Interdependence in the Post-Multilateral Era

Jeffrey A. Hart

This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. While it has failed in the non-tariff area, the post-war multilateral trade regime succeeded in reducing the major tariff barriers. This stimulated international trade and thus international competition for a range of industries in the United States and Europe. The implications of this increased competition were not assimilated into their countries' political processes until a breakdown developed in the stable, often oligopolistic, market structures that had characterized national markets until the 1970s in a number of major industries. As the established market structures changed, governments intervened "temporarily" to contain disruptive import competition and stabilize the industry concerned. Temporary intervention, however, soon became more permanent and more far-reaching as regulation spread throughout entire sectors, as opposed to a few products, and to more and more countries.
