Paul's distrust of human centered ethics stems from his understanding of the human condition. With Adam humanity fell -- human fallenness meaning that people cannot always know and do what is right (Rom.3:10-11). They became slaves to sin (Rom.6:17-20). The Apostle Paul creates much confusion among Pastors, teachers, and denominationalists. Were the 12 apostles lax in completing their commission so God had to raise up Paul? Did the 12 act in error when they ordained Matthias to replace Judas? What does the Word of God tell us about the twelve apostle's commission and His raising up of this new Apostle Paul?

The Greek word Gehenna is used twelve times in our New Testament. Typically, most English Versions translate the word as hell. Is this a good rendering? What do the Scriptures of the New Testament mean when it speaks of Gehenna? How should the word be understood? Often the phrase unquenchable fire is used when speaking of Gehenna. Does unquenchable mean non-ending? How does Jesus' sacrifice of Himself for sin impact any of this?

For any Bible study to be true and accurate it must recognize Paul's authority and message as being something distinct and separate from what existed before him. Exploring Paul's background will help us understand him better and to interpret his words accurately. So, who was this man, Paul?
