Problematic Prophecy

7/14/2025
Have all of the prophecies about Jesus' death and resurrection already happened? Did the apocalypse come and go, and now we're just coasting? Here's the thing about prophecies: the good ones are never specific enough! Sure, every now and then someone will come along and give exact dates and times for when some apocalyptic event is going to happen, but those guys are inevitably just proven wrong. Then there are the other prophets. The biblical ones. They use heavy metaphors, preferring to talk about statues made of different materials, or beasts with the head of one animal and the claws of another, and we're left to try and piece together what the heck they're talking about. This conundrum has led to countless schools of thought regarding biblical prophecy, and today we're discussing one fairly prevalent (if controversial) one known as preterism. After that, we'll look at the grand-daddy of prophecy itself: Revelation! Fire-and-brimstone preachers love turning to the apocalypse of John to terrify their congregations into a constant state of anxious preparedness, but it's possible those congregants wouldn't be quite as worried if they knew the full history of that book. Did the early church leaders love it, or was there maybe some controversy about its veracity? (Spoiler: it's that second thing) ---- For early access to an ad-free version of every episode of Data Over Dogma, exclusive content, and the opportunity to support our work, please consider becoming a monthly patron at: https://www.patreon.com/DataOverDogma Follow us on the various social media places: https://www.facebook.com/DataOverDogmaPod https://www.twitter.com/data_over_dogma Have you ordered Dan McClellan's New York Times bestselling book The Bible Says So yet??? Tucker Vs Ted: The Israel Throwdown

7/7/2025
Forget the fourth of July- if you want real fireworks, you gotta check out the incendiary interview between Tucker Carlson and Ted Cruz. It was... a lot. But when two insufferable gasbags collide that hard, you're going to get a gas giant explosion. Just be glad you couldn't smell it. One of the points of contention had to do with Israel, and Cruz's insistence that the Bible commanded him (and all believers) to take care of it. Ol' Ted might not have known what the exact scripture was, but he was positive that it said that he had to defend Israel no matter what. Tucker had a different take. So is that what the scripture says? Are believers obligated to back the actions of Israel because the Bible says so, or is there more to the edict in Genesis? Then we head to the nine verses of Psalm 137 to explore one of the more disturbing imprecatory prayers in the Bible. It couldn't really mean that it wants people to dash children against a rock, right? That's gotta be just a metaphor, right? Right??? ---- For early access to an ad-free version of every episode of Data Over Dogma, exclusive content, and the opportunity to support our work, please consider becoming a monthly patron at: https://www.patreon.com/DataOverDogma Follow us on the various social media places: https://www.facebook.com/DataOverDogmaPod https://www.twitter.com/data_over_dogma Have you ordered Dan McClellan's New York Times bestselling book The Bible Says So yet??? Is Allie Beth Stuckey a Sheep or a Goat?

6/30/2025
Ooooh! Dan McClellan has a bee in his bonnet, and her name is Allie Beth Stuckey! This week we're looking at the parable of the sheep and the goats. In it, sheep are good, and goats are bad, and the Lord has some sorting to do. How do you get to be a sheep? Feed, house, clothe, and generally take care of your brothers and sisters. But that presents a problem for Allie Beth: who are her brothers and sisters? Well, let's just say that Ms Stuckey and Dr McClellan do not agree on the best way to interpret Jesus in Matthew 25. It's a showdown! And Allie Beth doesn't come out looking like a sheep. It's the goat vs the G.O.A.T! Then, we're getting positively archaeological up in here, as we explore some fascinating ancient papyri from a little island in the Nile river in southern Egypt. Elephantine island is a thousand miles from Israel, but the tiny community of ancient Hebrew people that lived there shed some incredible light on what Judaism might have looked like back then... and it might surprise you! ---- For early access to an ad-free version of every episode of Data Over Dogma, exclusive content, and the opportunity to support our work, please consider becoming a monthly patron at: https://www.patreon.com/DataOverDogma Follow us on the various social media places: https://www.facebook.com/DataOverDogmaPod https://www.twitter.com/data_over_dogma Have you ordered Dan McClellan's hit book The Bible Says So yet??? Ethnicity and the Bible

