Let's Talk: Interview with Sheriff Berry Pt 1

1/1/2024
Pastor Mike asked Sheriff Troy Berry the following questions: - Why are there no good, progress stores in the Bryans Road shopping center? We pay lots of taxes out here and deserve BETTER. - Smarter people please! We need educated people to contribute to this not a pastor and a police officer. NEWLIFE Church is all about helping you know God, find freedom, discover purpose, and make an impact. The resources we put out are intended to accomplish one or more of those in your life. If you've found it helpful to you, please let us know by sending us a message or email. Also, if you'd like to keep up with the latest content, please subscribe to our YouTube channel and like our Facebook Page. - Mr. Hilson Why are you and members of your church actively, publicly supporting Donald Trump in spite of his racist rhetoric, a cabinet member that is aligned with known skinheads and other racist groups? - Why do you think this particular incident has galvanized people of all races, domestically and in foreign countries, to stand up and protest? -Would you hire an officer if there were things in his background that showed him to be racist with people of color? I don't believe all cops are bad and the ones I have dealt with were nice. The good cops need to tear down this blue wall and learn to report their coworkers when they observe them doing wrong. Not saying that's what your group does. - Is there some kind of background check or some in depth check that goes into these officers regarding racism? How can you be certain that the officers that are in these streets are not racist, a part of any racial or supremacy groups, or associated with before taking the oath to protect and serve ALL citizens in the county? - Racism is not new...it's just captured on camera now..before hiring an officer how to you screen them to ensure they are not bringing their own agenda of a race war into your department? Do you have some that can review an officer's arresting cases and say hey, why are all your arrest suspects African American? Who monitors this issue since we all know police brutality against African Americans exists? Why does it take videos of innocence for this issue to be addressed?

Let's Talk: Interview with Sheriff Berry Pt 2

1/1/2024
Pastor Mike asked Sheriff Troy Berry the following questions: - What type of training are you providing to your officers to better assist them with dealing with the public, especially people of color? - When these incidents occur, what practices are put in place within the police force to ensure officers receive recurrent training to prevent it? - When was the last race relations training? - What sped training do our officers have when they go out on calls? - What is the training say about whistleblowers, do cops feel comfortable reporting other cops for excessive force? - Do officers have to take part in de-escalation training? - Can training take place to help citizens understand exactly what should be done when engaged by an officer? This should include role playing. - To Troy Berry: What accountability system and/or training is in place so black people are not treated by the police like what happened in Minnesota? - Are potential police candidates and current police officers screened to implicit bias? What is the best way to peacefully protest while not allowing the seriousness of this matter to be diminished? People are DYING and we need a solution. - Are body cameras currently being utilized by the Charles County Sheriff Department? If so, what is the policy regarding initiating (i.e. once call received)? If not, why not? If not, when? - Do officers wear body cameras? If so, are they required to be turned on immediately when officers respond to a police call? - Has there been discussions/training within the department regarding racial injustice and how they can do their part in ensuring proper handling of all situations? - Are there training given to officers to prevent murders from happening like what resulted from George Floyd? -With such a high percentage of white sheriff officers in an increasingly growing African American community, what measures or coaching is your organization undergoing to prevent racial profiling, abuse to economically challenged youth and the risk of taking lives? - If you could design the training requirements for officers what would it look like? Would there be continued training? Should officers need longer training to acclimate to the mental difficulty of maintaining empathy? - How are the police trained so that they have no bias and can defuse any tension? I feel that not all officers are unbiased and some display hostility in the dmv. I speak from observation and from 1 experience with a friend.

Let's Talk: Interview with Sheriff Berry Pt 3

1/1/2024
Pastor Mike asked Sheriff Troy Berry the following questions: - In Minnesota the officers had several past bad behaviors and were never removed from the force. Have you as the Sheriff task the department to look over personnel files of your officers to ensure you relieve the bad officers? - How are you dealing with the possibility that some, not all, of the of the officers serving as policemen may have racist beliefs? Are complaints against them taken into consideration during evaluation time? - In our neighborhood community this past weekend, 6-8 young black teens had been walking around the neighborhood. I am a white female and had seen them throughout the entire day, leaving the same house on our street, just hanging out together, walking around the circle and ponds, then returning. No problems and I had no concerns - just teens going for walks, hanging out after EOY school. Later in the afternoon, our neighborhood app alerted that they had been stopped by two community police cars because they "looked out of place." When did we go from stopping people just for walking around and not after an illegal action? Walking is not suspicious activity. Even if they were visiting a friend from other areas or neighborhoods, that's a good thing - not illegal. I understand groups of teens around here tend to get into fights/mob when the group gets larger but how about stopping when something occurs - not stopping peaceful groups of friends from walking about? - What are the statistics on cop violence in our area...are there any excessive force vases being brought up on cops right now...where do we get this information? - What are the consequences for excessive for here? - Is there a community accountability committee or review board in our county, a body that reviews excessive force cases or reviewed arrest and monitors body cameras to continuously update officers on their practices?

