publication.