6/23/2025
What's your ethnicity? Who else is included in that group, and why do you draw those boundaries where you do? Well, this week we're bringing in hired-gun Bible expert Dr Aaron Higashi to walk us through the rich and sometimes confusing concept of ethnicity, and some of the surprising ways ethnic heritage plays out in the Bible (the Israelites ARE Canaanites? Whaaaaa???!) . Then, we're going to delve into Biblical law. There's a lot of debate about which laws of the Bible apply to modern believers, and which don't. How should one decide? Well, we're going to look at two different domains: laws about food, and laws about sex. What can we learn about one set of laws by looking at the other? Thanks so much to Aaron Higashi for filling in while McClellan continues to bounce all over the country. Did the Bible Steal its Stories?

6/16/2025
Were the authors of the Bible just writing firsthand accounts of events that actually happened? That's a pretty tough case to make. As a matter of fact, we have very good reason to believe that many of the stories of the bible have shared roots with many other stories/myths of ancient southwest Asia and northern Africa. This week, we'll look at many of those stories, and discuss their parallels and origins from around the region. We'll discuss what evidence scholars use to come to these conclusions, and have some fun trying to figure out who came up with what first. Then in our second segment, we'll look at Haggai. It's a book of only two chapters, and those chapters frankly don't seem like much on first blush. Pride Month vs. the Bible!

6/9/2025
Welp it's June, and that means LGBTQIA+ Pride month! At least that's what it means for many. For a minority of people, June is national grumpy homophobe month. One thing about the grumpy set is that they really love to use the Bible to shore up their dogmatic belief that gay folks (and trans and bi and all the other acronym-represented people) are going against God. So let's talk about it. Our first segment is about pride itself. The word, that is. Is the rainbow community committing the worst of the 7 deadly sins every June? Pastor Mark Driscoll sure seems to think so. Then we'll dive into some of the passages of the Bible folks use to justify their anti-LGBTQIA+ stance. Do those passages mean what those people say they mean? And even if they do, are modern believers required to follow them? ---- For early access to an ad-free version of every episode of Data Over Dogma, exclusive content, and the opportunity to support our work, please consider becoming a monthly patron at: https://www.patreon.com/DataOverDogma Follow us on the various social media places: https://www.facebook.com/DataOverDogmaPod https://www.twitter.com/data_over_dogma Have you ordered Dan McClellan's hit book The Bible Says So yet??? Bibliomancy! The Biblical Dance with the Devil?

6/2/2025
For episode 116, we're venturing into the spooky world of divination! Many a Christian pastor has railed against this practice, but what if the medium used for divining isn't a rod or a stick, but THE BIBLE ITSELF!? Does that take the curse off it? Make it worse? Will it work to provide other-worldly guidance in your life? Is it forbidden? We... well, we might answer some of these questions... But first, we take issue with one Mr Charlie Kirk. Ol' Chuck was pretty pleased with himself when he steamrolled over a college kid's question about whether Christians should be making a grab for the levers of political power. Brother Kirk's defense of Christian Nationalism was Biblical, in that it used scripture from the Bible as support, but was it correct? Episode 112: Wash Your Own Feet!

5/26/2025
This week we're getting all apocryphal, and diving headlong into Maccabees. Specifically, we're discussing the story of a mother and her sons in 2 Maccabees, chapter 7. This is the inspiring (?) tale of a family defying tyranny by refusing to eat, and all being brutally murdered for their trouble. And while the story itself is quite harrowing (and graphic!), it's small moments along the way that are actually worthy of some fascinating discussion. Then we go to the gospel of John, where there might be something fishy going on. We have talked about other parts of the Bible where references to feet have actually been euphemisms for genitals. So what are we to make of the moment in John where Jesus washes the feet of his disciples? ---- For early access to an ad-free version of every episode of Data Over Dogma, exclusive content, and the opportunity to support our work, please consider becoming a monthly patron at: https://www.patreon.com/DataOverDogma Follow us on the various social media places: https://www.facebook.com/DataOverDogmaPod https://www.twitter.com/data_over_dogma Have you ordered Dan McClellan's hit book The Bible Says So yet??? https://static.macmillan.com/static/smp/bible-says-so-9781250347466/?fbclid=IwY2xjawGLTkpleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHQY4Ahs0Hi289IcnsQMh_0OAVf3oGefyUsWkLjhfB8OF8nio1fmroJbXxA_aem_v_4sISp8Zt43zsKfDjx1aA Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 111: Just the Tip?

