Two things here: · Strong leaders followed Nehemiah because of his heart, passion, and purpose. · Nehemiah had the confidence to recruit leaders better than him. “Insecure leaders” is an oxymoron (See 2 Chron. 24:4, 13). The second thing we learn about Nehemiah’s leadership in this chapter is that he was a master at delegation. He got the right people around him and strategically organized them. · He made sure there was a sense of community (See Neh. 3:1-2, 4. The phrase “next to them” is used 12 times in the first 10 verses of Neh. 3. · He had people rebuild the areas that were important to them. For example, the priests rebuilt the Sheep Gate (Neh. 3:1). Nehemiah’s game plan to set a God-given vision for your (insert area): 1) Prayerfully set a clear vision goal from God’s Word. Nehemiah 2:12,18, Proverbs 29:18 2) Intentionally lay out practical steps toward your goal. Nehemiah 2:12-16 3) Confidently communicate the vision to those impacted. Godly leaders are persistent in prayer. Nehemiah 1:4 Godly leaders exude humility and reverence towards God. Nehemiah 1:5-6 Godly leaders are we-focused, not me-focused. Nehemiah 1:6-7, 11 Godly leaders in trials cling to the promises of God’s Word. Nehemiah 1:8-10 Godly leaders don’t just propose solutions, they own them. Nehemiah 1:11 Godly leaders model Jesus. Representative Substitution: Jesus represented us (the guilty), took our place, and experienced the judgment of God—instead of us. Imputation: God imputed (credited) our sin on Jesus. God imputed (credited) Jesus’ righteousness to us. Israel was longing for a military leader who could free them from life in Rome. God’s Messiah was a suffering servant who freed us from sin for eternity. Israel wanted a military and political leader God sent a Savior to defeat sin and death once and for all. Now, of course, Jesus didn’t remain in the grave. He rose from the dead. We celebrate that every day. And we’ll celebrate that together next week. Followers of Jesus changed the world. Ezra was God’s man for the job. Ezra 7:10 explains Ezra’s passion. Ezra set his heart… Ezra “set his heart” to follow hard after God. The Hebrew word translated “set” הֵכִ֣ין means to be to be firm and steadfast—to be committed to do something. It describes a whole-hearted devotion. Ezra was determined that he would not be distracted or discouraged. He arranged his life to keep this commitment. Ezra followed the greatest commandment that Jesus taught about. He loved “the Lord his God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength” (Mark 12:29-30). Ezra set his heart to study God’s Word Study means to search out, to read repeatedly, to discuss. The Arabic version of the word means to “beat a path.” A path was made through a field due to the constant traffic. Studying means that we are beating a path by constant traffic in God’s Word. Ezra set his heart to do God’s Word God’s Word must be put into practice. James says that studying God’s Word and not doing it is like seeing your face in a mirror and then forgetting what you look like (James 1:22-24). We must be those who know God’s Word and do it. Ezra set his heart to teach God’s Word to others. Teaching the Bible begins in the home. Parents are the primary teachers of their children.