Let's Talk: Interview with Sheriff Berry Pt 4

1/1/2024
Pastor Mike asked Sheriff Troy Berry the following questions: - How are complaints about excessive force handled? - How would you handle a protest in Charles county? - What measures are in place to maintain open communication between officers and citizens when engaged? - Are there plans to have a dialogue with young black men (alone) to discuss race relations, profilings, and fear? - What plans are being put in place to re-establish the image of officers starting at the elementary age? - What doesn't the CCSO give all the "Violent Crime" incidents that occur in our County, to the MD Independent to post in the Police Briefs section of the paper, are there too many? - A young Charles County female posted recently that she saw a young black female stopped on 210 with 4 police cars. She was fearful for the young woman and wanted to know if she could legally stop as a witness just to let the other woman know that someone had her back. This has 2 parts...first, the answer to the young lady's question above and (2) this indicates strongly that residents now feel that even CC police are their enemy & targeting young blacks. What is your community "action" plan, not just talk, for easing their fears? - I would like to know how the sheriff department interacts with our young people in the community to help build a positive relationship between the 2 groups. If there's anything positive about the coronavirus it's that we are all in this together. - I have repeatedly heard that minorities are stopped by the La Plata police without cause. I have never experienced this but I am wondering how this is allowed. I have friends who refuse to visit me for this reason. - We've seen Ahmaud Arbury's killers run free for 70+ days and George Floyd's killers free for 3 days after his death, the common denominator here, as many others around the country, is that arrests weren't made after law enforcement got ahold of video proof, but after the public got ahold of video proof and cried out for their arrest. What will you do as Sheriff to hold your deputies accountable to their actions and take action because it is what's right instead of because the public wants it?

Let's Talk: Interview with Sheriff Berry Pt 5

1/1/2024
Pastor Mike asked Sheriff Troy Berry the following questions: - Mr. Berry Why have you not taken a public stance against the profiling and murdered of black men and women? What are you doing about your own officers with numerous complaints? - Being an officer is a stressful job. Have you and your leaders considered or would consider doing psychological testing and counseling to evaluate their mental health? I work with behavioral scientists and mental health instructors and I believe for an officer to kill an unarmed black man is rooted in learned hatred but also mental instability. - When an officer pulls a black person/male over, is there a different protocol? I'm asking because there are a lot of cases, hundreds if not thousands of cases where traffic stops resulted in killing and usually unarmed. - How do we stop racism? - What is white fragility? - Let's just put it out there - people are crazy! Like many mayors in hot zones are saying, the people involved in violent protests are not protesting for solutions - they're seeking revenge. What can you offer as a respectable black sheriff to stem the tide of revenge and change the mentality of the black community to partner towards written legal change and solutions? Are there think tanks out there that they can join to help the write up bill solutions to their representatives, community partnering with CCSO, etc? - Lord willing, I will never find myself in a situation like the individual who recorded the death of Mr. Floyd on their cell phone as he was being murdered. However, if I do someday find myself the witness of an officer using excessive force or behaving in a way that seems out of line, what should I do? Is it safe and lawful for me to try to intervene? To verbally try to deescalate the situation? To physically step in, seeking to protect the citizen being abused? Should I call 911 and will that make a difference? Or is my only safe recourse to pull out my camera to record, so that at least I'll have evidence if this incident of abuse results in yet another life lost? - Not saying it's true but does race play a big role in how we're treated? Being afraid of getting pulled over...if I fear my life is in jeopardy can I as a black woman continue riding until I find a safe place to pull over? - Why do we as black people feel we have to take extra precaution to extreme measures when being pulled over? We know that it's a chance we may not make it out alive just from that one traffic stop, especially seeing the vast differences in situations how a white person is handled vs a black person. We are dealt much more aggression and force than our white or other race counterparts. - For the sheriff: As a polished and experienced leader, you perspective is different than the police we need to speak with. When will there be an opportunity to speak with the daily grind officers? The ones that are often the true face of the police department because they are the ones the public generally interacts with? For true progress, this needs to be a nonpolitical process and get into the grit conversation. That happens between the real parties who frequently have friction. When will events for those types of conversations take place? - Sheriff Berry, Would you be open to holding transparent monthly community meetings for the service districts? This would include the commanders, shift supervisors and deputies. This is COPE where we can integrate with the deputies and supervisors who patrol our neighborhood. We could talk about the Neighbors App, Ring cameras, concerns etc. on a monthly basis. Would you be open to engaging transfers, new hires and staff with the community as well? Share a fSheriff message monthly as your open - There needs to be an organization under the DOJ branch that investigates all police-related deaths, external from Internal Affairs or police organizations, to hold police accountable. The current investigative agencies are too close to the police...