5/19/2025
Well kids, this one's a doozy! This week we're talking about a controversial Biblical practice that is still done by many today (and the truth is that it should probably be more controversial than it is). That's right, this week we're talking circumcision! It's such a strange practice, if you think about it, cutting off a piece of your child's flesh. And it leaves us with a load of questions: Where did it come from? Why did God command it? Who was supposed to do it? But before that, we're diving into one of the Bible's most confusing stories. Jephthah was a powerful commander who, with the Lord's help, was able to defeat his enemies and become one of the judges of Israel. But to get it all done, he made a deal with God that ended tragically. How did this happen? Why didn't God stop it? Is this a story of a haughty man making a foolish promise, or is there more to it? ---- HEY! TICKETS TO THE SECOND LEG OF THE DATA OVER DOGMA TOUR ARE STILL ON SALE! Episode 110: God's Swear Jar

5/12/2025
Remember when you were a kid, and your parents told you not to used certain words, but then sometimes THEY would use those words, and you didn't think that was ok because it seemed like a double-standard, but there was nothing you could do because they were big and you were small so you secretly said those words with your friends as a rebellion, but then your next-door neighbor overheard you and said something weird over your fence and you and your buddy got super wide-eyed and really didn't know what to make of it? No? Just me? Anyway, that's kind of how it feels to find out that the Bible has profanity in it. How much profanity? Enough to make a pretty fun segment about it on our show. But before that, we're talking about the Didache. If you haven't heard of it you're not alone, but it is a fascinating document. Is it an authentic account of the words of the twelve apostles? If not, what is it? Should it have been included as a book in the New Testament? ---- HEY! TICKETS TO THE SECOND LEG OF THE DATA OVER DOGMA TOUR ARE STILL ON SALE! 5/5/2025

Thank goodness for our phone calendars, because without them, none of us would have any idea when to break out the Peeps and Cadbury eggs! Well, in our first segment this week, we're going to discuss the dating of Easter. Why it happens when it happens, how to calculate it, and whether pastels will be back in fashion next Spring. Then, we're looking at Exodus and a very peculiar series of moments. God sends Moses in to confront pharaoh, but then God... hardens pharaoh's heart against him? That can't be right, can it? Episode 107: Immigrant Apocalypse with Yii-Jan Lin

4/21/2025
The way many people talk about immigration in the United States, you'd assume that it was an apocalyptic event. And actually, many of the most extreme voices in our society are literally saying as much. But this is not the first time American immigration has been linked to Biblical apocalypse. This week, we're bringing in Dr. Yii-Jan Lin, whose new book Immigration and Apocalypse: How the Book of Revelation Shaped American Immigration chronicles the many twists and turns of the eschatological mindset from Columbus straight through to the present. Did the first immigrants (the Europeans) think of their own journey as hastening the end times? How did that story change as time passed and they started to think of themselves as the "natives" of the land? What happened when other, non-European, non-Christians started landing on American shores? Find Dr Lin's book here: https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300253184/immigration-and-apocalypse/ ---- HEY! Episode 106: Usurer Error

4/14/2025
It's a sin so egregious that Christians weren't allowed to do it, BY LAW, for centuries! But now? Totally fine. Everybody participates. No big deal at all! The next time you meet a Bible literalist who is certain that you have to follow the laws of the Bible to the letter, but who is also pretty excited about capitalism, ask them about usury, and watch them fall all over themselves to pretend like it's fine. Because MAN, the Bible is just adamant that people shouldn't do that. Like, death penalty adamant. But what, technically, is usury? Is it just charging too much interest for a loan, or is it charging any interest at all? Who does the Bible allow to engage in usury, and under what circumstances? We're going to find out! This week, we don't want to make it bad, so we're going to take a sad song and make it better. The book of Jude may only be one chapter, but it's jam-packed with stuff for this show to talk about. Who wrote it, and when? Who was it written to? What grumblers is it mad about? We'll attempt to answer all these questions and more. Then, speaking of grumblers, we have some of our own to deal with! Whenever Dr. Dan says that the Bible is not a monotheistic book, people come out of the woodwork with scriptures that seem to contradict him. In our final segment, Dan will look at those verses and discuss whether they say what people are saying they say. ---- HEY! Episode 103: The Pastor Skeptic

3/24/2025
This week we welcome "deep skeptic" pastor Jeremy Steele to the show. Jeremy has spent recent years building an online congregation of people who don't feel seen or understood by the traditional church. He's here to tell us about life as a pastor, how he gathered his flock, and why people who are deconstructing the theologies they were raised with might still need a community like his. You can find Jeremy on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@skeptic.pastor Or find links to his book How Not to Suck as a Christian, his podcast Unbelief, and other stuff here: https://jeremy-steele.com/links ---- HEY! Episode 102: The Dave Ramsey Takedown

3/17/2025
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the big fight! In the red corner: personal finance guru and guy who makes millions by making poorer people feel bad about their debt, Dave "how's your retirement fund looking?" Ramsey. And in the blue corner: with a much lighter pocketbook but much heavier t-shirt collection, Dan "alright let's see it" McClellan. What could a Bible scholarship show possibly have to say about a personal finance guy, you might ask. Well, Mr. Ramsey styles himself a Christian personal finance guy, and in that capacity makes some pretty interesting claims. So, while we are not qualified to check him on his finance advice, when he veers into our lane, he's fair game. And boy, did that guy veer! Then, the Deuteronomist abides. There may be some ten dollar words ahead (words that Dan Beecher may or may not be able to pronounce), but don't let that fool you: the Deuteronomistic history is actually fascinating. ---- HEY! Episode 101: The Slave Bible

3/10/2025
Christians have had a missionary zeal since the beginning. From the dawn of Christianity, the mandate to share the "good news" has been a central theme of Christian life. But what is a Christian to do when it is clear that the audience they want to share the gospel with would react poorly to much of what's in the Bible? Well, at least in one case, the solution was just redact the heck out of it. On this week's show, we're talking about "The Slave Bible," a heavily truncated version of the good book, created for white enslavers to share with the black people they had enslaved. Why did they cut most of the book out? What parts did they see fit to leave in? And why did they want to preach Jesus' message to people whose humanity they clearly didn't honor or even acknowledge? Then, inspired by a preacher who recently had a lot to say on the subject, we're diving into the question of wealth. Much is said in the Bible about money, and the having of it. Specifically the having of a lot of it. There are famous passages about camels going through the eyes of needles, for example. But maybe that part felt a little ambiguous... Did Jesus really say "blessed are the poor" or did he say "blessed are the poor in spirit"? Is that difference that even makes sense? ---- HEY! Episode 100: Give Me Your Slave!

3/3/2025
Come celebrate round numbers with us as we embark on our 100th episode of Data Over Dogma! And what, you might ask, are we doing to mark this grand event? Have we carefully crafted a clips show looking back on the best moments of the last 100 weeks? Have we mindfully chosen topics that relate to the number 100? Well, no. No we haven't. It's just a regular show. Sorry. That said, it's an interesting one! First, we're covering a very interesting letter Paul sent to his buddy Philemon. Aside from revealing (rather casually, really) that he was in prison when he wrote it, Paul seems to speak out for his new helper, runaway enslaved person Onesimus. What does this letter reveal about Paul's view of slavery? What is Paul asking of Philemon? Why is everybody in prison all the time? Next we cover a topic that you hear about on this show a lot, but may not know much about it. What is the Septuagint? Why is it called that? Where did it come from? And why are we using a Greek text as an early witness to Hebrew scripture? ---- HEY! TICKETS FOR THE FIRST LEG OF THE DATA OVER DOGMA TOUR ARE NOW ON SALE!
